Speaking as a nurse (acute hospital care for over 20 yrs) I can see lots of front line workers are leaving in droves due to the stress and understaffing. I really worry about the state of our healthcare, in a few years there will be no staff to care for people. :(
The reality is that most of us will need those NHS staff at some point in our future and if we dont protect them they just wont be there.

Most people aren’t getting any pay rise at all. Teachers have worked through it all too with a lot of extra work teaching the children still in school as well as online teaching and organising remote learning for the pupils at home. No pay rise. Care workers in care homes generally have lower pay, poorer pensions, longer hours than similar workers in the NHS. No pay rise. It’s only 1% but its1% more than most people.

You don't have to go for these extreme individual cases. It's always hard to make a comparative argument between a hand full insanely rich guys and a giant worker group ( not saying these saleries arn't insane but the comparison is always difficult). But you can simple look at other systemic sectors we have no issue financing. Industry subsedies are rarely ever in question. We have military forces who are broadly financed and supported just in CASE something could happen. We can aparently plan ahead and do economic math in those sectors. But we can't even finance the healthcare sector and pay the fighters there WHILE a pandemic is devestating the globe?
My point is while your argument is valid it's not all 'if only greedy capitalism wasn't so injust' (shakefist). Even within such a capitalistic system we all as citizens of wealthy states chose to not care about healthcare and continue to ignore it.

@@DarkHarlequin I mean, just tomorrow I'm going to a demonstration for the healthcare system in my country, it's hard to believe that it's citizens fault for not caring enough. But I guess you're right, how else could it have been ignored by the government?

    • @DarkHarlequin
      @DarkHarlequin Před 3 lety +1

@@VashdaCrash Excelent layer of sarcasm. But I'm saying the exact opposite. that it's not simple the fault of THAT one group. Is it unjust that CEOs get giant bonuses while healthcare workers get low wages? No. Regardless of that issue the same end the people who all clapped with tears in their eyes on their balconies for heroes keep voting for parties who gutted the healthcare system in prior years. So stands to reason that aparently when push comes to shove other issues seem to matter more to them.
Politicians can keep ignoring some peoples demands as long as their have enough other people behind them. My point is not that individual citizens (like maybe you) don't care enough. My point is that when we come down to brass tax not enough people care.

If there's something that this pandemic is showing is the necessity to change the basis that guides the way that the health system (and really all the system works).
But specially when it comes to the sacrifices that the people on the medical sector have to be making constantly, from a time consumed by studying putting in risk their mental, financial, physical and emotional health.
When the "medicine game" is socially regarded as financial game, status bringer or, total and mayor sacrifice we as a group disregard the integral role that health, not only as medical consultation, but as every aspect of our life has to be the center of our existence -not in this "be healthy, be happy" consumerist void that is put up by social media and influencers- but as the fact that well-being is a basic human right and as one it must not be lead to the individual action or only public policies, but to a social contract in which we recognize the fact that health is not a state, is not product, is not an individual responsibility but a social effort, that requires all of us to be aware of what we need to strive for.
    Otherwise we're doomed.

Cleaning product companies like Lysol, for one example, made a killing money-wise during this pandemic also. Cleaning/Janitorial supply companies, Hepa filter companies, plexiglass manufacturers, vitamin manufacturers, Internet service providers, IT companies, and Google Chromebook (and Google in general) also reaped massive financial gains due to the pandemic and the various school lockdowns.
Strangely enough, computer tech suppliers and construction material and furniture stores made out pretty well financially, since most homebound people turned to hobbies of building PCs, DIY building projects, and home redecorating in order to keep themselves occupied while isolated.
But we all know that scalpers probably benefited the most, since items from toilet paper to graphic cards to IKEA furniture are all available on eBay for 4X what they are really worth at MSRP. It’s sad really and makes me hopeful that this pandemic will eventually end so the economy will eventually stabilize. Though I doubt it will return to what it was ever.

Back in 2018 we got a 1% at the place I work. Was a bit of an insult. And I think the reason was money grubbing; we had 2% Fed tax reduction so they were probably thinking "Oh, let's give them just a 1% raise, with the 2% tax cut it'll be as if they got a 3% anyway on their checks."
    1% is an insult.
Anyway, if my employer's thoughts were along those lines, it backfired because with-holdings on dependents were changed so that not to take as much out in taxes... so when taxes hit those with dependents/kids ended up actually owing money when taxes were to be filed for the year. Making many people grumpy because they may not have saved to pay a tax bill and rather thought they would get a refund on a portion of their taxes.

