These videos are amazing and the comments below inspirational. Wanted to get my CDL on my own versus having a mega carrier train me, even though I'll probably go there for actual trucking training. I've been out of training for 6 years now and I've always been an avid "bottom of the steering wheel backer." When your first video caught my eye and you said that trying to guide the back of the trailer was the wrong approach I thought this guy is kind of full of 'it'. Well, I watched through all 3 of your backing videos and I am impressed. I can now see how guiding the front of the trailer like a wheelbarrow and focusing on the Kingpin and tandems is a much better approach. Kudos for teaching an old dog a new trick.

For example, if I see the front of my trailer needs to over to the right, I turn my steering wheel to the right. I good place to learn this is go to rest areas. Your trailer will usually go in off center and you'll pull ahead a little bit and see what direction the front of your trailer needs to go for the trailer to to straight on that line. Do it a few times. Nobody will be rushing you like a truck stop or a shipper. It takes time. 7 months in I finally feel like I got it. Good luck !!! It can be very frustrating. I know

  • @Fetidaf
    @Fetidaf Před 2 lety +12

    I’m not sure if this goes completely against what you’re teaching or not but I’ve never once thought about “opposite thinking” but I also back from the back and sides of the trailer.
    My instructor taught me to always steer towards the problem, keeping in mind that it will take a while for the back of it to catch up because of the pivot point.
    So if I notice the back of my trailer is coming towards an obstacle on my drivers side a bit too quickly then I would steer towards the driver side to slow down the movement of the back. If I notice my trailer is “drifting” to the passenger’s side while I’m pretty well straightened out then I’ll steer a bit towards the passenger side to get it straightened out.
    I drove for about 3 years between 2017 and 2020 but I haven’t driven since. My new boss in an unrelated field got a semi so we don’t need to rely on carriers for our deliveries and since I have experience; guess who’s driving it? Lol.
    Well I’m trying to get my CDL back and I’m still a decent backer but one of our docks is off a narrow street and there are very expensive obstacles in the next dock over (a camper and a boat) and they’re connected and I always have trouble with keeping it on the pavement and I end up just saying “screw it” and get the trailer lined up and then getting my cab straightened up which means I drive over the curb and into the grass and then straight line back and I hate doing that. I’m gonna put some of your methods to the test next time I back in there… I especially like the glove on the ground idea and I’m going to try out the offset rule and not steer too close to the outside curb which would necessitate my driving on the grass, I just thought I’d share what I was taught since that got my into some pretty tight spots a few years back but also thank you for sharing some new methods.

      The Dang truck didn't start had to reschedule. Then when I went back I blew it on Air Brakes. But see the funny thing is..... I passed the ENTIRE pre-trip and failed skills on my first run. So I was told I have to do airbrakes but it's not a pass or fail just gotta do it to drive the truck. But today I messed up on the Applied Brake portion and was told I made an error so we have to postpone and reschedule. And that it doesn't count against me, I still got 2 tries.

      But that offset method help me pass straight back with speed and confidence. I messed up on alley dock. And get this? I'm a yard goat! Crazy right SMH

    I'm currently working on my CDL, and watching videos like these between classes to improve in backing. I want to be confident and comfortable by the time I take the test. This video is quite helpful.

      I have been out of it from 2006. Drove for 33 years. Never got calm, comfortable or confident during a "test". We had supervisors (baby sitters) who would ride with us from time to time. For me it was always stressful. I hate those "test" they put you all through now. I think they put too much on you that should be left to OJT. If a state makes you test at their building they should have to provide the equipment. I drove for a great company and had super wonderful training, save for backing. I looked forward to that as I sure needed it. My trainer told me, I cannot teach you to back. You must learn that on your own. Shocked! After those 33 years, I almost had it. Good luck.🦇

    @ATB , UK still teaches "watch the back of the trailer and the tractor front tires" techniques. While doing this I instinctively felt the instructions were somehow wrong but only now watching your videos I can understand your teachings are correct (even though we drive on different sides of the cab!
