Personally, I disagree with the Minister of Exteriors here -- I'd much rather hang wet coats in the mudroom or closet and keep the hallway pretty! Totally loving these videos, by the way. I get so excited to come along for your design day!
I have to agree about painting the lower level out to white. So much brighter and less oppressive. I love the master suite painted out white too and love that you're leaving the main area with the wood. I see both cubes and stars/snowflakes. : ))
Sarah is totally right. (No shock there.). Paint those boards!!!! Also, re cubes vs. snowflakes, I see snowflakes with the New Direction. Finally, pine vs. paint, PAINT.
Tiles straight up, I see cubes....sideways SNOWFLAKES ! LOL!!! Paint ...Paint...Paint ! And oh my goodness.... that first bathroom with that tile on the floor .... AWESOME !!! Love seeing this all come together! But I had no doubts it would be sensational .... I mean after all ...... ❤️
I agree with you Sarah that the pine on the lower level needs to be painted. It creates a choppy space the way that it is right now. Regarding the area with the radiator, I think that it has to have a wow factor. Even though warm coats is a great idea, it should not be the first thing that you see, in my opinion. The tiles in the bathroom looked like cubes until he turned them on their side, which looked better to me. The project is turning out great!
I see cubes and snowflakes both ways, but agree that the flakes are easier to see after the tiles are rotated. Love the paint instead of pine. I see the appeal of warm coats, but I think they will make the hall look messy and they will scuff up the paint and drip water onto the rad.
I have to agree with you Sarah and paint it white (or the light gray) downstairs (and also upstairs too). It gives it a crisp look! I agree with Sarah in making the entrance look pretty and the other room will be cozy warm if the door is closed, which will dry the coats..... or toss them into the dryer that is a few feet away.
1) Agreed: on lower level, paint out beams (ceiling height too low) and it will leave the impact for the upper floors with the higher ceilings for a statement; 2) Disagree: Entry/Closet/Mudroom/hallway: do not add additional coat storage above heater (there is adequate storage/utility already and you don't want water dripping on the heater) use this through-fare to create something of visual impact- it's a hallway with doors so keep people moving through. 3) Love the Tim Horton's shout out for sponsorship! Sarah Richardson's brand is a Candian Icon of equal status!! Cheers!
Painting the lower entrance hallway would be my preference as well. I agree with you Sarah, that the lower orange wood ceiling, yellow wood tones in trim, and the (3rd) wood colour on the new doors make for a hodgepodge look, and that painting would pull it all together. As for upstairs, I’m not certain I’d paint the ceiling. It’s a chalet and not a city home and as such, I think the ceilings left as they are could work really well to warm up the chalet. Painted walls the right, lighter colour however, would tone down orange hues in current ceiling (or that could just be the lighting I’m seeing in the video). Anyhow, that’s just my take. Looking forward to seeing the changes as they’re revealed! Love these videos!! 😍🙌👏👌 (P.S. Tell M.o.E. he’s doing an outstanding job filming these episodes! 🎥👏🙌). Have a great weekend! 🎄
Yes, painted out is better. Bath tile: your carpenter’s suggestion to flip the tiles makes sense- somehow it emphasizes the vertical, not a bad idea for a low-ceilinged bathroom. Vanity is brilliant (“actually”)!
Actually I like the warm coat idea, you always need multiple coats in Winter, especially if you are busy with outdoor activities. The mudroom may fill up quickly. I love the painted timber, all that orange wood has to go. The pale grey is very elegant. The circular tiles are perfect.
I like Chris's decision for how to lay the bathroom wall tile. Bedroom ceiling looks much better painted white. Love the octagon floor tiles in the bathroom.
Loved that Alex was your cameraman. You two are so great together. Love it painted. I don't care for orange, which sadly, is what my kitchen is. I need you, Sarah! :) I see both but agree it is nicer with diamonds on point.
voting snowflakes and paint Love the idea of mirror and hooks on the sides in the hall. Bravo Sarah, Cameraman and crew! Super job all around can't wait to see the reveal!
I'm SO happy you painted that ugly orange wood and beams! The white is FABULOUS! I would have only loved it if the beams were actually in a brown tone, then I would have left just the beams unpainted.
This chalet is looking so good! Votes: (1 - Tile) - I like the 'sideways' or second direction better. Yes, you still see cubes, but it's less obvious. (2 - Paint or No Paint) - Definitely paint. Painting a house always reminds me of those old Bob Ross videos and how he said "there are no mistakes, only happy accidents." :) Not that painting the beams white was an accident, but I just don't think you can ever go wrong with white. Even if you don't like it initially, you can always add elements to make the room what you want against a white slate.
Totally agree with Kris on kubes one way, snowflakes the other. And in the master I love the painted ceiling...but on the ground level I'd keep the pine beams and just paint the space between, similar to what's been done in the other lower areas. Compromise, so Canadian!
I'll buck the trend, probably too many British restoration shows, but, I'd keep just a couple beams natural, and paint the rest out. Would add more of that Scandi vibe. And I can see both snowflakes and cubes.
