Avocado seed husks could be a gold mine of medicinal and industrial compounds

  • In a first-of-its-kind study, scientists report that avocado seed husks, which are usually discarded along with the seed, are hidden gold mines packed with a previously unrecognized plethora of chemical compounds. They say these compounds could eventually be used to treat a host of debilitating diseases, as well as to enhance the allure of cosmetics, perfumes and other consumer goods.

I am surprised of all the critical remarks just because a scientist has an accent. This is sad. An American accent has nothing to do with intellectual capacity. Science is a global study... it is our benefit that we study as a global world and not just a single culture. Accents are a natural byproduct of global science... how narrow minded if we haven’t taken the time to broaden our minds and study other cultures and languages.

shut up. Our culture welcomes more people than any other culture. Our culture is the only culture that brings others in an allows them to succeed - what other people on Earth do this? We are not narrow minded. This has nothing to do with anybody's inability to speak proper English. If they are so smart they should be able to do this.

Thanks a lot for sharing this information. I agree with many friends passing humanistic comments that native English accent has nothing to do with his diligence. I am a professor teaching human rights in Nepal and teach my student that every accent is beautiful and this is the beauty of "diversified identity". and we have to respect.

Doctors, Dr. Bandyopadhyay, etc, thank you for this presentation. I came upon this quite by accident. While making bone broth, I tossed in an avocado, missing the seed. When completing the processing, I found the seed and was alarmed as I had no idea what compounds are in the avocado seed, it's affects on humans when ingesting, and ect. Needless to say, you provided me with a great deal of info, more than I was initially looking for. Thank you for your research and hard work!

Answering several questions and providing that much information takes brain power. There’s always research to be done. Overall, good presentation of findings. p.s. if you can’t understand him, maybe you should try listening instead of listening to your head telling you you can’t because of his accent. Most of what he’s saying is clear enough to make out and understand.

Obviously collection of the seed skin would be something for industry to consider and implement due to the quantities necessary for economical extraction. The idea of consumers doing this instead of industry would necessitate an appropriate monetary incentive which might not be there. It was not entirely clear that he is talking about the thin pit skin, not the avocado peel or pit mass itself. I am wondering if the pit mass contains oleocanthal or other similar phenolic compounds. He missed the point of the last important question, the value of the peel, of which there is considerable more available. A question for the doctor, has he published a list of the compounds he found?

Seeds are supposed to be dispersed from a tree for continuity of life. once the fruit has been eaten, we have the seed coat and seed itself. So to protect it from all the other tough conditions like disease, animals, etc. THe seed has these chemical compunds to make it out on the toughest of conditions. Theres no need to talk about waste here. But good job dr, well researched

So having weighed a few avacardo husks; average weight being 1/2 a gram. With his % of BBP; let's take 'pret a mange' stats of using 5million avacardo per year in the UK that would = 2.5 tonnes of husk. This would then = 250kg of BBP. At the moment the whole sale price per tonne is $2500-$3500. So all of prets waste avacardo seeds will net them $625-$875 per year if they could refine it them selves. It is not commercially viable with just this chemical as transport and extraction would negate any profit. BBP being an extremely hazardous compound when refined for use in the plastics industry.

Is Just Me.. I can’t understand the sentence you wrote either! So you probably shouldn’t judge a foreign language speaker’s accent when you can’t speak English yourself. Bottom line... if someone speaks English with an accent, it means they are fluent in at least one or more other languages which makes them far more intelligent and educated than most people.
