Is the CRF50 right for a 5-year old?

- Is 5-years old too young to handle a Honda CRF50? Too heavy? Can they shift? Use the rear brake? Hold the bike up? Kickstart it? We try and answer some common questions that I had when I put Rennen on this new-to-him bike.
I come across some pretty good deals, and this 2004 Honda CRF50 was one of them. I picked this up for $400 and it just needed a carb rebuild and new fuel petcock from sitting for about 10-years with old fuel in the tank. A Honda 50 is ALWAYS a good bike to have around, cause they can carry and adult as well as they can a kid. My big-boy XR50 is still a go to bike in my fleet for new riders or for just plain fun.
My question was though, how old should a kid be before they try and ride a Honda 50? They're a bit taller and heavier than the PW50, and also have 3 gears with a semi-automatic clutch to shift between those gears. It also has a proper rear foot brake pedal rather than the PW50's rear brake being actuated by the left hand. I also like that the Honda is a 4-stroke and with it comes more torque for play riding, it's maintenance free, and well, it's a Honda! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
this is a very eye opening video.. I think parents are so caught up in their kid actually "riding" vs can they flat foot? can the pick it up? can they shift? and can they even start it? and when the answers are no, then the CRF50 is probably too much bike for their kid.
Thanks for the great comment and feedback, I appreciate that!
Will they grow? Will they gain strength? Can they learn to shift? Can they learn to start it?
Idk about you but I couldn’t do any of this before I learned 😉
This is the bike I wanna buy for my 5 yr old son. But my kid is alittle smaller than most. Thx for this vid!
Most informative video ever! Thanks man!
looks like he was having fun thanks for the video
He was!! The backyard sessions are always pure fun, no pressure 😛
Good video. I picked up an XR50 for my daughter for her 3rd birthday... she jumped on and started riding right away, without issue (1st gear and training wheels). She’s 4 now, and hoping to get the trainers off by the end of this year.... hopefully riding as good as your boy by 5, but not so sure yet... she gets easily distracted.
My grandson is 5 will be 6 in May and we have got him the Honda 50 for Christmas...we will see🤘🤘
Great job keep on riding 👊🏻
Always 🤜🤛
Yes, perfect bike! Love the vids!
Thanks! I love the Honda 50’s, they’re so solid
My son started riding the crf50 when he was 4. I put it in 2nd and let him go after he learned the brakes, how to shift it down to neutral, how to use the kill switch an how to put the kickstand down. Hes about to be six now and has learned the shifter and can pick it up if it falls over but he still cant start it. I feel Honda needs to add electric start. Especially for the age that its aimed at
Wow this was awesome he was enjoying it I subbed I getting those one day
Awesome kid looks happy as heck…I love it💪
my son just turned 4 and we got him a 50cc dirtbike. kid loves it!
Awesome!!
My kid is 4, wouldn’t say he’s small but wouldn’t say he’s a massive 4 year old either. He can sit flat footed on a crf50, he can change up and down gears with ease, can kick start it no problem, use the brakes and ride it no problem 🤷🏻♂️
Though I would say the PW is the better bike for 4-6 year olds regardless of height. Just my opinion. Oh and good video your kid is a good rider for 5!
Did your boy have to start with training wheels or was he good to go?
Good one
My sister learned on a little Z50. And she was only three years old
I tell you about when they’re that young they listen to you. She learned she could not take it out of first gear. Until she got good at riding
That’s awesome! I also have a 77’ Z50 that Rennen has now asked to ride, maybe I’ll let him soon a few laps on it
My son is 6, we've got a CRF50, a pw50 and a little Chinese mini quad. Just got him on the quad so far, probably going to try the pw soon with screw in the throttle. Crf is mine 😂
Good plan, the PW50 will be easier to learn on than the CRF. The weight of the CRF will make learning to ride tougher than on the PW50
@@John5XR yea I agree, the pw is definitely a little less intimidating- still a fast little bike though. I've got it opened up and tuned now and the powerband is kind of nasty even with me on it and I'm 5'10" 180
@ 6:51 your son summed up in three words what it took a paragraph for you to sum up without realizing it
sharp kid :)
and I understood his diatribe before that in regards to being his "bigger bike" until he's ready for a Cobra, my guess is the PW50 was his first bike....you get attached
It's the perfect bike. Depends on the 5 year old I guess. My boy turned 5 in May. He starts it, shifts it and rides it like it should be. Definitely wouldn't goto a bike with no shifter or a shitty brand cuz you'll be upgrading in a year or so. Honda 50 is hands down the best dirt bike for a kid, after the 50 it's self preference and what feels best
Agreed, except for racing, where the CRF50 is not meant to be. To me, the CRF is the perfect trail bike, but for the track and trails, the Husqvarna EE5 wins hands down
Is there anything you can do to the kick starter to make it easier for him to start it? Also where do you get Honda service manuals?