Coats tend to be bulkier where it’s colder, and living in snow country myself, I can tell you they will be the first thing you see when entering that narrow hallway
I love the chalet type of architecture and I would highlight the beams by leaving them natural and unpainted. Simply White on the flat parts of the ceiling. Too much white takes away too much from the lovely architecture. If you paint them all white then maybe add a wrought iron detail at the apex of each beam? On the long entry wall I would go with a row of thin/proportional tobacco baskets which would hide hooks sticking out from the middle of each basket. That way they are pretty and functional to temporarily hang light jackets/dog leashes. Love the tile either way and that floor tile design is amazing! Thanks so much for your content.
Thank's for the comment Susan! I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! There's a lot more great content on the way but I wouldn't hold out for the ottoman!
I saw cubes first and snowflakes when the tiles were turned. Love the painted ceiling, looks so much brighter. I love your videos and I always look forward for the next one.
☕️ Hi Sarah, I love the painted ceiling. Paint is my vote. 📝 The tiles in the bathroom question 🤔 ??? I initially saw snowflakes ❄️ or stars 🌟 until cubes were pointed out......go figure. 😂 The chalet is looking awesome and I will continue to follow this interior transformation. Thanks again...🙋🏼 🇨🇦
❤️❤️❤️100% agree with Chris on the tile having to be turned to the side. I couldn't for the life of me see snowflakes the other way only saw cubes!❤️❤️❤️
I didn't see the snowflake until Kris turned the tiles. I was a little worried about the peninsula in the kitchen, but it doesn't seem like it'll block much traffic (if any). It reminds me of that very sweet kitchen you did for the Newfie couple where the wife was a baker? Tiny space, but soooooo functional. I'm still mostly an anti-painted wood girl, but I see what you mean about painting the ceilings in the lower level, and keeping the natural wood in the upper level. It almost makes it seem cathedral-like.
Why not build in a console over the rad and use decorative rad cover of pierced metal for the top? A few delicate (in appearance) metal cross-bars (like metal mullions) in the console table frame, would make it sturdy enough, and it would be cheap to do. You would still get all the heat for Andrew's idea, yet have landing pad for keys, glasses and decorative bling. Just a thought. Love your designs!
I love the function of hanging the coats above the rad. Is the entry floor there also heated? Love how it dries up the mess. The white paint looks amazing, so much brighter & you can actually appreciate it now. Agree with painting the wood on the main fllor as well. The orange shades need to go. I see the "t.v." cut out in the shower was filled in. 😆 Amazing, looking forward to seeing it complete. Enjoy ski season.
Hello from California! I miss your shows on HGTV in the States, so glad i found you on You Tube...I agree, paint looks better...and I saw cubes until he turned it, then I saw stars/snowflakes :) Fantastic design as always, can't wait to see it all done. Happy Holidays to you and all, and hi to Tommy!
I would paint the first floor. I love painted wood, but the upstairs I would have painted the ceiling and left the wood raw. I didn’t like the original stain color, so I would have stripped the beams. The tile is beautiful. I too saw stars when the tile was repositioned. I think some black iron accents would be beautiful. Love your show!
Paint. Turn the tiles sideways. Always fun to look for different designs, sometimes cubes, sometimes stars, sometimes snowflakes. Who knows what else people will see!
First position I saw cube. I like the other postion you gave a go on... I saw star. At first I did not think I would like the entire ceiling painted, but now I'm for painted.
great video thank you! So, paint all timber that has even the remote-est tinge of yellow or orange. It's so 90's. I had timber throughout my house everywhere in the 90's as it was the fashion. Definitely not so now. The tiles look better the way Chris wants to have them. Easier to see snowflakes. Kudos to your 'darling camerman' - he does a great job and I think some hooks above the heater would be great but not the whole wall - look too much like a school cloakroom then. The mirror idea sounds good and maybe something to throw keys etc onto. I love your videos Sarah. Please keep them up for us!! Cheers, DEB T (NZ) P.S. 24 degrees Celsius here in my hometown of Christchurch today!
I have to agree with him, sorry! Turned sideways I see flakes...upright I saw cubes. Definitely painted...so much brighter!
Personally, I disagree with the Minister of Exteriors here -- I'd much rather hang wet coats in the mudroom or closet and keep the hallway pretty! Totally loving these videos, by the way. I get so excited to come along for your design day!
First position I saw cubes second position snowflakes so much better and definitely painted
Painted is so much better. The second try on the tiles shows star flowers to me. A good balance with the square box underneath.
Paint wins over pine! Thank you for ‘turning’ the bathroom tiles from cubes to snowflakes.
I have to agree about painting the lower level out to white. So much brighter and less oppressive. I love the master suite painted out white too and love that you're leaving the main area with the wood. I see both cubes and stars/snowflakes. : ))

