Okay, this came on my homepage and I assumed it was going viral. Apparently it isn't. So I'm gonna write some shit I assume the creator is gonna read. So I thought I loved TV on the Radio. But I don't think I did. Or at least not at the same level Poster Shot does. I've talked them up to my friends, played their music at parties, but still I'm bereft. As a white boy from England, the experience of a black man from the USA isn't something I instinctively would register, so hearing this interpretation turned their early work into something very new for me which I appreciate immensely. And I only found them a little later when Wolf Like Me was used in a British TV show but it got me to listen to their back catalogue. But fuck me year after year do I hope they'll play at download festival. Thank you for making this and I've encouraged all my rock friends to watch it
I am a "black alternative musician", to put it into perspective, and yes TVOR was and is impactful just on the merits of the music itself. I MET Tunde here in Atlanta when they performed at what was called The Echo Lounge...he simply came up to the bar after the show and we talked. It was awesome. It's weird for me that I haven't really followed them that much...my favorite songs are "Dreams" and "Staring At The Sun", but there are more. Thanks for this!
I heard their EP young liars in a little juke box at our local bar/music venue. Blind was playing and I immediately knew this band was special. Usually if you hear something unique from a specific area, then usually there is a great scene building up. So then I went down this Brooklyn alternative rabbit hole, I found santigold and Apollo heights. I can’t seem to find the Apollo heights album online and I don’t even know if they even still play together. I still have their album on my old iPod it’s called everlasting gobstopper find the whole album and you will be in for a treat if you love TV on the radio like I do.
I was working at a record store when Young Liars came out, one of the guys put on the cd and it was a revelation the arrangements and harmonies blew us away, we listened to it three times that day. Not back to back mind you there was a ton of the Strokes and Interpol that needed playing, but it altered something in us that day, it sounded like something special was happening. When three of my friends came to pick me up from work to play d&d one paused and looked at the poster and said that could be us. The awe in his voice sounded naieve and earnest in a way none us were comfortable with being. But we were three nerdy thriftstore attire wearing radiohead listening to nappy afro having black kids in art school, "that could be us" no one disagreed

As a white dude from Austin I discovered Tv on the Radio from their live version of Dreams with Nine Inch Nails (2006) I knew they were something special. I checked out a few more tracks and kind of dropped off… until Seeds dropped. What a banger of an album front to back too to bottom Seeds is a master piece. Since then I’ve grabbed every album on vinyl, dug up digital versions of Ok Calculator, the single Wallz, and their collection of B-sides and covers. Love seeing a video that highlights how amazing this band truly is. Great job sir!
Heard "Wolf Like Me" on MTV in high school, went out, bought Return to Cookie Mountain, hit play, and proceeded to have my mind blown by "To Be A Lover". This band is so incredible, and I'm excited for the possibility of new music from them soon with their recent announcement of new shows and a reissue of the debut album with unreleased tracks.
The first time I heard Young Liars was live at one of their shows, and I couldn't believe I hadn't heard it ( I guess I wasn't that familiar with their back catalog at the time) , and it completely blew me away. Bought all their albums/eps the next day.
Thank you for bringing more attention to one of my favorite bands. I was in the gym, sometime in 2005 or so, when "Wolf Like Me" came on the in-house music video channel. I stopped everything just so I could figure out who these guys were. Still loving them almost 20 years later.

This band was and in many ways still is a huge influence on how I have made my art and lived my life. A truly unique and inspiring group of creative individuals. “Love Dog” made me cry. So glad u made this video! Respect! Side note a very young kip is in a documentary about black punk rockers as well

FINALLY tvotr gets a whole video to themselves true geniuses. i really hope we’ll be blessed with another release soon. i always interpreted “the wrong way” as a police brutality scene. “teaching folks the score” (in my opinion) translates to a cop abusing his authority and taking advantage of systemic racism. kyp’s line in “crying” gives off vibes of: “money is the focal point of our culture, it leads to gluttony past the point of no return. we become dependent on wealth, and those who are wealthy, so we can’t make a name for ourselves.”
Dude I'll be real, I've shown this to everyone who I can convince to sit in a room with me for long enough to hear it out, even my mates who don't like rock think this documentary is great, the same way Top Gear appeals to people who don't like cars, it's just really compelling, being a fan of the music only adds to what's already great

Dope vid, thanks! I think i saw a blurb on them in Rollingstone magazine, and downloaded some all i could find on napster song by song, it was a mix of ok calculator and desperate youth.... and it had me hooked. i like their first two albums best, the rawness of it all stands apart for me.