      @jmitterii2 Před 3 lety

To add to your situation of 1% which completely sucks.
Here in the states, several urgent and family care clinics have actually shut down for cost cutting. Our non-existent medical system, instead we have what I call "A hustle under a bridge" healthcare system, my family doctor that I just setup last July and had gone to the same clinic with different doctor since 2006, just closed last October.
Had a check up July/August... thought wow finally have a primary care physician, what you would call your GP. Got a letter in September that clinic and staff would be closing due to cost cutting end of October 2020. Easy come, easy go.
Back to being without a primary doctor... the worst part is that only primary doctors can fill long term Rx. Fortunately, I have only one long term one and it isn't super critical like insulin or something for Lupus.
The major medical groups in the Boise Idaho area are not for profits St Luke and St Al's owned by the Catholic church. They lost revenues due to the pandemic interfering with elective surgeries. So many medical staff through the area are part of that group and were laid off. The for profits also cut staff at locations; as well as charged ridiculous rates for testing in the Summer... my test cost me out of my own pocket $245 plus they billed my insurance for $100 separately; which my insurance paid 100% of $100. So they got $345 altogether... talk about a hustle... a test they knew I would need just to go back to work... and later would find out I need to even see my new family doctor for a complete physical... the clinic wasn't seeing anyone with COVID19 like symptoms unless they had a recent negative COVID19 test.
They saw me, to do a complete physical, urine sample analysis and blood analysis as well as a tetanus shot.
My family doctor and that entire clinic location was closed down in October.
A coworker whose wife is a nurse working at a hospital was laid off for a short period too when the COVID ward and other areas were slow.
I guess it's not that much comfort with "it could be worse" news.
I just have to mention this to let you know, and all you UK'ers to save what you have. The NHS is literally the envy of the world.
We Americans can't even imagine having something like a medical program that's essentially like public compulsory education K-12, fire service or police service.
We've been hit with the money grubbers' stick for so long, we have a horrible Stockholm syndrome or maybe it's just a futile fatalism; a study from Princeton University revealed the average American has exactly 0% influence on politics in our country. Only special interest groups and those individuals of high executive positions and those with assets in the millions and billions of wealth and income.... plutocracy anyone?
      Anyway, UK'ers support your doctors.
Don't allow it to devolve into the hustle mess we have in the states.
      It's a freaking disaster.

The problem with the pay rise being the way it is, is that it risks discouraging new people from entering professions like nursing. If the government demonstrates their disdain for the work that they do (most of the nurses I know already went either without breaks or with much shorter breaks than they're entitled to even before COVID) after this year, on top of cancelling the bursary (in 2017, I think) is like inviting a staffing problem in the future.
I know nurses aren't in the job to get rich, but this is a slap in the face.

One should be paid commensurately for the qualifications they bring, and then working every day for a year in an environment that could literally kill you if you slip just once, or at least cause illness and harm, and the loss of your capacity to treat patients, damn right 1% pay raises are a slap in the face.

I feel like in the NHS their are so many management departments that are paid to support the clinical staff but if the staff on the ground they are supposed to be supporting aren't even being paid that well, what's the point? The NHS loves to say they are patient focused but the way I see it who is one notch above the patient? It's the clinical staff that are directly caring for them, the people on the ground.
I'm tired of people in power wasting money on vanity projects without consulting staff then saying there's no more money left for the bare essentials, particularly in the time of the pandemic.
No money for pay to rise at the rate of inflation for band 2 workers, no money to do anything but make do and mend office equipment falling apart, no money to repair the old ceiling of rooms in Victorian hospitals that are ready to cave in..

My view is that health care workers shouldn't get a 1% pay rise. It is has been a financially hard year you need to keep balance in the future. What they should get however is a 5% share of the market cap of the stock exchange. Simply create a fund, let the companies issue 5% new shares and donate the to that fund which can be used to pay yearly bonuses, crisis bonuses etc in the future.

The commonly held idea we "can't afford" to fund our NHS and pay its workers properly is simply bad economics. A sovereign nation that prints its own money and has a national debt in its own currency is not like a household budget going overdrawn at the bank.
The Bank of England increases the money supply mostly by magically adding numbers on the big banks' balance sheets so they can lend it out - but imagine that all UK NHS workers were paid in physical Nye Bevan fivers. A chunk is retained by the Government in tax anyway, but then you could watch the rest of those Nye Bevan fivers flowing through the economy, in shops, rent, every purchase made.
Every £1 put into our NHS actually creates £2-4 in the economy, not to mention the good the Service does in other ways. Check out Modern Monetary Theory or just have a read of this from the TUC.

    1% pay rise.... Really?
Here in the Netherlands, those who have worked with covid patients get a bonus. However, only if you dont earn too much -- which excludes most doctors. But it does include cleaners, but then excludes administrative staff (appointment planners, front office workers, etc).
The hospitals wisely called it a team effort, and broadly applied the bonus to all hospital workers. Since we all put forth our best to keep up health care, the best we could. Both for covid, as for all regular patients -- as well as catching up on postponed care after the waves.
The bonus: 1000eu in november 2020. And another 500eu in summer of 2021.
To put that into perspective, the average nurse in our hospital makes 2000-2500eu a month.
The yearly pay rise is still being negociated, but will likely not be much after the poor economic forecast will become more clear.
