  • There’s a lot of weird things in early Yu-Gi-Oh that make us say “what were they thinking” looking at how the game has evolved. A handful of early monsters were recolored and repositioned to create “new” monsters. Sometimes they were clearly intended to be related to the monster they were based on, while other times, they were trying to pull the wool over our eyes and hope we didn’t notice some of the differences. We discuss some of the funnier and weirder scenarios that these lookalikes had. Judgment Meter and A.T. from Software Agents TV join me for this video.

Yup, Eternal Duelist Soul and Worldwide Edition. Back then, I had no idea how to get more than 1 of the good cards because the sets almost always gave me trash, just like I had no idea which deck to choose. It turns out it's been updated on the wiki:
      yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Yu-Gi-Oh!_The_Eternal_Duelist_Soul
Spoilers: All 3 starter decks are basically the same (either swapping Mirror Force for Bell of Destruction, or alternating between Raigeki/Snatch Steal/Premature Burial), but the red comes with an 1800 beater, and all 3 come with most other Staples (a 1700 beater, Summoned Skull, and 90% of the good limited S/T staples). The tiny differences don't really matter since all are limited cards that you could enter 8 digit card numbers to get cards you don't own anyways, and all are limited cards relatively easy to get from multiple packs if you feel that is somehow cheating.
      That being said, limited cards in boosters weren't really valuable as semi or unlimited cards, so you're better off trying to get Trap Holes and Fissures from the Dark Magician Pack (default), CyberStein/Morphing Jar/Penguin Soldier from Garoozies (Tier 3 default-beat each Tier 2 each 3x), Axe of Despair/MST from Relinquished (win 10 Tier 3's), most decent staples from Blue-Millenium Puzzle (win 10 Tier 4's) and secretly grinding against Mako 20 duels to unlock Gemini Elf pack that came with Gemini Elf, Giant Red Seasnake and Graceful Charity (semi), that is until you get the Vorse Raider/Widespread Ruin from the gold Millenium Puzzle pack (beat the November annual tournament, unlock/beat Simon+you get 1 card of each+unlock Truesdale/Solomon, which is the final character in the game!);
[Also worth noting, Battle Ox pack that comes with La Jinn, Launcher Spider that comes with 7 Colored Fish, Buster Blader pack that comes with Harpie's Brother/Extermination/Crossout, and Millenium Eye that comes with other staples, but the problem is you'd need to beat Mai, Umbra, Yugi, and Kaiba all 20x Each, so it's not as rewarding, and outside of those Tier 2 1800's OFFER NOTHING BUT TRASH.]
Similarly and most frustrating of all, 80% of the other packs are filled with TRASH, even when you'd think they would be good, like the harder to unlock and intentionally confusingly similar in appearance and unlocking method Green Millenium Puzzle pack (beat each Tier 4 each 10x) comes with absolute trash (except unplayable Obelisk), Cyber Harpie doesn't even have Cyber Harpie (beat Tier 1 each 10x), Blue-Eyes Ultimate is has nothing but 10 fusions but no Cyber Stein (Tier 4 default, beat each Tier 3 each 4x), BLS similarly is 16 useless Rituals (beat each Tier 3 each 10x), Blue-Eyes/Exodia (beat Yugi/Joey each 20x) are literally dilluted OCG versions to the default Dark Magician/Red-Eyes packs, Gate Guardian (win 10 Tier 2 Duels) is just as bad as the first packs you unlock, Tiger Axe and Judge Man, which are secretly worse than the default packs Dark Magician/Red-Eyes/Mystical Elf, in fact all of these are essentially worse!!

Yeah. That´s because when first appearing in the manga, the card game was not only a reference of Magic: The Gathering, but also to Dungeons & Dragons. That is also the reason why, when first appearing in the manga, the game was named Dragons & Wizards. That also is the reason of the wierd rules seen in the Duelist Kingdom saga of the anime. The rules we now know and love would not be settled until the Battle City arc in both the anime and the manga. But, returning to the point, in the beginning the game have a lot of RPG elements. And one of the most common tropes in RPGs, specially japanese ones, is the Underground Monkey trope: Enemies in advanced parts of the game that are recolors of weaker enemies. In part because designing new enemies is kinda hard. In part because RPGs games for consoles have limited memory space.

I'm thinking gate guardian could either be retrained as a fusion or xyz monster since xyz summoning is very reminiscent of the way you stack the three pieces to make one body. Either way, good news here is that other people want gate guardian arcgetype too, I'd say it's on the higher end of duel monsters era cards that could get modern support, along side valon's armor cards.

Whoa, I never noticed that Kaiser Sea Horse and Sea Serpent Warrior of Darkness were counterparts to each other.
Also I suspect the reason why it's the LIGHT two-tribute support monster is to make it essentially indirect Blue-Eyes support, because the kanji in Kaiba's name (海
馬) can translate to "Sea" and "Horse" respectively, so it's a nod to Kaiba to have a seahorse monster be the one that can bring out Blue-Eyes with one tribute.

And in that game, Cosmo Queen is a ritual monster, and one of the 3 monsters you need to sacrifice for her is Dark Elf, alongside Queen of Autumn Leaves (who also has a counterpart in green phantom king) and Princess of Tsurugi (who as it so happens was also mentioned in this video, funnily enough).

