    I love how much this humanised doctors. As a nursing student I find even student doctors intimidating, its nice to know that while the level of education is different, we're all still nervous wrecks hoping not to make mistakes!

      100%! I'm a med student and often hear students say how they dislike medical students for feeling "superior" and we're all in the same boat

    Thank you so much! You have no idea how much your channel has helped me. A year ago I was in a really bad place mental health wise, completely unmotivated, drinking heavily and bordering on giving up on life itself. This year I’ve discovered medicine and I’m really enjoying working hard in school. I stopped drinking and started working hard and your channel only fuels that, thank you.

    We complain about and worry about the youth of today and then I see something like this and feel a huge amount of "pride" . Pride is in commas because I have nothing here to be proud about but someone should be proud - that's for sure.

    This is such a relatable video, thanks so much for making it! I'm in the same position, final year, and the thoughts of these UK students are the same as mine, despite being in different countries. It's so reassuring to know that we all feel the same way on opposite sides of the world and that my anxieties are completely normal, and that other people look forward to the same things as me!

    So as an American I'm fairly ignorant of the education system for physicians in the United Kingdom. You graduate high school and immediately begin a 6-year medical school, then do a few years of residency (depending on the specialty)?

    • @TheMrsar28
      @TheMrsar28 Před 6 lety +6

      The typical first year medical student would be 18 years of age, and it's normally a five year degree...six at some select universities i.e. Oxford / Cambridge. Once graduated newly qualified doctors train for a further two years in the 'foundation programme' and thereafter are able to apply to a dedicated speciality. Hope that helps!

    Senior in Med School, finishing in July! I relate so much to their replies! For the first question my story is a bit different. From a young age I helped my parents take care of two sick relatives because we couldn't afford a full time helper in the house and from that came the desire of helping other families and 15 years later here I am. Loving your content, you got yourself a new subscriber! #makesureyoustillhavealife #sotrue

    I know it's a stupid question but what is a teaching fellow, are you from the teaching staff of the university??

    • @DrHopeSickNotes
      @DrHopeSickNotes  Před 6 lety +5

      Great question!
      Clinical Teaching Fellow jobs are so varied, they are based on the demands of the hospital (i.e. what departments they need doctors) and the set-up of the university (i.e. how many students, level of the students and what areas they need the students trained in). The common theme is that you work as a doctor part-time and part-time teaching students; and therefore you are employed by the hospital. So my primary role is medical students, but I also help with other teaching as and when it comes up, e.g. nurses training, falls training for every clinical staff member, admin side of post-graduate doctor training.
      I look after all the 3rd and 5th year medical students on their clinical placements; delivering lectures, workshops, clinical skills, bedside teaching, simulation training, mock exams.

    Wait I'm confused , you finished 6 years of studying medicine I college and now your a junior doctor, but for how long and is there any other schooling required after this?

    • @DrHopeSickNotes
      @DrHopeSickNotes  Před 6 lety +4

      Yes it's pretty confusing. In the UK after medical school you are a junior doctor until you become a consultant or GP (you'll be on a training programme specific to what you want to go in to with specific exams).
      So you usually spending between 5-10 years as a junior doctor.

    • @favoura8891
      @favoura8891 Před 6 lety +2

      Dr Hope's Sick Notes let's say you wanted to study neurology and you were a junior doctor, how long would it take before you actually become a fully qualified neurologist ?

    • @DrHopeSickNotes
      @DrHopeSickNotes  Před 6 lety +2

      In the UK to be a consultant neurologist, you would be a junior doctor for at least 9 years.
      - 2 years Foundation Training
      - 2 years Core Medical Training (it's currently 2 years but increasing to 3 years)
      - 5 years Neurology Clinical Training (+/- 3 years for research)
      Further information on neurology training is here: www.abnt.org.uk/docs/Becoming_a_Neurologist_ABN.pdf

    • @favoura8891
      @favoura8891 Před 6 lety +2

      Dr Hope's Sick Notes thank you! And how long do it if you wanted to be a cardiothoracic surgeon ? And while your a junior doctor and onwards, do you get paid and how much and does it increase each year ? Also what path are you thinking of specializing in ?

    • @DrHopeSickNotes
      @DrHopeSickNotes  Před 6 lety +3

      For Cardiothoracic it would be a similar amount of time to the above; you'd do foundation training, then core surgical training, then specialty training. You take on more and more responsibilities are you progress, so it's not unusual for a core surgical trainee to be doing some minor operations. I'm thinking of acute medicine / emergency medicine, but at the moment I'm doing a teaching fellow position, which am really enjoying.

    Anyone with advice? I am a final year college student who wants to go into the ambulance service before going into medicine so that I gain both medical and also life experience. Does anyone advice or their opinion on whether this is the best way to do this (I did not achieve my sciences so want to do them as a night class until I get my A levels), I have asked multiple doctors I know personally but I feel that they may only agree to my plan because they know me. Please help!!!

    • @DanielHoffmanddhoffman
      @DanielHoffmanddhoffman Před 6 lety

      Hey Conor. Not sure where you are living, but I'm a medical student in the United States, so I can only speak to my experience but a lot of people took time to do other things in between undergrad and medical school. If you aren't in the US and have a 6 year program after secondary school it might be a little different, but one thing that medical schools look for is people who are well-rounded and are likely to keep their empathy through the rigors and bureaucracy of medicine. There is no one-size-fits-all recommendation for you, but as long as you want to do it and think it will make you a better doctor, than say so when on your future interviews! Good luck!
