  • Filmmaker Mike Magidson, a native Californian living in Paris, and French anthropologist Nastassja Martin have just landed in Petropavlovsk, the capital of Kamchatka. Over recent years, Nastassja has developed close ties with an Even family, former reindeer herders, and today, she is back to introduce her baby daughter to them.
From the capital, they set off on a 700km trip through majestic inhospitable landscapes at -30°, crossing a mining and military zone and completing the last stretch on snowmobiles. Finally, they arrive in Tvaian, a hunting camp cut off from all means of communication. Daria and her family live there in tune with their traditions and in a spiritual relationship with their environment.
Documentary: Kamchatka - EP1: Winter With the Evens
Directed by: Nastassja Martin, Mike Magidson

I started crying when she chanted. It was like her way of preserving a song and dance on top of asking the ancestors to give her sister a safe trip back to her home. We can not lose the ancestors of our lives. Keep their memories alive in your heart. These are people that know how to be patient and happy. Even if their lives can be harsh.

It shows us that even with all the amenities we have it doesn't guarantee happiness. if you pay attention you see the family unity and eternal gratitude they have for what nature provides for their family. We all could learn a valuable life lesson from this documentary. I was moved by this video it reminds me our ancestors roots and how survival was the name of the game, nowadays people lose they're minds if the CZcams stops working!

"Even the dead are from your family." Beautiful. Daria is a stunning human being. Earlier, in the cabin, when she began to sob after re-enacting a chant...well, it was profoundly moving. It was an honor to join this family, however briefly.

These are great films of this family, i cant get enough. I myself migrated to the jungles of central America and live off the land as much as possible. I dont think i could do it in these cold snowy winters tho, i understand the quiet man of the family that used to live in society with abunch of lost people fending for nothing but money to eat, sleep and survive in a concrete souless world. Blessings to all our ancestors that lived like this since the beginning of time up until a 100 years ago. ✌🏾🙏🏾❤️

You're right - I'm sorry that they are pretty much living off the land, but - I think there seems to be no excuse to keep the dogs in these very harsh conditions. In some states, it is illegal to keep a dog chained up in the cold, where it doesn't have a shelter.
That is just pure ignorance, stupidity, or cruelty.
Not watching this foolishness / and or cruelty... ( FYI - I went to the comments and saw your suggestion, then went directly to watch for the outdoor dogs - horrendous. Did not watch the rest.)

The only differences are that I have electricity from the grid, and live only 20 kms from the nearest village and have internet. Last winter it was -32 Celsius at night at this time, and by February there was 108 cm of snow on the ground. This winter is so far been so warm and snowless, barely freezing at night. I sold my snow mobile and snow blower back in November (haha).

27.00 to 27.11, it says, Quote:".......Nastasia confided that what fascinates her more than anything else in Ivan and Daria's decision to return to life in the forest, is that their choice might be just reawakening the roots of a culture, they nearly lost." All I can see, (and one doesn't need special 'aura reading skills' to see that), is that Daria, her children, and the cousins have a really tough life. I don't know which kind of Anthropology, Nastasia is here pursuing, but it feels like a void that she compensates with pseudo-philosophy to satisfy some empty intellectual theories.
The lives of people like Daria must be looked at from many angles, but the main point here is that survival just takes its toll. I do not know which other options they have, but this would be a point to explore and by doing so, physically and psychologically helping where help is needed. Does Nastasia know how tough the Russian military is? Clearly, Ivan opted out and then headed back to the forest. But why? The questions, he is being asked, are meaningless. All I see is his sad face. Why? Because he does not have many other options. So what about exploring new options for this family rather than 'using' them for some academic research under the pretense of introducing the little daughter.
As I said, I do not know anything about these tribes, families, their history, or the options they have. This is something that could have been explored in such a documentary rather than exploiting the harshness of their lives and battle for survival. They know, the film crew and Nastasia will leave, whilst they are left fighting. It is ridiculous to mystify such struggle by this pseudo-ideologistic phrase of 'reawakening the roots of a culture they nearly lost".

Is it that harsh though? When it is cold the air has a higher density of oxygen. There is little chance of getting the flu, or Covid, or a bad cold in the remote forest. The caribou meat is clean, does not need to be cooked, there are fresh plentiful rainbow trout. The only really tough aspect are the long nights from November to February. I live in the same latitude in the Monashee Mountains, have to keep a fire going to heat the home, though I am connected to the power grid. Last year at this time it was -32 Celsius here during the night. I spent 30 years employed as a professional forester, actually it was longer when all other jobs outdoors are included. I am fortunate, I hated living in a large city, the daily routine, noise, crime, traffic got to me. The most oppressive situation now are the hot dry days from June to September when it reaches temperatures of up to 49.6 C as it did nearby at Lytton, BC, in June 21, 2021. I have multiple science degrees, a large library, though I have read all my anthropology texts, and live on the edge of two large provincial parks. It is much easier to work and breath when it is - 20 C, providing there is not too much wind. This winter here, it is barely freezing, El Nino, maritime amplification.

Fascinating….. thank you for uploading. Is this their summer? I did not pick up on who the father of the baby is. How do they get gas if they are 100 km away from even the preserve gate?
