    I really like the implications of nightmare luffy. It subtly tells the audience that luffy had to be at least 100x stronger then he already was to beat Moria. Even with all of that, he didn't even directly beat him since Moria was sowly crushed by a falling building, which is great forshadowing that Luffy had no chance in the new world with his current strenght (and that Moria caused his own downfall)

    • @just_a_folk95
      @just_a_folk95 Před 5 dny +1

      I think the shadows don't boost your power that much, it's just an increase per shadow and you get the bonus abilities of the user (swordsmanship, sniping etc). He probably got pretty decent shadows and base Luffy is really strong, but I don't think he was 100x stronger.
      I agree on your point overall, I hate when people underrate Moria so much. Though he didn't do really well in Marineford, Oda could've been more merciful with my guy 😭

    Thriller Bark is deeper than anyone truly knows. The setup is very interesting. The act that lands the crew in Thriller Bark was the taking of an offering to God. Now, of course it was a trap. But I believe this act represents Luffy's first slip up as the Sun God. An offering represents a prayer. And defiling one is like defiling a dream. This malintenet led the crew to a karmic trial, where they had to win back their ability to walk under the sun.
    And the one who was tested most, was the one with the most checkered past. A former head hunter. Pirate Hunter Zoro. And he was tested by a priest of the Sun God. Before Enies Lobby, Zoro's past seemed excusable. A lot of pirates are evil afterall. But Enies Lobby showed us how illegitimate a bounty can be. So it raises the question of how many pirates Zoro killed that really didn't deserve it. It's an interesting thought.
    Each member of Moria's crew is a dark paralell of a Straw Hat. Hogback is Dark Chopper, Perona is Dark Nami, Absalom is Dark Sanji, and Moria is Dark Luffy. But what you might overlook is that Zoro also has a paralell. Ryuma. But in this case, I believe Zoro is the Dark Ryuma. Zoro shows great disrespect and irreverence towards Ryuma in the beginning of their fight. He was channeling major demon energy for no good reason. He became a sword gremlin. Ryuma by contranst was an extremely respectful person in life and now even in death. So they are polar opposites. But interestingly, after Thriller Bark, Zoro becomes more reverent. Showing markedly greater respect for the dead and for the traditions of others.

    • @msjones6936
      @msjones6936 Před 6 dny +1

      I think it’s especially neat that the first act of that reverence (respectfully laying his sword to rest) is mirrored by him allowing Ryuma’s sword to finally rest with him in Wano.

    I actually like nightmare luffy. At that point he'd been fully duped by moria into a wild goode chase. He runs into lola and the rest of morias victims. In a rare instance the people luffy is helping hel him in turn. They want to put their hopes into luffy so they offer him 100 shadows to power him up. This quickly gets him back into the fray and levels the playing field and knockout moria for a bit. But what I really like is its still not enough to defeat oars, and its up to all the strawhats to take him down for good

    Really cool analysis overall, I just wanted to add a point one can reflect on:
    You say Moria could've done the same as Luffy, "bounce" back after losing his crew. But Moria actually DID lose his crew, they all died. Luffy didn't, and it was literally the only thing keeping him in check. Jinbe had to punch reason into him again, cause he was on a mental breakdown. What do you think would've happened if he REALLY lost his crew at Sabaody?
    For all we know, Moria said he was like Luffy in his youth, so I think the outcome could've been similar. Everyone you care forever died, it's not easy to bounce back after that, and I don't think even Luffy could pull that off. The self-loathing for not being strong enough to protect them would've killed him, and that's what Moria went through imo.
    That's why he's my favorite character. Despite his demonic appearance, he's so damn "human", relatable in how he reacts and develops after being crushed by the world. When you remain alone at your weakest, with no one to motivate you and remind you what you still have like Jinbe did with Luffy, can you really come back to your senses that easily? I think Moria has a perfectly reasonable development, and not a classic shonen approach becoming either super edgy "I don't need anyone" neither "my willpower is so strong I'll get back anyway".
    I'm just sad Oda didn't give him enough interactions with his living crewmates. He truly cares for them, as we've seen him going to a damn YONKO TERRITORY, and ALONE at that, just to retrieve Absalom. That's some Luffy-tier bullshit, hell not even he went alone to WCI. He's hotheaded, caring for his friends, and determined in what he does, just like the main character we love.
    He just had it worse.
    EDIT: I didn't wait till the end, my bad lol.

    to be honest seeing the straw hats team up to beat moira was one of the greater moments of the series, we rarely ever get to see the straw hats work together like that to take an antagonist off, they all go off to have their own seperate fights, but this time they all planned and worked together to defeat Oars the giant,
    and it also displays how useful chopper is to the crew, only chopper would understand that the spine of oars could be destroyed in that way, allowing Oars to be permanetly disabled and defeated. the fact that Every single crew member all contributed and luffy finished it with a gigantic bazooka was incredible, I really wish we could have seen more stuff like this, it shows how strongs luffy crew is when they actually plan things together.
    im glad that this is the last great villan they defeat as a crew before the time skip, because it finally allowed us to see the crew working as a real unit with practically 90% of the crew there (excluding jimbei)

    3 minutes in and OMG I COMPLETELY AGREE, the weakling trio fights are my favorites each arc bc most of the time they are won by strategy or even luck while strongest members fights are often won by will power which is not that compelling to me.

