Before we visited Johannesburg to shoot a Real Scenes film, we'd heard that Black Coffee was a big star in South Africa. But what we saw eclipsed anything we could have imagined. Nathi Maphumulo is a national icon-an artist who has come to embody the creative and professional potential for black South Africans in a post-apartheid world. For the last ten years, Nathi has been producing and playing house music that drips with soul. His style draws inspiration from the indigenous music of his homeland, blended with a love for classic hooks and songwriting. It's a blueprint that's helped him inspire a generation of South African producers.
All of which makes Nathi an ideal subject for ORIGINS. In order to tell the story of his formative years, we first travelled to Umlazi, a township outside of Durban where he developed a passion for music that would shape the rest of his life. We then spent time in Ngangalizwe, Mthatha, a township where, under the care of his grandmother, Nathi learned some of the harsh realities of rural living. This was also the place where, on the night Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Nathi was involved in an accident that left him without the use of his left hand. When Nathi visited his old high school, the frenzied reaction to his appearance showed just how large his story-one of success in the face of adversity-looms in the mind of young South Africans.

yep is tough when your biggest passion and profession is underground music in a poor country, big up from mexico city, I STILL HAVE FAITH TOO
House in our country is not underground, it's mainstream. As for being from a third world country, I will disagree with you on that one. South Africa is very complex, even to us citizens. We don't label ourselves a third world country, as you are bound to go from one extreme to the other within a kilometer.
INSPIRATIONAL
Great!
The Real Black Coffee. Dankie Son.!!!
Black Coffee - 100 Zulu Warriors (Instrumental) is the 1st track

LoXion Culcha, what will the grass roots bring?
U are Legendary, #RESPECT
Cool dude.
Question??? When hearing the stories of NY, CHICAGO, DETROIT and UK Djs talk about the history of their music and what made them want to Dj they often reference back to other djs ( Larry Leven, Frankie Knuckles, DJ Harvey ECT) Was the south African dance movement built from other Dj's or groups from SA or was it totally built organically in the last few years? Was their a SA Dj putting out house music in 1992 for example.
Basically the guys who operated record shops, clubs and independent dance music labels in the early 90's brought a whole lot of international house music into the country once international sanctions were lifted and with that came the sounds of legendary house musicians like those you have mentioned. They knew about the music but it was hard to get before the 90's. So labels like House Afrika, Foreal House, Soul Candi played a huge role in pushing the music through their record shops and labels and have legendary compilation series in their rosters from the likes of Dj Fresh, Oskido, Vinny Da Vinci, Glen Lewis, Dj Mbuso and a whole lot more. I think the scene really started maturing in the late 90's into the 2000's but the 2010's was when the locally produced house started taking off in a big way, because it was mostly internationally produced house music that dominated the market before then here in SA.
@@ogsmilesthedj7319 That make sense thank you so much for your insight
danki babu coffee

I have FAITH
But I still don't get the private jet and all the millions needed to spread the word :(
Karoly Kiralyfalvi traveling to spread the word is expensive and allows him to give back. Come on, man.
1990, back when the US Dollar cost us R39.41
so not true!

From adversity comes triumph.
I have faith Coffee
Track id? at start
FAITH TOO# DANKIE#
That woman talking to the students gives me the creeps. She talks to them like the kind of person you see years after in the news and you learn that they've been abusing and mistreating children for generations. Other than that, great fucking video.
Why is he using only 1 hand??
Whats wrong with the sub-titles hey
I hope you are also doing something to improve your childhood community. I realized along time ago only we can change things in our community. If you wait for the government you will be disappointed.
#respect
