Love it.....especially with the external speaker. 😎😎 I repaired a friend's IC-781 some years ago and used it for a few weeks before he took it back. Great rig.....very full up inside. I fitted a Sherwood fan kit to the rear panel to cool the PSU a bit. Thanks for showing that IC-780.

    Hi Brenton,
Yes looks like my 780. Mine also has a scratchy pre amp switch. Can’t blame it for its age….
Mine is also absolutely mint with a Sherwood fan kit. Recently I have replaced the fan for a modern silent computer fan on the Sherwood kit.
I noticed you could not make much sense with the power out on carrier modes I noticed that your drive control was turned too far down. It needs to be at least half way at 12 o’clock .
The first 781’s came to Australia around late 1989. This was my dream radio back then but out of reach financially for me so I bought one about 25 years after they came out.
Yes they will do over 200 watts and it has an bullet proof tuner.
I have my 780 hooked up to a mint IC 2KL amplifier for the complete 780 station
I have all the boxes manuals including the rare original service manual too… you can tell I love this radio eh??
My opinion is all things equal it’s the best HF radio ICOM ever made….
ARA did a couple of reviews on this back in 1989 and 1990 too, I still have those magazines too…
    I’m pretty much an 780 aficionado I reckon….
Thanks for showing us this great old radio, all good analog goodness😊😊

Not a big Icom fan (I did use a IC-756 for a few years and still have it as a backup) but any radio that relies more on knobs than menus catches my attention. (I do like the auto tuner on the 756, quick and had quite a large matching range.) Looks like a great old radio still doing the job well.

    Great radios

I have 2 of them, IC-780 JP. The difference between 780 and 781 is that 780 has got 100Watts TX output, 28MHz is 50W, AM-40W, FM-50W. Radio you have probably had a TX up mods done.