    I have many respected youtubers I follow that make content about OP, however, for some reason most of them do not like this arc and I completelly agree that it is very underapreciated. I agree with everything you said. One thing I think you should have added though is the end of the arc when moria absorbs all the shadows to attack the strawhats whihc is also the only way for the shadows to be released. Most people think that is just contrived and dumb, they argue that moria could have just waited and the strawhats would be done. And they are not wrong, but it makes sense for moria to do that. In his mind he has to break luffy's spirit just like his was broken. He wants to show luffy that there is no way his tiny crew could defeat even moria, much less a yonko in the new world. And we see again and again in this arc that luffy's crew is completelly outmatched. We see the general zombies and we know they will be an incredible challenge and they are not even the crew. I think the Thriller Bark arc is where we as an audience shoud have noticed what luffy and the crew notice only in shabondy, that they are not ready for the new world. Luffy's crew wins by sheer luck in a lot of fights, luck and guts and persistence etc, but they need more to compete with the greatest.

    It's less evident in the anime, but Thriller Bark in the manga is worth reading just for its visuals.
    It's heavy use of thick lines and intense shading make it the most distinct arc in the whole series in terms of style. Like, this whole arc is just gorgeous to look at.

    If I had the haki to make my own One Piece channel, this video would have inspired me to make this:
    Did Thriller Bark Totally Spoil How Devil Fruits Work?!
    >2 devil fruits introduced were Revive and Shadow
    >Revive shows DF affect your soul
    >Shadow shows if you manipulate your 2 dimensional shadow, your body will be affected 1 dimensionally: physically (in 3D space)
    >theory/hypothesis: DFs bind to the soul like a layer of wax. They manipulate the soul at will, which affects the body 2 dimensionally: physically and/or in an alien way (sometimes in 4D space, like the Pocket fruit)

    This is a little flawed because if Luffys crew had all been killed at shabaody we don't know how he would of reacted as he was kinda broken after ace. Also, moria was definitely trying to make a come back as a pirate. That's the point of most of the shichibukai, they pretend to be inactive while gathering power. Moria straight up said he didn't have powerful enough shadows for his zombies. He was waiting for an 100 million bounty for oars.

    I think the problem is that people refuse to look at thriller bark under any other lens than “the typical one piece” arc type.
    Thriller bark is silly as hell. It’s funny as hell. It’s clearly the most comedic relief of the entire series. It’s much less linear than other arcs for the time. The dialogue in this arc is extremely underrated.
    Imo if Oda made thriller bark less comedy focused or made Moria more menacing, the fandom as a whole would hold it in a better view.

  • @Philip-rs2vz
    @Philip-rs2vz Před 3 dny

    Hey I just realized something, with kaido dead, that means Moria would actually regain his drive as a pirate once again. Not only that but he would be thankful to Luffy. Now remember moria has no real crew of his own, so really there is really only one option for him left, and that is to join someone else's crew. That crew would either be cross guild, or in an ironic twist of fate, luffy's crew. As Luffy is the man who took down kaido, it would be fitting for the man who lost everything to kaido to join his crew. And while he may have originally been an enemy of Luffy, his wacky appearance would certainly fit right in with the rest of the straw hats.

  • @nl396
    @nl396 Před 5 dny +6

    I strongly disagree with the idea of needing to see the Strawhats fight together more. Way back in Thriller Bark we saw them fight Oars together to emphasize they weren't ready for the new world. Now whenever they split up it shows how far they've come since the pre time skip, we don't need to see them fight together just cause some fans miss it.

    Skypeia and Trillerbark are top 5 arcs. Maybe thats partly because thats when i caught up with the anime, started the manga later and caught up in whole cake, but these are peak OP. Skypeia is the absolute peak adventure for the entire series and the is no chance to beat the adventure of it. Thriller Bark is one of the few arcs that wasn't 1v1 or 1 crew 1 crew. These are the arcs are are the free est from standard arcs. Peak op and so many are blind to them.

    Moria, Seto Kaiba, and Gentle Criminal from MHA both occupy this strange space in anime of "normal guy who doesn't realize they're not the main character." Like, they all do stuff that's very typical of MCs, they rush into stuff without a plan, they try to follow their dreams, and they all made the same dumb mistakes as the MCs. The only difference is the universe forgives the mc and punishes them. Moria doesn't get to stroll into Wano to fight an actual demon and leave stronger than ever. Gentle doesn't get rewarded for trying to intervene in a tragedy. Seto doesn't get to reap only the good parts of messing with ancient magic