TVOTR is one of the most nostalgic bands for me. It was so foundational to my taste in music and my ability to like things that were unpolished and raw. I still have a huge place in my heart for the band, and your perspective on what it meant to you was really interesting to hear. Thanks for making this video. I think CM is my favorite full album but there is something about desperate youth, and particularly the EP version of staring at the sun that made me have the strongest connection to them. While we’re on the subject: do any fans here know why there’s no streamable version of dry drunk Emperor anywhere?
I caught up with the release of 9 Types of Light which absolutely was life-changing 10/10. My husband and I went on a road trip right after it's release and we had to listen to it three times a day or else we would go nuts😂 there was a wind turbine area on the highway in lower Minnesota where the music went with the beat of passing the wind turbines and power lines for miles. Unforgettable imagery. They became one of my favorite bands of all time and I await any new music because everything I've heard of theirs is amazing. My repetition is this!

my question is WHEREtf is TVotR? Been missing these guys. They have an amazing catalog. Definitely do not skip their EPs, New Health Rock & Young Liars have incredible stuff. Their b-sides are typically great too (so album bonus tracks and singles like Province are worth hearing), and they even got some fantastic ppl for remixes like El-P, Jneiro Jarel, & Prefuse 73. I dont consider Nine Types of Light any kind of disappointment. I would pick songs out but it's pretty much good end to end; Keep Your Heart has particular relevance for me. I enjoy it a bit more than Seeds which felt like the more commercial record, but isnt bad by any means either. The discography at that stage feels like a pretty clear trajectory for a band that's been together awhile, getting older, settled into a comfortable groove and is getting a bit less experimental, which might be part of why they hit the brakes since they were typically a very freewheeling, genre-bending act and maybe werent feeling the spark?

Thanks for such an in depth analysis of one of the all time greats that no one has ever heard of. I don’t remember my ah ha moment of discovery, must of heard them on the radio, or perhaps Letterman? I do remember getting the CD one afternoon, and that night turning my friends on Wolf Like Me, as we drove through downtown Portland OR, blasting the volume, with our heads hanging out the windows, watching for a literal full moon between the tops of the buildings, as we raced to another bar before closing! Lucky enough to see them live in of all places Salt Lake City. Still one of my all time favorite shows.
the algo blessed me with this doc and man i'm pumped to listen to them all day now. wolf like me was big on the radio when i was in high school and was big into diy and k recs stuff so that single stood out as more than a banger from the nu-rock from ny (tho it is that too.) it was when i heard i was a lover was when i knew i was hooked. thanks for putting this out there for us and reigniting my love of these dudes :)
No lyric breakdown for the meaning behind 'Robots'? I love subtly mentioning it with no context. Ambulance is another track that has stuck with me for years in addition to the ones highlighted in the video.
Thank for going thru some of their lyrics... When u really get your teeth into what is being said, sung & written down for us to find in their art. That's when the light shines in on ya like a metaphor... They are well wise to the ways of metaphysical understandings & knowledge. So are NIN & Radiohead too. I've learnt as much of it myself, by studying the work of these artists as well as pursuing study to it myself along the way.
Man it’s such an experience when you listen to the band. I discovered them on a playlist of a video game and I felt in love first listen. Their music has left me an imprint just of how unconventional they are. And back as younger guy who was just starting life, they inspired me to be just as unconventional. TOTR will always be that band for me! This vid just made me crave and appreciate the band even more!
Tv on the Radio has an awesome vibe. Loved that they included Karen Gillian in one music video as a Doctor Who fan and their accapella cover of the pixies Mr. Grieves as a big Pixies fan. When I was struggling to quitting smoking at 35 I read that Gerard Smith died of lung cancer at 36. That he was found as a subway musician by Tundre. Its devestating knowing he lived a stressful life looking to cigarettes to keep away the stess and hunger likely. Then he was found to travel the world. People said that Gerard was a fan of everyone kinda like a quiet beatle chillness and everyone became of his when they heard him play. He had a young son and had a part in "the lottery". I would tell myself a story to quit smoking. I struggled with breathing and landed in the hospial twice. My dad had lung cancer. Gerard smith lost his life to cancer when his life was on path with purpose to his son and in his passion. Even as its hard and still holding on to smoking for habit to keep away the stress and hunger... I should make the choice now and follow through on quitting before the damage comes in soo deep that there is no turning back.

