Both radios are market disruptors (and I'm not traditionally an Icom fan), but at opposite ends of the spectrum. Both are good value given the feature set. Both are going to push other vendors to innovate and provide better price performance. FTW!
My favourite analogy is one is a Lexus, and one is a Toyota. And my favourite bit of advice to go along with that analogy is that there is no point owning a Lexus without a nice garage for it ;)
Was shocked at the performance on my little active loop from my last radio(only listen). Incredible reception that was unable to get in the last two years with my older radio.

I am glad I saw your videos of the icom 7610, I was planning to buy one just in the store but as used, 2 years old with 3 months warranty ... I am now very much in doubt. I now also have the IC 7300 and I thought I would improve with the ic 7610. Thanks for the information, also from the screen that it can burn in, other video, should not think about it.
I have them both. All valid points for sure. But for anyone on the fence actually trying to decide between the two.. remember, a video explaining all the advantages the 7610 has over the 7300 would take a lot longer than this one. Just compare the rear panels for a partial summary. -AD5VM

I have a 3 year old TS-590SG that I love, but am thinking about a TS-890S or a 7610 in 2019. About a month ago, I decided I wanted to play with a 7300 and I'm quite impressed. Both my current rigs are a plenty, to meet my dx'ing and contesting needs, so if I do upgrade, it will be more out of curiosity, than anything else. If I don't decide to upgrade, both the 7300 and 590SG are staying. They're that good!

Excellent points, thanks! I think that in the world of QRO radios, the 7300 has been a clear game-changer. A bit like the Elecraft KX3 (and maybe now the Xiegu 5105) in the QRP world. I don't think there are many other radios that are as much value for the money.

That said, it will be sold in the future now that the IC-7610 has graced the shack, but we will most likely kick ourselves later!

I would still buy the IC 7610 because it has a 2 antenna ports and a separate port for RX antenna great flexibility
At 2022 prices, you can buy two 7300's for $1000 less than a single 7610.

I can't get the FLDIGI audio to get into the 7610, any ideas? I have the USB codec from the 7610 selected in the FLDIGI. but can't get it to trip the vox, I manually key the 7610, and I don't even see the audio from the computer, I must have something wrong.
Can you do a review of the Yaesu FT-2DR? I'm trying to decide what HT to get next. I'm in between the FT-2DR and the Kenwood D74... Keep up the good content. 73!
We are certainly planning on it! Personally, I feel the FT-70DR is the way to go if you want to try out Yaesu C4FM, System Fusion & Wires-X cheaply. It actually has better audio and is my go to radio! Plus, I didn't need to read the manual to be able to program it! 73, Jarrad VK3BL
I love the curved meters on the 7610 and it would have be nice to have this option on the 7300.

Hi Jad, I tell you what it took me a year to finally go out and buy my 7300, for me the size was an issue, the fact that they was everywhere, I did,nt want one just because they are popular, I have to know in my own mind its the thing for me.
Anyway I was lucky enough to have the use of one over the christmas holidays, It didnt take to long to realise that it was the one to go for, what ever negatives you might have the posotives overwhelm them. keep up with the vids I do enjoy them, 73 Steve G0OGS
Dear Steve, thanks for sending through the picture of your PR-780 - it looks beautiful! I'm not sure if I have had a chance to respond or not but it sure looks nice! You're right; my main motivation behind wanting the IC-7610 was to finally own a 'bigger radio'.
I had been holding of for ages as after I got my IC-7300 I didn't even feel the need to drool over higher end rigs it was so good.
The IC-7610 definitely has a few luxuries on top, but it doesn't set the value bar like the IC-7300 does. I'm almost reluctant to sell my IC-7300 as it will be a classic radio, I'm sure of it!

The quality of the receiver and filtering is what makes a radio. The feel of the knobs, the type of paint used on the cabinet and the placement of the notch filter have nothing to do with the receiver and filtering. I love my 7300 but it lacks some features found on the 7610. And to me, those are important features. Granted, the 7300 is quite adequate most of the time but not in some circumstances which are ignored in this video.

