Sydney is a very large metropolitan area but it is easy and reasonably inexpensive to get around by public transport although it is expensive to use the train stations at Sydney Airport (there is a surcharge applied to just the airport stations). For your future reference (your next visit), all the modes of Sydney’s public transport (trains including both heavy rail and light rail, buses, ferries) use the Opal ticketing/fares system for public transport travel (no cash fares) using either an Opal Card or your contactless credit card. The single ride ticket that you purchased at the airport is basically an Opal card programmed for just one ride - in your case to Circular Quay. A paid-up Opal card will allow you to travel by whichever transport mode(s) that you choose and even allows for short interruptions to a trip. The Opal card can be topped up with money to allow for multiple trips of varying distances to various destinations over multiple days before needing to be topped up again. How many days and the lengths of the trips depends only on how much money you put into the card. Alternatively, you can just use your credit card for each trip instead of getting an Opal card but there are discounts that are available for Opal card use that can make it a slightly cheaper exercise.
I guess that you are not a regular train user, otherwise you might have noticed the many helpful hints that you either walked right past or turned away from, without reading/comprehending. The numbers referred to the station platform numbers and if you had looked above you on the platforms at both the International station and at Central station there were indicator screens showing where the next train to arrive will be stopping or in your case, that the train was terminating. Had you walked a bit further in the suburban platforms concourse towards the Grand Concourse you should have seen a series of screens showing train departures at each of the (numbered) platforms, from which information you could then have used the various maps that you came across to see which way to go. However, I have to admit that it looks like Sydney Transport did throw you a bit of a curve ball by having track work (maintenance) close the City Circle line to Circular Quay on that day. Nevertheless, this was an opportunity to explore the flexibility of Sydney’s public transport system by being able to use the Opal system to continue your trip to Circular Quay by either of the two alternative modes: bus or light rail. At least by using either of those alternatives, while much slower, you had the chance to travel through the Central Business District on the surface, rather than underground.
I look forward to seeing your videos from your next visit here. Please allow plenty of time to see all the attractions.

For sure! Thanks for the information! I really like it when people in the know gives me information about things I get confused about. It was also a bit of an impromptu decision to go out to the Opera house since I have an 8 hour layover, so I did not really do a lot of research haha. I do agree with missing a lot of visual clues though. Unfortunately, that is just me. I do miss a looot of stuff when recording and being new in the place. But hey, all's well that ends well. I was able to get into Circle Quay, thanks to the help I got from locals (was not able to properly record my interactions as I deemed it rude to talk to strangers while recording). I can definitely say I will be coming back as I really really wanted to explore more of Australia!

Oh definitely. I did not record most of it since I feel like it's rude to record while talking to random people (unless theyre ok with it). I find that people there are very friendly and I was able to talk to a lot of people en route to the Opera House

This was so painful to watch.
If you have a normal credit card you can use that on all public transport (it also said that on the screen when you were buying the ticket, but you thought it was talking about the Opal Card).
Trips from the airport include an airport access fee in the cost. That's why it's so pricey. Most people think it's because the airport stations are private, but the extra fee is actually collected by the state government.
Normally the train you were on from the airport will take you to Circular Quay. On weekends there is sometimes maintenance work being done, and parts of some lines may be closed. There were probably signs at the airport station saying so. The 'terminating' announcement the train guard made as you arrived at Central was also probably about that. It probably also would have said where to go to get alternative transport.
You looked at virtually every display in Central, except the ones that tell you which trains are departing from which platforms (and alternatives if some lines are closed). If you are not familiar with to, it can be confusing. Just ask people if you don't know.

Oh yes! I am not used to trains at all. Back when I visited tokyo, I kid you not I was on the underground subway station for almost an hour getting lost haha. No worries though, I did eventually ask someone and people are very friendly there!
Really excited to plan a trip there sometime in the future!

The ticket was expensive due to a surcharge they apply at the airport stations. Long story, hoping they'll get rid of it one day. Fares are usually under $5 to anywhere else.
If you've got a credit card it'd be better to tap that to pay your fare. Couple dollars cheaper.

Not sure what happened with the train terminating. Depending on when this was recorded you might have been unlucky and gotten caught on a trackwork day where the city circle was closed for maintenance. Or the train was "terminating" at central and then continuing onto the city circle, and you just misunderstood. Best bet is to look at the information screens at your platform, it'll tell you where the train is stopping.

Oh yes, there were so many platforms closed during the time I was there. The people there are very friendly though and I was able to basically ask around directions until I got to the Opera house