I saw them for the first time in sxsw. I saw a bunch of black dudes wearing jerseys get on stage then absolutely blow me away with such a grippingly unique sound. They played ambulance and staring at the sun. To this day they are one of my favorite bands and that was one of my favorite live music experiences.
I 100% agree with your interpretation of The Wrong Way. And your input on the Magical Negro character trope was new to me but I do believe that seals the deal with what TVOTR wanted to say. (James Earl Jones’ characters in Field of Dreams AND Sandlot come to mind when thinking of the characters for me). I guess I always thought it talked about how black people are represented in Hollywood but I never knew there was a whole BOOK about this level of typecasting. It’s like a wake up moment, then a rationalization of values “I won’t cast pearls to swing, no I won’t march peacefully. No negro politician is stirring inside me…but an angry heartbeat” And yeah the whole tone is eerie and sinister, and the groove and whole feel of the songs sounds like fast marching of several pairs of feet. And the last line “your guns are pointed the wrong way” sounds like a call go action for people to come together and fight the powers up top, instead of looking sideways at your neighbors.
The masters of the metaphysical, are back & there magical & musical... There has been no other act as lyrically wise & musically artful as a fusion than tvotr imo.

My dad, oh my dad. Racist, bigoted Mexican American. Yeah, I know. How can a Mexican American be a bigot, you may ask? Well, I was nine years old when I realized he was a bigot. You're not even a white man, I thought. He was a U'SAF Airman for all his life and I think he had something to prove. Anyway, I grew to understand race differences and embrace them. I discovered "black" music and I love it. My dad hated it. I didn't care. So, TV On The Radio simply fits in with my life, my love of music and I really didn't give a crap what my dad thought. Still, after all these years (I'm sixty five now}, I gravitate towards the music that moves my soul. And that's TV On The Radio.
Go back and listen to Happy Idiot through the lens of "toxic masculinity." Not the angry, accusatory slur that that phrase has become in social media, but the basis of where it started as a term of art in psychology. Yeah, the imagery is fairly clear and overt, but the message underneath is just fuqing heartbreaking to hear from one guy to another. The way I put it to guys is that "choosing not to feel" is like putting your feelings on a credit card. Sure. You don't have to pay it now, but you'll have to pay it later and with interest. Happy Idiot it a song that I PRAISE for being overt and not so subtle. It's yanking off the bandaid of what we all do, but we don't talk about. Can't talk about the wound if it's always covered up, obfuscated, layered under layers under layers.
I wish I could drunkenly whatsapp voice you about how much these guys mattered to me (listening from LatAm) and how I came to see (american) black culture. Maybe sometime.
I would say in the early 2ks music def was a melting pot, this is the time when neptunes/nerd got popping they were an example of blending music genres. This was happening in the late 90s but ti was more underground

Picked up young liars in the early aughts because it was on touch and go. One of the best surprises ever.

Thanks for such an in depth analysis of one of the all time greats that no one has ever heard of. I don’t remember my ah ha moment of discovery, must of heard them on the radio, or perhaps Letterman? I do remember getting the CD one afternoon, and that night turning my friends on Wolf Like Me, as we drove through downtown Portland OR, blasting the volume, with our heads hanging out the windows, watching for a literal full moon between the tops of the buildings, as we raced to another bar before closing! Lucky enough to see them live in of all places Salt Lake City. Still one of my all time favorite shows.
It’s been almost 10 years since Seeds came out. I pray to god they release new music again soon.

the algo blessed me with this doc and man i'm pumped to listen to them all day now. wolf like me was big on the radio when i was in high school and was big into diy and k recs stuff so that single stood out as more than a banger from the nu-rock from ny (tho it is that too.) it was when i heard i was a lover was when i knew i was hooked. thanks for putting this out there for us and reigniting my love of these dudes :)

Thank for going thru some of their lyrics... When u really get your teeth into what is being said, sung & written down for us to find in their art. That's when the light shines in on ya like a metaphor... They are well wise to the ways of metaphysical understandings & knowledge. So are NIN & Radiohead too. I've learnt as much of it myself, by studying the work of these artists as well as pursuing study to it myself along the way.
Man it’s such an experience when you listen to the band. I discovered them on a playlist of a video game and I felt in love first listen. Their music has left me an imprint just of how unconventional they are. And back as younger guy who was just starting life, they inspired me to be just as unconventional. TOTR will always be that band for me! This vid just made me crave and appreciate the band even more!

