I recently made postage stamp sized fake books of the original Percy Jackson covers out of an old cereal box and stuck them in a razor blade package I took from my dad as a little tiny book rack for my wall

I've actually been doing this since last spring. I have a bunch of cheesy signage, and I do decoupage with images that go with my decor. I'm not the most confident painter. These signs make the best canvases! Also if you paint them and flip them around, they make cute cubby shelves. Use them for miniature dioramas, and shadow boxes. I loved that you used The Stand image. I'm a huge Stephen King fan. ❤

@1:25 those painted wooden buildings! I have a collection of these ( a dozen or so) bequeathed to me from my grandparents who sadly passed away a few years ago. I always admired them and it wasn’t until this year I displayed them in my home only to realize that they all have a lounging black cat painted somewhere on the building (hence the title series; the Cat’s Meow) ❤😸
I absolutely adore the cover art from the Ballantine Books 1965 edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. No way could I ever replicate it. So unhinged.

This is 100% something I've been doing for a couple of years now. It's a great canvas for painting on, and basically creates its own "frame" with the depth and weight of the wooden sides.
The segment where you walk to the coffee shop is such an 80s indie movie opening with the music ❤❤❤❤❤

If I made a fake book cover, the first choice that springs to mind is "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. Or one of the old covers from the Wrinkle in Time series would be good.
I have bought some cruddy plaques to remake...well, not from the thrift store, but they were cheap. I like take seashells that I collect on vacation and glue them on, making geometric designs or sort of like the old sailor's valentines. The issue is they can start looking cheesy really fast, so I have to control myself!!
The Dark is Rising is one of my absolute favorites. You could do some amazing stuff-- all the weird 70s pagan-y drawings in the original! SIGH!

Love the notebook sketches Kathleen! I'm a long-time life drawer using brush and ink and love quick gestural sketches. It's really great to see a content creator encourage doing, making and enjoying over just consumption and have a few projects on the go. At the moment I'm rehabilitating a wallet that's all torn and pilled with markers, fabric glue and maybe even some patches. Also totally understand the dog-wanting-to-go-out-all-the-time-senario. My dog doesn't like it when it rains but has to go outside multiple times and stand miserably in the rain. Drives my husband up the wall. Lol.
I love seeing your freeform style of illustration and painting. It's effortless and fun, and you seem well able to push yourself past any brainstorms or lack of a plan. To get started, GET STARTED! I'm a very basic watercolor painter. It's my supposition that a painting goes from not quite finished, take one more stroke, and then it's way too much. That's why I have several paintings that look a bit spare. Watercolor is my favorite because of its immediacy and the joy of the colors. It's been years since I painted, but this is the year to dabble again. Thanks for the inspiration! PS - I was inspired and used an image of a young woman with her baby for my last painting. Her skin was golden and seemed to glow. She held her baby so tenderly, but was clearly marching off for important tasks. I was enamored of how I captured her golden glow skin. It's one stroke short, but I like it. I was dismayed, though, to read that she's a cholera victim in Guinea Bissau.

This reminded me of a decor idea I'd had to take the pages of a really artsy children's book I snagged from the library where I worked (it was falling apart) and frame my favorite pages, then hang them on the wall. Since they're all the same size I was thinking I'd have to buy new frames but it occurs to me that I can thrift some frames and make them work somehow. Maybe modpodge or jesso the same type of wall hangings you bought and paste the page onto that. Hmmm....
We also have an emotional support skeleton. He sits in our rocking chair and holds our laundry basket. 😅

I love your art style! Really loving the art content in general, and upcycling what would most definitely be destined for the landfill. They turned out great! If I was to paint a fake book I would do a Jane Austen set and maybe paint a scene from the movie version of each book on the cover? Idk lol.

I buy the ugly signs and glue artist prints onto them. I find a sign that's just barely smaller than the print and use a glue stick (doesn't buckle the paper). Then I cut off the excess paper. It looks simpler than framing it. I have also used wallpaper or pretty magazine pictures to wrap the signs entirely so the design is on the sides as well.

The Dark Tower is one of my favorite book series ever, the way it ties all together and with a bunch of his other books, just... ugh so good! I "stole" the series from my brother and ended up reading through it twice in high school before The Wind Through the Keyhole was released and absolutely jumped to buy it when I had the chance

The gunslinger series is my favorite!!! I read them like almost 10 years ago and I’m now currently listening to them on audiobook. If you haven’t listened to them, I highly recommend it. Beautiful narrating.

I love this idea! I went through a post-breakup phase a few years ago where I did my best to reproduce Moby Dick illustrations by Rockwell Kent in acrylic in my sketchbook: now I want to try it on a Life is Better at the Lake House sign!
The fashion lady turned out great! One tip for getting a looser look is to hold the brush further back on the handle. Forces a bit of wobble.

I’d definitely want to replicate some old sci fi and fantasy covers from the 60’s.
Watercolor is my fav medium, and I've been thinking of investing in some watercolor ground for this purpose. Btw, I rewatched Night at the Thrift Store with my 13 yo niece, and she loved it as much as I did. She bought a giant skelly with her own money last fall, so it was an extra delightful romp for her to watch your video.
I love the paint brush pup, just sitting next to your project. She's got no idea what is happening, but she's happy to help.
I've recently finished Leopoldo Gout's book "Pinata" and I recommend it to Stephen King fans. Excellent horror/thriller from a Mexican indigenous author. It's a knock out.

My favourite Stephen King book is "The girl who loved Tom Gordon". It's the first Stephen King book I read when I was a teenager and I read it many times since.
I highly recommend the CZcams channel The Average Artist, Kathleen! Not only is she a super cool artist that makes her own comic books (so cool) but she has a series where she repaints book covers - like actually paints on the covers of books and redesigns/makes a new cover for the book! I think you’d love it as much as I do!

Omg! I recognized The Owl and The Pussycat IMMEDIATELY! It’s an actual store in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada! I used to live around the corner from it! It’s a toy shop and is a truly iconic storefront. 😂

I am not really a fan of Steven King but my husband says the Stand is his favorite.
For people who may not be painters, another fun idea with the book cover is to make a collage based off your favorite book as your own spin of the cover, just be sure to use a good quality top coat on top of it so it stays down afterwards! :D I might do one of my favorite books Challenger Deep, but it wouldn't be as interesting to just recreate the cover. So perhaps next time I go to the thrift store I'll use more of the scrapbooking materials I own

Gunslinger DarkTower…I have them in Plume editions. My first husband and I would comb the used bookstore after each came out so we read them a little behind…usually as the next came out. When we divorced I got them. I went to reread a few years ago, when my oldest was old enough and found that one didn’t make it into my collection! I can’t remember if I replaced it or not. I can see their spines from where I sit. 🌈🌈🦋🦋