With him on the snowflake. Paint!!

The tiles in the bathroom looked like cubes until he turned them on their side, which looked better to me. The project is turning out great!
First position I saw cubes, turned on its side I saw snow flakes.
My Louisiana Home I saw it that way also. So, glad the carpenter rotated it to snow flakes.
Painted for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I see cubes but if threatened I see stars:)
Sarah's favourite words "in stock".
First look I saw cubes then snowflakes when rotated. I vote for snowflakes. Paint is the solution for all the woodwork in this house.
Kris “Actually” Gibson actually makes a good point about the tiles.
I see cubes and snowflakes both ways, but agree that the flakes are easier to see after the tiles are rotated. Love the paint instead of pine. I see the appeal of warm coats, but I think they will make the hall look messy and they will scuff up the paint and drip water onto the rad.

I do like the idea of warm coats, but I agree with you that it will just look cluttered. There’s already other places to store coats.
Actually I like the warm coat idea, you always need multiple coats in Winter, especially if you are busy with outdoor activities. The mudroom may fill up quickly. I love the painted timber, all that orange wood has to go. The pale grey is very elegant. The circular tiles are perfect.
Paint definitely! I saw cubes until he rotated and then snowflakes!
I have always like natural wood, but painted looks much more livable so much brighter!
I like Chris's decision for how to lay the bathroom wall tile. Bedroom ceiling looks much better painted white. Love the octagon floor tiles in the bathroom.
I really love wood...on a tree. Glad you painted it, looks so much brighter :)
I love that you want to keep the pine but......I gotta say I could live quite well with the paint!
ROTATED, to the second position, I saw stars/snowflakes. Not rotated, I saw only busy, yukky cubes.
I seen cubes till he turned it on it’s side. Now I can see stars!
Open area below the vanity, what a great place for dust bunnies to hang out. That chalet is looking wonderful.
I agree with Chris...cubes then snowflakes once it was turned. Love the paint...so much better!!
Defiantly PAINT, PAINT AND MORE PAINT!!!!!!!! I love painted Painted wood. Did I mention i like paint! lol
I'm SO happy you painted that ugly orange wood and beams! The white is FABULOUS! I would have only loved it if the beams were actually in a brown tone, then I would have left just the beams unpainted.

Turn the tile sideways to see flakes instead of cubes. The paint is so much better! Beautiful as always.
Same as the last comment, I saw cubes at first and I love the painted ceiling! It’s ACTUALLY going to be so good😂.
Painted for sure! Tile with triangle turned turned vertical I saw snowflakes, which I prefer.
Great & smart idea of your husband to placed at the entrance the hooks for jackets. Functional too 🙋♂️
Yep, cubes, then Kris turned them and I immediately saw snowflakes :)
Totally agree with Kris on kubes one way, snowflakes the other. And in the master I love the painted ceiling...but on the ground level I'd keep the pine beams and just paint the space between, similar to what's been done in the other lower areas. Compromise, so Canadian!
I see both snowflakes and cubes! Great tile.
I see cubes so I like the rotation to snowflakes ❄️!
First way, cubes; his way...snowflake! Definitely do snowflake way! Paint but leaving only main room ceiling with light limed white.
Most definitely I see cubes, but when turned I do see the stars. Love the painted pine everywhere!
I'll buck the trend, probably too many British restoration shows, but, I'd keep just a couple beams natural, and paint the rest out. Would add more of that Scandi vibe.

