Will Right Wing Ideology Shape The Future Of The Conservative Party?

  • Lord Frost, Boris Johnson's former Brexit minister was schooled on why the Tories lost. The pandering to Farage on issues like immigration sunk the Tories. Guto Harri put the Tory peer back in his box of the direction the Conservatives should take.

      I won't deny that DK is a common affliction amongst many of the ruling class, it's not a fundamental reason. It goes deeper than that. The "small state" and tax cutting fetish is a central tenet of their "philosophy", even if it entails massive government borrowing, which it does. They are driven by a pure ideology as insane as anything dreamt up by a central committee of Bolsheviks. Combined with the deep anti Europeanism of people like Frost, it was a recipe for disaster.

      Having "unelectetd" Cabinet Officers isn't unusual. Starmer has already made three such appointments on his first day.
      The difference is WHO they are and WHY they are being elevated to the House of Lords. Frost was a Hard Brexit Supporter, so he was elevated, Zac Goldsmith was a friend of Boris, so he got a Peerage, and Cameron had won an election before based on policy rather than personality, which none of the Tory leadership knew a damned thing about, so he got brought back in.
      None were what you what call "Experts" in the field, but were there to provide the leader with unwavering support.
      Starmer has made three appointments of experts with no interest in climbing the political ladder, who will tell the Government to get stuffed if the Government ask them to toe the party line.
      The new Attorney General has already told the government that, legally, they should allow Councils to boycott Israel... imagine Suella Braverman doing THAT to Boris!

    If the right wing were what people wanted why do we have labour in office? Most people understand if you want an NHS, a good security system and all the rest of it. If costs money. The tried and tested way of doing this is via tax. Only the affluent classes dont want to pay for anything. Those with more modest incomes get it. You cant run a country with no money. Thats what tax is for. Many people whilst not jumping for joy at the cost would rather pay more tax and have a NHS that is fit for purpose and able to care for people when they need it. Tax cuts are not a priority for most people. People want services that can an fo the job. Not services on their knees with no money. The policies promoted by successive Prime Ministers reflected the takeover of the Tory party by the far right. To such an extent that you make a case that recent Tory administrations were more right wing that Thatchers governments.

  • @peterl5804
    @peterl5804 Před 26 dny +1

    The Labour Party did not increase its share of the vote, but the conservative vote collapsed. Conservative voters did not go to the Labour party, but they went straight to Reform. The entire last 14 years of conservative rule obviously persuaded almost half of Conservative voters that the solution is fascism. And that’s what they voted for. So what Johnson and Truss achieved was to split the Tory party into those who are centre right Conservative and those who have become seriously right wing.

    The caveat that Farage and his party added makes his issue immigration moot. Making the exception on immigration of healthcare workers which is a large amount of visas issued tells us he never had the intention of having a net zero immigration policy but instead the whole ‘stop the boats’ rhetoric just becomes more racist in tone.

    The political fringes always seem a larger percentage than they are due to how noisy they are. They are always yelling and claiming to be the 'silent majority' but even those who support them only do so for a couple of policies. They also always seem to get media attention which also enhances their perceived popularity. It's not a part of the political spectrum that has much popularity long term while mainstream parties are doing their jobs.