Hi Jarrad, I like your you tubes. I like to add a comment. I always been a Kenwood user..I recently purchased a Kenwood TS890 .Using the 890 for 2 months I sold the radio. I felt it has a lot of old techknowlgy so I sold it..I went back to my older kenwood 870.. Then I hear all of the hipe on the Uc 7300.. So I too a chance to purchase the 7300. SURPRISE ! The 7300 is smaller radio BUT if gives a nlot of useful features..THe Scope are good and the radio is very stable. OK Now the icom 7300 blows away the Kenwood TS890... Im still a Kenwood Guy. But the 7300 is my daily user..A outboard speaker helps..or headphones by Sony-7506.. Best bang for the Dollar is Icoms 7300 by far. even over the 7610...you got it right I agree. w2ot/marty

The IP+ function on the 7300 improves the selectivity in a pileup, and on CW the notch works well too. I have two IC-7300s and find the pair easy to use, can use different antennas, run in diversity receive mode using a simple cable between the radio control ports with an on/off switch, and control both radios from the USB port for remote operation with a single IP address to the server computer running ICOM REMOTE.
I personally think my two IC-7300s as a pair are far better than the IC-7610 and I have money to spare for the RC-28 remote encoder, and auto-tuners, etc.
It sounds like you have quite the versatile setup there! I believe there is a group of operators who would be better off with 2x 7300s, especially if they are willing to put the effort into setting them up to nicely play together. That said, for a bunch of other operators, having all the 'hard work' done for you is worth the extra money. One thing is for sure though, I miss the build quality and 'notch button' of the IC-7300! 73, Jarrad VK3BL

The IC-7300 is truly a remarkable radio. To use a term that has been used loosely by other manufacturers in the past, this IC-7300 really is a game changer. When something comes out that is really good, boxing well above its weight, I buy two of the items. This is true of the IC-7300 - I bought one from the first batch released (I think it was March 2016). I was so impressed by it that I bought a second one in August of that year. I still have both radios and intend to keep them. I was so impressed, that when the IC-7610 came out, I wanted one of those. However, the screen burn in, and loss of the deep black background to more of a milky black has stopped me from buying it. It seems they have still not resolved that issue. If I lived in the USA I probably would have taken my chances, but I live in Kenya, East Africa. To send a rig back to the USA or UK would be prohibitive in cost. I fully agree about the shiny / glossy black on the IC-7610 - it looks like a cheap finish to me. I FAR prefer a matt finish

Yea, I agree, I paid around a thousand dollars for mine after rebates and specials last year and never looked back.. It also came with a nice Heil mic too.

@@RateMyRadioI’m a Diehard ICOM MAN but I would never consider a 7300.I need at least two antenna ports so I went with the 7610.I look at the 7300 and I see a Toy that could have been so much more.If you are going to make a radio for HF/6 meters then put an antenna connecting for both.I would buy another 7600 before I’d ever waste my money on a 7300.I don’t see what the big deal is with the 7300 when it’s just a starter radio?
Plus you can get the if tap board and hook up an sdr without loosing your radio

Glad to hear we’re not alone. Whenever I hear OMs on a net complain of a LID or Jammer I wonder where their Auto Notch button is! :)
Some of us are VERY TACTILE and, although I don't regularly "feel" the enclosures of my gear, I'm quite put off by flimsy controls. Firm, smooth, weighted controls can be a delight to manipulate-is that much to ask?
Others are not so tactile and that's o.k.

I was thinking of buying the 7610 as a birthday present for myself when I turned 60 years 'young' last September, but the radio was not available then. It's /still/ not available in Europe and even if it was, I'm having second thoughts about the purchase now.
Guess I'll just stick with my 7300.
One thing I like in 7610 over the 7300 is the lovely anlaog style meter. That just looks so cool!
But instead of shelling out a big pile of Euros ( if the thing ever comes available here ) I can just create a computer program displaying an analog meter on PC., HI!

Dear Kari, the IC-7610 has a lot of lovely additional features - the opposite video would be something like 10-20 things the IC-7610 does BETTER.
The point I'm really trying to get across is that newer hams should work on other aspects of their shack first; that the IC-7300 is a very competitive and capable rig, and exceedingly good value.
If you've got your shack to a level you're happy with, I can't imagine you'd regret getting the IC-7610 so long as you don't have to stretch finances too far. The IC-7300 should still make good money second hand, so that will offset the cost.
The other thing is, if you can wait, I am pretty confident prices will drop pretty quickly once all of us 'must haves' have put up the big dollars.

I know the 7610 is a fine rig. I believe I've seen every YT video there is featuring 7610 and I have also downloaded the manual & stuff.
Time will tell if one of these boxes will find it's way to my schak.

