  • Here we are with amother femal Japanese metal band. It's another outstanding performance (as they all seem to provide). But this one has a violinist. So, how does that make this band stack up against all of the other female Japanese metal bands? Come on in and see what I think of this tune. Please enjoy my latest video, Unlucky Morpheus -Dignity of Spirit - Does a Violinist Set Them Apart? A Metalhead's Reaction.

Power metal is very much alive in Japan, but Unlucky Morpheus refer to themselves as "technical melodic speed metal", but the thing is they can play what ever style they want to play. They did a online concert for a Christmas day, a couple of years ago (during the covid lockdown), where they played their songs in a 1920 swing style, with a metal edge, they also can go in to a acid jazz, with a metal edge, but they tend not to do those as videos.
This was taken from one of their Touhou arrangement concerts. Touhou is a platform video game series in Japan that is very popular, and they take the music from it and arrange it in a different style. And the band members are dressed as characters from the game.
What makes a band stand out from another, well I put a lot of that down to personal taste. It can also be something as simple as the vocalists, some people love the vibrato Fuki uses and some do not. Take Lovebites for some reason I don't like Asami style of singing, and I know that is a me problem, but the rest of the band I think are great.
As for promotion, yes that helps, and again there is a big difference here Lovebites are a signed band, whereas Unlucky Morpheus are a totally independent band they do everything themselves, which is one of the reasons why Lovebites are bigger than Unlucky Morpheus. And also the reason why it's a pain in the arse to get hold of Unlucky Morpheus releases, their releases are only sold in 1 or 2 shops, and one of them is a comic book store, in Japan depending on if it's a metal or Touhou album. Another difference is Unlucky Morpheus's music has more of a Japanese sound to it, as that is the market they aim for, whereas Lovebites and Nemophila have more of a western sound to them as the is the market they are aiming at.
What I mean by a more Japanese sound is Fuki's voice, she sings in a very traditional Japanese style, and the Touhou arrangement albums.
It's the internet that has become the great equaliser and the reason why Unlucky Morpheus are know outside Japan. They where shocked when they played their only ever show outside Japan,in London, and people knew who they were. And again when they did showings of their live DVD's on CZcams, in 2020, as Shiren was board and wanted to chat with the fans, he could not believe the number of people watching and how many where none Japanese.
And then Jill. Yes Jill makes a big difference to the band, they used to use a keyboard player, when live, but after Shiren heard Jill play for another band, he knew it was a sound he just had to have in UM. They do tend to use Jill like a 3rd guitarist at times, but with that violin sound or just as a straight violinist. Jill is that good she can play anything on her violin that you could play on a guitar. So yes Jill does set the apart, but there band in Japan that use violin players as well, also Jill is know for playing in other bands now and again, if they feel a violin will help their song.
To show you what I mean about Jill try this. 【Live Cover】Eruption(Van Halen) ~ The Dance of Eternity(Dream Theater) czcams.com/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/video.html
As others have said UM are 2 females and 4/5 males, I put 5 as there is another member that you rarely get to see and only appears at times in their Touhou arrangement songs, who harmonises with Fuki.

UM is not affiliated with a major label and does all of its own promotion and production.
This may be one of the reasons for its low name recognition.
However, in recent years, thanks to CZcams, Japanese metal music is being heard by people all over the world, and I feel that UM's name recognition is increasing.
Please react to the other songs as well, I definitely recommend the live performance more than the MV.

What makes one stand out over the others? Nothing. It's just personal preference, I guess. Like you said, they're all insanely good!
As for this band, like you also said, why are they not famous around the world? I asked myself the same question after watching their latest live DVD "XIII" Live at Toyosu Pit! This band should have been headlining European festivals a long time ago, in my opinion!

My opinion, significantly part of the reasons: Language.
This has plagued big & talented Japanese bands of the past, like X Japan.
But Babymetal are doing something different. Lovebites too, are doing something to penetrate the global market or audience.

they are one of my top 3 Japanese bands, all their members are top notch musicians, their music style combines speed metal, neoclassical, melodic death and metalcore, I am looking forward to you react to them again!🤘🏻

You might want to react to their dual song/s Cadaver/Redavac. It's the song forward then backwards with the exception of the drums and the vocals on the reverse. The video is a trip.

Great reaction. I just love this band. The music is top-notch. But I also really like the Gothic look too. It's a great all round package. Fuki's vocals can be divisive. Personally think they fit the music perfectly.
Band-Maid, Nemophila, Hanabie, Unlucky Morpheus and Lovebites are my go tos. Five very different sounding bands with a helluva lot of talent.

Great reaction and I very much agree about the talent of Unlucky Morpheus. However, they are NOT an all female band. Only the vocalist, Fuki, and the violinist, Jill, are female. Of all the female vocalists I have heard, and I have heard quite a few, Fuki is the best in my opinion. Prior to Unlucky Morpheus, she was in a power metal band called Light Bringer. She is also part of a side project called Doll$Boxx with the instrumentalists of Gacharic Spin. As for Jill, there are other videos that lets her showoff a whole lot more. The guitarist with the guitar with the nub head is named Shiren and he is the primary composer. In recent years he has suffered from chronic tendonitis in both arms. he can't use a guitar strap because it is too painful on his shoulder. He also has his guitars made custom so they are as light as possible. For a period of time, he had to stop playing so he just sang. He can do harsh vocals. He is back to playing but he is likely in pain the entire time. He frequently has to use a guitar stand.

The vocalist, Fuki, is female and has a relationship with "Light Bringer".
The violinist Jill, also a woman, is an outstanding player.
Guitarist Shiren is male, leader and founder, and even writes and composes songs.
Another guitarist is Jinya, who is also male.
The male bassist is Yoko Ogawa, originally a jazz bassist.
The male drummer is Fumiya. He used to be the drummer for 'Garnerius'.
*By the way, Mao, who played the keyboard in "Light Bringer", is the "sixth member" who supports Love Bites behind the scenes.

Only lead singer and Violine players are female. They are playing cover song for a video game which has gothic taste with vampire, ghost and spirits from west and east, which explain their cosplay. The video game is generally called Toho shooting.

Band Maid Is as big as they are because of what they do off stage. They're basically they're own management. They're on their 4th record company and each one has been a step up. Plus they are constantly writing songs. Over a hundred original. No one else is even close. And the last thing is how hard they work promoting themselves. They're on Japanese TV and radio constantly. And blanket social media. And they're very personable and interesting on these shows. Especially Miku Who Is a one person promotion agency. She's has a Solo project that is doing very well also. Cluppo. Yes All very talented Acts. Just a matter of opinion. It's off stage where the Maids really shine. And I almost forgot. They interact with their fans the best during shows and they are always super sweet during meet And greets. And on line. I actually had a conversation with Saiki one night because she liked a comment I left. So great self promotion coupled with incredible writing quality and quantity. Did my best John. LoL. 😊😎🤘 Band Maid forever! PO!
PSS Plus I've played in a lot of bands but never played in one that could every song electric or acoustic. Yeah we could wing it. They don't. Completely different composition. Plus it's One of the very few bands that I know every members name and backstory. Just because it's just that interesting. Take care 😎🤘