not really, but he's really not tall enough to start it anyways. When it's on the stand, he can kick it over though, so it's not the effort more than it's he's not tall enough. Also since this was filmed, he can pick the bike up on his own now, so that's always good! Service manuals can be found pretty easily online anymore, but a real paper copy can always be bought through Helms:

it is a good bike
Trying to convince my parents to get my little brother who’s 5 a dirt bike so I can teach him and ride with him
Just tell them it would be great memories
Thanks for this.. basically it is poorly designed for the ride height it is meant for. It is so hard to find something an early 5 year old can ride that is a step up from the Razor electric bikes with suspension. There is a MX track local to me with a kids loop and my son is dying to ride it but his electric Razor cant make it up the dirt piles.
If you have the budget for it, the KTM/Husqvarna/GasGas electric bikes are amazing for kids this age and are superior on the track
It has an adjustable shock.
Honda Red has always been my favorite. Before long you will be buying him a CRF150.
I’m looking forward to that day! I know I have a stint of temperamental 2-strokes for a few years at least though
My five year old can’t do any of those things either. He just leaves it in second gear and goes .I wish he could it gets tiring for me 😂
My boy is 7 now and rips through the gears like he’s racing motoGP. He’ll be there in no time!
Rising Star!
He likes hamming it up for the camera when he knows I'm shooting slo-mo! lol
Which one do you think is more dependable
The CRF50 and PW50 are both extremely dependable, but the edge would go to the CRF as its 4-stroke and can basically be run until there’s no piston rings left, whereas the PW50 will lose power as the rings wear and it’ll need a top end refresh, which is very easy and affordable though
Great video! I’ll go check his channel!
I couldn’t find his channel... Is it Ren Racer?
Rennracer
I’m gearing that channel up for kids content, the funny stuff like the mic’d up’s and wilder things will be on my channel
John5XR Cool!
Would this be good for a 12 year old beginner
The CRF50 is a great bike for just about anyone. The engine is strong enough to pull around an adult sized person. The issue you might run into is the height of your 12-year old. If they’re tall, the handlebars might interfere with their legs when turning. In my opinion, the CRF110 or KLX110 would be a more appropriate sized bike for that age
Ya if he is to tall push the handle bars up
So does he just run it in first gear?
2nd or 3rd
Do you guys live in the USA
Yes, Florida
John5XR nice I’m want to get a dirt mike crf50 hopefully we can ride some time 😁
@@Noturpie dude ur so little
꧁༺Chamomile Tea༻꧂ I don’t understand
We might trade our Honda rc 500 for two bikes kinda like this
Can’t go wrong with a Honda 50, they’re bulletproof
Honda125cc its good for 13 year ?
I think so, my first clutch bike was a crf125 when I was 11 very good Bike for learning to ride or learning clutch. They are also not slow for a 125 four stroke
To all these overprotective parents, travis pastrano rode at 4 years old now hes a millionaire living his dreams. Its about risk and reward. Kids are fearless. Motocross is dangerous. Some kids are riders some arent.
Why Are You Asking me of corse the Honda CRF50F is great for a 5-Year-Old
Im a 10 hear old kid and my parents probably might not even let me have that.
I’m about to make a video today go to Transformers kids then DIRT BIKE when you see that kid that’s me
how tall is he?
Man I can’t remember as this was shot around two years ago, sorry!
@@John5XR ah it’s okay, I want to buy one for my brother and he’s coming up on 4ft but I don’t want it to be too short for him
My 2-3 year old cusin rode and I was 👁👄👁
Lol that kid with a big wheel in the background
That’s little bro! He can’t reach the pedals 😂
@@John5XR Yeah he's like 3
Two in this video, but 3 now 😉
5 to 6 years old ...good for a crf 50....
Trying a little hard to sell the peewee
The PW50 is an amazing bike for a 3-6 year old and is also the bike that all motocross races start the kids on, so there’s no need to sell it as most kids who start riding that early will be on it anyways. The Honda is the ultimate “all around” bike, as kids 5+ through full size adults can have fun on this bike. It’s not as popular in the racing scene however because the kids don’t know how to shift it to maximize the bikes powerband
Definitely leading his son during the comparison questions. Let the little man have his own opinions.
If he can’t start it or put the stand up or shift it just got a electric dirtbike
Or just make him wait until he’s 7 or 8 to ride, right?
I’m 14 and use it as a pit bike lol
How tall cause i want to get one but I don’t know if I’ll fit
I’d say 4’ tall or more to comfortably ride the CRF50
@@oscar__1689 nah dose not matter one bit
@@oscar__1689 how tal if ur pitbiking
I'm 35 and wheelie my CRF50 everywhere! Not many upgrades aside from tall seat and suspension either. They're little beasts if you tune them up right!