Is it worth upgrading to a 7300 from my proIII?
All good points, there has been talk about having two 7300's instead of a 7610. I happen to love the IC-7300. What I got rid of are two flex radios, and the IC-7600, and I did like the Flex, but I don't miss all the computer drivers and misc software I needed to make everything outside the radio to work with it. The IC7600 was a great radio, and I had a IC-756 Pro II before that. So, my feeling about the IC-7300 is based on a lot of other great radios. I don't miss much of what I had, the 7300 is great in so many ways.
We have a real soft spot for the IC-7300 too Joseph; it is a little sweetheart and have never heard of a new owner being disappointed in any way whatsoever.
I have two IC-7300s, so does a friend and we operate them remotely across the country with RS-BA1. Both appear in the RADIO LIST on the ICOM Remote so I can use ANY of the radios at any time. The built-in LAN port on the 7610 and some other ICOM radios is fine, but it's just a single IP address. Running ICOM Remote on a laptop with USB 3.0 hub, and multiple radios is easy, and it works perfectly. Even the 7610 has a functional USB port that allow it to be on the same SERVER as another ICOM radio with USB CI-V control.
are the knobs on the 7300 also buttons? I know the 7610 is a knob as well as a push button which I think may be why its a little looser.???
Its been a while now Mike but I don't believe they are buttons, and I agree that is probably why they feel a little looser. That said, the knobs on my Yaesu FT-8800 and FT-8900 mobiles always felt tight despite being dual purpose buttons too. 73, Jarrad VK3BL
I'm along time 756pro3 user but am finding my self in the market for a new radio. I like the 7300 but not sure I can get used to the size and the lack of antenna ports and a dedicated rx antenna port. Anyone come from a similar situation with upgrading from a pro3?

I presently have a 7300 on loan from a friend while i decide which hf set is for me, its very difficult to ditch it for the money, it does take some beating really and the ones that possibly do are three times the cost. I can see you have a iMac like myself and now i use RUMlogNG which when connected to the 7300 via a usb is a great feature. Not only do you have a log book but you also have a rig control and the ability to route your audio and recorded it so you can store or play back over the air, this opens up more of the 7300 just fine, without being to complicated or messy, so what a great enhancment to the radio especially if your a mac user and suffer from the fact that Ham software is mainly windows based, yes i know you can run windows on a mac but thats like putting water into whiskey. The 7300 is great but would be nice to have the option of same style analogue signal meters on it that the 7610 has. It is very possible to do by Icom on a firmware update.
CI-V command 1502 "read the S-meter" could easily be added to a WinAPP to show an analog S-Meter in RS-BA1 or any other program controlling the radio from a computer.
I have no interest in getting a 7610 after buying the 7300. In fact, I am considering selling my Flex gear. The 7300 is that good.
The IC-7300 really is that good :). Unless you have a well setup shack and the best antennas possible at your QTH, we recommend the IC-7300. There are of course exceptions, but the IC-7300 is more than enough radio for almost anyone!

You cannot do manual RTTY or PSK31 on the IC-7300 without a computer like you can on the IC-7610.
Hi Jarrad, I have both the 7300 and the 7610. You mentioned on the 7610 there's no function, that because most of those functions are down the left side of the touch screen. I do miss having the SWR checking function but being an SDR radio, it could be added later in a firmware update. There are a lot more functions on the 7610 such as twin transceivers and a video output. Don't get me wrong, I love my 7300 and will never part with it but that also goes for my 7610. I do find that the 7610 has the edge on the most weakest stations. So I guess the only factor left is the price... you could afford two 7300's which you are getting in one package with better specs.

Dear Roy, I feel completely the same way about you - the 7610 is a significantly better radio, there is just no doubt about it. I especially like the sound of the receiver, which is unparalleled out of the box; it took me 30 minutes of tweaking just to get my ANAN-100D close!
I'll probably follow this video up with something like - 10 reasons you should buy / upgrade to the IC-7610; this particular video was aimed at encouraging those new to the hobby to stick with their IC-7300s until they had the rest of their shack in order :)

For the price, it better have a better sound, but I have better sound from my car stereo system, but my car doesn't do 20 meters.
Do you buy transceivers in order to pat them and assess their value through the one that gives you more incentive, do you check their value through their work on the bands?
We are completely independent of any manufacturer, and pay retail for our transceivers like anyone else :) Jarrad VK3BL is a HF DX Addict and Ham Radio is a huge part of his life, so if a transceiver has a particularly nasty short fall or problem, we assure you we will report it! :)

I don't think Icom will ever release a 'black box' style radio, BUT with the newer firmware and the USB 3.0 connector you CAN use the IC-7610 as if it were a black box SDR. 73, Jarrad VK3BL :)
The IC-7610 and IC-7300 already are SDR rigs, but in a box with traditional knobs. The SDR architecture of these rigs is what allows them to have that real-time and fast (about 25 fps) spectrum display and waterfall, over the entire displayed frequency range

Thats a hard call. It depends whether or not you value a second receiver and bigger box more than a bandscope.
Rate My Radio ,. Well the 7600 has a scope. Which is better on the receive?
That is the subject of much debate amongst the community. I don't have a personal stake in it having never owned a IC-7600, but I will state the scope in the 7600 has nothing at all on the full speed scope of the 7300. For a smaller station I would probably choose the 7300, for a larger station the IC-7600 may be the way to go. Put it like this, if the 7600 is the better radio for you, you would know it already :). Technically speaking, the receiver in the IC-7300 with IP+ enabled offers approximately 20dB more dynamic range.