All of this elaborating on Wall Shadow...too bad for a missed opportunity like this:
    Labyrinth Duel
    Field Spell
When this card is activated, you can Special Summon 1 "Labyrinth Wall" from your hand, deck, or GY, then add 1 "Labyrinth" card from your deck to your hand. Each time a monster(s) is summoned (including in the Extra Monster Zone), place them in the next available Monster Zone(s) closest to their user's Field Spell Zone; also, once per turn, the turn player can move any number of their monsters on their side of the field to the closest (horizontal) available Monster Card Zones. Monsters cannot target other monsters for attacks, unless they are in the same columns. Once per turn, if your opponent activates a card or effect, you can add 1 "Kazejin", "Suijin", or "Sanga of the Thunder" from your deck or GY to your hand. Once per turn, if this card is targeted by a card effect, you can discard 1 level 5 or higher monster; negate that effect.
    The Labyrinth's Power
    Continuous Spell
Level 5 or higher Normal Monsters do not require tributes to normal summon/set. You can only activate one of the effects of "The Labyrith's Power", based on the number of other "Labyrinth" cards you control with different names, once per turn:
1+: You can target any number of monsters on your field, GY, or banished, except effect monsters (minimum 1); shuffle them into the deck, then add 1 "Labyrinth" card from your deck or GY to your hand.
2+: Special Summon 1 "Labyrinth Tank" from your Extra Deck or GY, then you can target 1 Spell/Trap card on the field; banish it.
3+: Special Summon 1 "Monster Tamer" from your hand, deck, or GY and if you do, take control of one of your opponent's monsters they control, but you cannot Special Summon for the rest of this turn.
4+: Add 1 "Riryoku" from your deck or GY to your hand, then flip all face-down monsters and/or change all effect monsters on the field to ATK position, and if you do, draw 1 card.
5+: You can apply all of the previous effects, in any order.
    A Trap in the Labyrinth!?
    Trap
    Activate one of these effects:
Send 1 "Jirai Gumo" from your field, hand or deck to the GY, or banish it from the GY; destroy 1 monster in this card's column and inflict damage to your opponent equal to half the original ATK of that monster.
Banish 1 "Dungeon Worm" from your field, hand or deck; banish all other cards in this card's column.
If your opponent moves a monster(s) to adjacent monster zone(s) while you control a "Labyrinth" card, you can send 1 other "Labyrinth" card you control to the GY; shuffle 1 "Jirai Gumo" from your GY into you deck, then, set this card from your GY, also, this card can be activated this turn. You can only use each effect of "A Trap in the Labyrinth!?" once per turn.
    The Labyrinth's Guardian
    Continuous Trap
You can only control 1 "Gate Guardian", also, "Gate Guardian" can attack 3 monsters during each Battle Phase. Once per turn, you can reveal 1 "Kazejin", "Suijin", and "Sanga of the Thunder" from your hand, field, GY, or are Banished; Special Summon 1 "Gate Guardian" from your hand, deck, GY, or is Banished ignoring summoning conditions. When an opponent targets a card you control with a monster effect or for an attack, you can banish from your hand or GY, 1 "Kazejin", "Suijin", or "Sanga of the Thunder"; negate that attack or effect. If this card, or "Gate Guardian" leaves the field because of an opponent's card (by battle or effect), return all other monsters on the field to their controller's hands except "Gate Guardian", also, you can Special Summon 1 "Kazejin", "Suijin", and/or "Sanga of the Thunder" from your hand, deck, GY, or banished zone, and if you do, you cannot summon from the extra deck until your opponent's next turn.
If you control "Labyrinth Wall", this card can be activated the turn it was set.
    The Shadow Inside the Labyrinth
    Quick-Play Spell
Equip 1 "Magical Labyrinth" from you hand, deck, or GY to 1 monster you control, and/or, and move any of your opponent's face-up monsters to their other Main Monster Mones, then if you do either of these, Special Summon "Wall Shadow" from your hand, deck, GY, or is Banished, ignoring it's summoning conditions, and equip this card to it with this effect: Once per turn (Quick Effect), you can move "Wall Shadow" to any available Main Monster Zone. If "Wall Shadow" attacks an opponent's monster, during the Damage Step, that monster's ATK becomes half of it's original attack, also, negate it's effects (if any), and if it is destroyed by battle, banish it, and if you do, add 1 "Kazejin", "Suijin", or "Sanga of the Thunder" from your deck and/or any "Labyrinth" card from your GY to your hand. You can only activate each effect of "The Shadow Inside the Labyrinth" once per turn.
Interesting cards that interact are Ground Collapse (adding a sort of attack block with "Labyrinth Duel"), Wattkinetic Puppeteer might be used as a sort of interruption during the BP, or allow Gate Guardian to fully attack 3x monsters under Labyrinth Duel (when paired with "Shadow"), Senet Switch might speed things up, Indigo Eclipse would probably benefit too. And of course BEWD would be a pretty strong Normal Summon, though this Time I guess it would be allowed to move as long as it didn't use flight, lol. "Guardian" can have players finally experience the indivual pieces power, but all at once. The field spell slows the game down, but should it be removed, Gate Guardian can show off it's true power...

A field spell or pendulum monster effect for wall shadow would be cool, something like:
If wall shadow was properly summoned. During your end phase return wall shadow to the deck from the field. During your standby phase select Wall shadow from the deck and place it on the field in attack position.
It's not meta, just a fun gimmick.
