  • About 60% of Russian population identifies with Orthodox Christianity. Most of them, however, see it as a part of their national and cultural background. What are the reasons that bring even these casual believers to church?

We r not saved just by faith and good works, but by constance repentance, obedience to Christ, love and mercy for our brothers, in taking part in the sacraments and liturgies of the one and only church (Orthodoxy) and thanks to the act of God, the mercy and love of the trinitarian God.

Notwithstanding nominal belief, do the casual Orthodox in Russia still observe the fast for Great Lent as a cultural culinary matter? I'm going to assume the other fasts are ignored.

Many actually do. However, they also may have a peculiar understanding of fasting. More often than not the "fasting food" (постная еда) is low or no fat. This way you have a fasting oil (a sunflower seed oil) and even a fasting beef (low fat beef).
Again, depends on the individual. Most don't fast at all.