I too agree with Chris! I saw cubes, I think it looks much better turned on its side, can definitely see snowflakes and stars then. Gorgeous!
Loved the tiles laid sideways and definitely paint.
Painted! Love it! I see stars and cubes...

Completely agreed with him; cubes first, star-flakes second😄
Paint! Paint and more paint. And, I have to agree with Chris on the tile. You do see more of a snowflake his direction. Everything’s looking great.
Pine vs Paint. Definitely PAINT!
Definitely paint! Looking forward to the finished project
Yup I see snowflakes I'm with Sarah!
This is getting so exciting, it’s going to be a fabulous house! And I’m still holding out hope that the Boot ottoman will magically reappear!
Thank's for the comment Susan! I'm so glad you're enjoying the series! There's a lot more great content on the way but I wouldn't hold out for the ottoman!
Sarah Richardson , awww rats! I promise not to hold it against you, though!
Have to agree with Kris, cubes then snowflakes! Love it painted!
Pine for a ski chalet! At least on the top floor. Downstairs would be fine painted.
After he turned the tile, I didn't just see snowflakes...I saw the Fortress of Solitude. ❄️😂
Paint for sure it looks so much nicer and bigger! And I will have to agree with Kris on the tiles. Sorry... 😛
I saw cubes first and snowflakes when the tiles were turned.
Love the painted ceiling, looks so much brighter.
I love your videos and I always look forward for the next one.
☕️ Hi Sarah,
I love the painted ceiling. Paint is my vote. 📝
The tiles in the bathroom question 🤔 ???

Thanks again...🙋🏼 🇨🇦
❤️❤️❤️100% agree with Chris on the tile having to be turned to the side. I couldn't for the life of me see snowflakes the other way only saw cubes!❤️❤️❤️
I saw cubes. I liked the pine look better. But painted looks great too.
I saw snowflakes at first and the cubes only after Kris pointed them out. And then my brain wouldn't stop switching back and forth.
I didn't see the snowflake until Kris turned the tiles.

Coats in the mud room. Add a floating shelf and mirror in the little hall!
Cubes.
Paint it

Love everything painted out. Orange wood gone. Like the second way for tiles
i am loving this project!!!,..and it needs to be said,...love you're camera man too!!
painted ceiling is looking nicer!
everything is going cool
1st position- cubes / 2nd - ⭐️
I see both cubes AND snowflakes simultaneously! My brain is short-circuiting.🤯
Paint. Turn the tiles sideways. Always fun to look for different designs, sometimes cubes, sometimes stars, sometimes snowflakes. Who knows what else people will see!
Turned I see snowflakes
Upright I see qbert
Painted white is my vote 😊
Rustic floating shelves in hallway. Ceiling white with natural beams
Paint 👍🏼 and I saw all of the above 👍🏼love it ❣️
Prefer the snowflakes (vertical diamonds), and definitely painted!!! SO good.
turn to see stars!!
I like the sideway style better cause I see snowflakes ❄️. I am always reluctant to paint wood but I must say I really like the way it looks painted.
Upright I see cubes. Sideways I see snow flakes.
I love these videos!!!
I'm glad you're loving them Layne! There's a lot more to come!
First position I saw cube. I like the other postion you gave a go on... I saw star. At first I did not think I would like the entire ceiling painted, but now I'm for painted.
So beautiful! What an inviting chalet! Saw Qbert cubes the first way, but when Chris flipped it then I saw the snowflakes. It’ll be fabulous!!! ❄️
Cubes and lokes fabulous.
Kris is right about the tile to my eyes and painted would for sure 🥰
Paint & cubes!
Paint. I would definitely spend more time in the bathroom contemplating the shapes...
You did a beautiful job on the Chalet. It looks so much better.
Cube🤷🏾♀️ and paint!
Paint for sure! Goodbye orange wood.
Painted is so nice!!!
Paint for sure!