Totally agree. The 7300 is more refined in the " fit and finish " and built better than the 7610 IMHO. The screen looks more vibrant and has a nice matte finish and not plagued by screen quality issues as the 7610 is / was. I was ready to buy a brand new 7610 about four years ago, sat down with a display unit at the local ham radio store and was turned off by this, and turned off by the fact that they deepened the access to the Notch functions which I use a lot. The 7300 had it right on the front panel...nice !
I completely changed my mind and bought a Kenwood TS-890. Love it ! The Icom IC-705 and the IC-7300 however are a total success story IMHO as I have both and are totally amazed with them and are a lot of fun !

7610 - 16 bit adc, 7300 - 14 bit adc. Dynamic range and sensivity on 7610 will be better.
It is, but the enob isn’t 2dB higher, and the sherwood charts list the IC-R8600 as higher than the 7610 despite its 14bit ADC. I wouldn’t buy just based on 14 vs 16bit. 73, Jarrad VK3BL

Jarrad love your videos on the IC-7610. However I think we should stop comparing the two radios. Everything you said about the IC-7300 was your opinion. I have both radios as well, and I never think about comparing the two because they are built for to different market segments. I agree that for the money the IC-7300 is the BEST value in Ham Radio! The IC-7610 is for a different segment of HAM Radio. Time will tell if it performs as well in it's segment as the IC-7300 does. Keep up the videos, I do enjoy your point of view on this radio.

You make a very valid point - you can't directly compare them, as they are in a different price bracket / market segment.
I don't plan on doing any more comparison videos; the point of this video was mainly to encourage newer hams to spend their money on other parts of their shack, rather than drooling over the latest and greatest.
Experienced Hams like you and I know that the antenna does 90% of the work, and given the bargain price of the IC-7300 I feel there has never been a better time to get into the hobby.
Hopefully, this video will encourage some of the newer hams in our ranks to go with the IC-7300 and put their money into antennas and essential shack items.
Lets face it, the IC-7610 is a Lexus, whilst the IC-7300 is a Toyota; and the average new Ham just wants to get to 100 (DXCC); which even an FT-101E will do for them :)
That said, the next upgrade to my shack will be in the order of $100,000 (acreage in the country for better antennas and lower noise levels), so I could quite easily justify the price of the IC-7610.
PS, we both know if I did the reverse video it would be titled "50 Ways the IC-7610 is BETTER than the IC-7300" :)

Dear Steve, I conducted a poll on FB, and approximately 80% of people (45 to 9) feel there is value in comparing between market segments.
A lot of people are 'value driven' in their purchases, and this is the main benefit to comparing between the different market segments.
Of course you pay more for luxuries, but sometimes its helpful to know when its wise to invest in a luxury.
What do you think?

I have a made in Japan Icom 7000. Its a darn good radio too. If you are looking for a non-SDR Icom you can not go wrong with the IC-7000. They made Ic-7000s in china too.
The IC-7000 is a very popular and reliable radio :). We sold ours only because it was out of warranty and over 10 years old, also we were 10 years older and liked the remote head of the IC-7100 which sits easily on a desk :). 73, Jarrad VK3BL & Ben VK3HBN :)
The 7300 has 70mhz transmit if live in a 70mhz zone.

To me the 7300 is way to small. I am 62 and my eyesight is not very good. I need the bigger screen of the 7610. Otherwise they are both good radios.
I suppose if one had deep pockets, one may wish to purchase a even more expensive rig.
That said, we are all either not willing or unablew to spend close to 3 grand for a radio, after all, this is my hobby, not a profession.
I've had my 7300 almost 2 years and see no need or advantage to buying the 7610; at least not for me.
Will the 7610 pull out signals the 73-00 can't? Doubtful. Will it TX cleaner RF? Doubtful.
I'm sure the 7610 is a great rig; just no benefit to me.

The difference is that I earn my living from photography; ham radio is a hobby only for me.
Again; deep pockets?..go for it. On a budget, the 7300 does everything I want, Is the7300 better in some ways? Maybe; just as the L series lenses might be considered better in (some) situations.
I am agreeing with you, IMO the 7300 IS better in some areas of operation, especially when one factors in the price of the 7300, it's a bargain.

Sorry but the 7610 many times better than the 7300. I think you just need to understand how the radio works.
7610 does have a very good notch setting. Look at the back of the 7610, the connections you have to choose from is very nice.