Tv on the Radio has an awesome vibe. Loved that they included Karen Gillian in one music video as a Doctor Who fan and their accapella cover of the pixies Mr. Grieves as a big Pixies fan.
When I was struggling to quitting smoking at 35 I read that Gerard Smith died of lung cancer at 36. That he was found as a subway musician by Tundre. Its devestating knowing he lived a stressful life looking to cigarettes to keep away the stess and hunger likely. Then he was found to travel the world.
People said that Gerard was a fan of everyone kinda like a quiet beatle chillness and everyone became of his when they heard him play. He had a young son and had a part in "the lottery".
I would tell myself a story to quit smoking. I struggled with breathing and landed in the hospial twice. My dad had lung cancer. Gerard smith lost his life to cancer when his life was on path with purpose to his son and in his passion.
Even as its hard and still holding on to smoking for habit to keep away the stress and hunger... I should make the choice now and follow through on quitting before the damage comes in soo deep that there is no turning back.
Appreciate you sharing your story and providing some additional insight on Gerard Smith... we all have vices and I wish you success with conquering yours.. salute!

I saw them for the first time in sxsw. I saw a bunch of black dudes wearing jerseys get on stage then absolutely blow me away with such a grippingly unique sound. They played ambulance and staring at the sun. To this day they are one of my favorite bands and that was one of my favorite live music experiences.
Way different vibe, but I really like Daves Scarlett Johansson Tom Waits cover album.

I 100% agree with your interpretation of The Wrong Way. And your input on the Magical Negro character trope was new to me but I do believe that seals the deal with what TVOTR wanted to say. (James Earl Jones’ characters in Field of Dreams AND Sandlot come to mind when thinking of the characters for me). I guess I always thought it talked about how black people are represented in Hollywood but I never knew there was a whole BOOK about this level of typecasting.
It’s like a wake up moment, then a rationalization of values “I won’t cast pearls to swing, no I won’t march peacefully. No negro politician is stirring inside me…but an angry heartbeat”
And yeah the whole tone is eerie and sinister, and the groove and whole feel of the songs sounds like fast marching of several pairs of feet.
And the last line “your guns are pointed the wrong way” sounds like a call go action for people to come together and fight the powers up top, instead of looking sideways at your neighbors.

My dad, oh my dad. Racist, bigoted Mexican American. Yeah, I know. How can a Mexican American be a bigot, you may ask? Well, I was nine years old when I realized he was a bigot. You're not even a white man, I thought. He was a U'SAF Airman for all his life and I think he had something to prove. Anyway, I grew to understand race differences and embrace them. I discovered "black" music and I love it. My dad hated it. I didn't care. So, TV On The Radio simply fits in with my life, my love of music and I really didn't give a crap what my dad thought. Still, after all these years (I'm sixty five now}, I gravitate towards the music that moves my soul. And that's TV On The Radio.

Go back and listen to Happy Idiot through the lens of "toxic masculinity." Not the angry, accusatory slur that that phrase has become in social media, but the basis of where it started as a term of art in psychology.
Yeah, the imagery is fairly clear and overt, but the message underneath is just fuqing heartbreaking to hear from one guy to another. The way I put it to guys is that "choosing not to feel" is like putting your feelings on a credit card. Sure. You don't have to pay it now, but you'll have to pay it later and with interest.
Happy Idiot it a song that I PRAISE for being overt and not so subtle. It's yanking off the bandaid of what we all do, but we don't talk about. Can't talk about the wound if it's always covered up, obfuscated, layered under layers under layers.

I would say in the early 2ks music def was a melting pot, this is the time when neptunes/nerd got popping they were an example of blending music genres. This was happening in the late 90s but ti was more underground
