    FAQ:
    - What do you mean by "local area"?
Local means anywhere you are able, or willing, to go on foot (or bike or wheelchair).
    - Can we use transport to get to the bottom of the mountain?
Ideally not. If it's too far for you to walk to, find a smaller hill closer to you.
    - But I live in the midde of the Alps / Rockies / Himalayas!
Hmm. Yes. Tricky. Maybe try reducing the size of your "local area" until you find something you're willing to climb.
    - What if the highest hill near me is private property?
Just climb the highest point you can get to.
    - But I live at the highest point in my area!
Ah yeah. Hadn't thought of that. Don't share a photo of your house on the internet if you don't want to...

Aha! I posted an event for a local hiking Meetup group much like this -- called it "local highpointing". We sent everyone out, starting from wherever they were, and had them tag the highest place they could get to under their own steam. Suggested trick to make it more "interesting": At any turn, take the direction that goes steepest upward. At a local maximum, where all paths lead downward, reverse the scheme, and follow the most steep downward path. Avoid going the same way twice. If that doesn't hit the actual local highpoint, after a while, just head straight there.

Soo the highest point in Wisconsin,USA is a place called Timm's Hill. It's relatively flat to the surrounding area,so it definitely fits the mediocre category. You don't actually climb or even walk up it as it is in the middle of a forest. You drive to a park and the only thing you see is trees. Ummm... the Dallas river valley has two ridges of highest ground, which are where we put all the TV antennas on major roads. And actually climbing the rock Ft Worth is built on would be impressive, and probably illegal.

In Ireland, we're now allowed to go anywhere within our county (or at most 20km if crossing county boundaries).
I live in the flattest county in the country. Its not the lowest county, but it has a prominence of a whopping 50m. Fairly sure it won't be the most mediocre but in a fairly hilly country it'll be comparatively pathetic

The highest hill near to me is all of 39.39m / 103’ above sea level. It’s underneath a hospital.
I don’t much fancy going there anytime soon.
I’m also fairly sure that includes all the floors, as it’s a tiny spot of red on the map, surrounded by 5m terrain.
There was a barrow mound, but they bulldozed that for a car park. Hooray, culture!
The next closest in height is 13.1m / 42’. It’s a bridge footing, and that’s the built-up height.
    There’s a reclaimed dump at 10.97m / 36’. It’s closed for COVID-19.
The high point of the county is an hour distant by car, 19.81m / 65’, and closed for COVID-19.
Does standing at the highest point of a lift bridge span count as a mediocre mountain?
If only my neighbour still had that pile of mulch!

There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of ham radio operators who are into this sort of thing, through the "Summits On The Air" program. They have in-depth lists and maps of local high points. It's basically a contest to see how many mediocre mountains you can make radio contacts from/to. But viewers here could use their resources to locate high points near them.

If it's too flat can we MAKE our own mountain? Thinking get a couple of bin bags, fill with soil, climb (after lots of practice, maybe take a course in mountaineering first, just to be safe) and on reaching the summit, plant a flag? Bit worried that oxygen will be required two bin-bags high.

Ok, based on that map, I just found out the highest point in the city where I live ('s-Hertogenbosch) is in the middle of a lake... a lake called "De IJzeren Vrouw" (The Iron Lady)... named after the digging machine that was used to dig it out... in order to elevate the surrounding land as they were building a neighborhood there... Yep, the most mediocre mountain in my area is a hole that was dug in order to increase the height of the surrounding area... can it get any more Dutch than that? But this does mean, that I might just have to get myself a little dingy to partake :D
(Oh, in case you want to look it up, it's labeled on the map by the name of the park surrounding it: Prins Hendrikpark.)

The highest hill near me that I am willing to walk to is extremely mediocre height-wise (only 120 m), but otherwise quite remarkable. It is a bunch of rubble from WWII piled atop a former Nazi military college, with a cold war era spy-installation on top.
Don't know whether this counts as mediocre.
