- Our first stop on our Colorado Tour is one of the most scenic railroads in the world the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. Cumbres & Toltec is a 64 mile line that was once part of the Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge mainline that today runs between the villages of Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado. The locomotives pulling the trains are a pair of 1925 Baldwin built former Denver & Rio Grande Western K-36 Mikados numbered 484 and 489 and they both once worked on this exact same line over half a century ago. The elevation at Chama is just under 8 thousand feet and the elevation of Cumbres Pass is right at 10 thousand feet so the first 14 miles of the line has a gradient of 4%. We chased the steam locomotives along the first 14 miles of the line to watch them work extremely hard to conquer the steep 4% grade to Cumbres Pass which many railfans would agree is one of the best shows in railroading. The Cumbres & Toltec is the perfect place to see steam locomotives in action along with breathtaking scenery. If you’re ever in the northern part of New Mexico please make sure to stop by the great little village of Chama and take a ride or railfan this incredible railroad.

Absolutely jaw dropping, brings back the memories of when I went back in 2014.
Beautiful area with great scenery, town, and people. Nice place to enjoy the train and related history.
Great photography of train. Thanks for sharing a great video of our train in Colorado and New Mexico. It’s was an awesome video I have seen in a long time. Very well done. 👍👍‼️‼️
Great work as always. Glad you had a great time out here.
Thanks Jack.
Absolutely stunning Ty! This place really is a true gem
Thanks Joe!
Another good video, Ty! Really liked seeing both engines without the spark arrestors, and nice to see them really blowing 484's whistle. You were much luckier than I was!
Awesome video! I was there the 2nd chasing as well
Excellent work! Your Tanglefoot segment was really good. It was good to meet you in Chama!
Thanks, it was great meeting you too.
Whenever I go back to Colorado again, I definitely need to check out the C&TS someday. Good video as always Ty! 🤟
Thanks Dylan.
@@TyTytheTrainGuy anytime.
Just watching this is making me hyped for my ride behind it, not sure what engine I'll be riding behind as it's the 10am train, but I really hope it's 484. 🤞
484, is my favorite one too, I got up on it and shoved coal in the fire box. It was feeling I never forget. Jeff was the engineer. Trying to find a day it’s not raining 🌧 there to ride this year
