  • In this video, Matt talks all about growing cotton and what he does to strive for high yields and shows the quick progress of the cotton crop. Matt also shows the problems many southern farmers face with pigweed and the lengths he goes to to eradicate them. Matt gives a great example of how cover crops really help with weed control. Seed wheat gets hauled to the cleaner.

    Beautiful cotton Matt you have done a great job if you remember me I’m a 5th generation farmer in south Texas and we are planning to defoliate this coming week and we had about 25 acres arrogated and all the rest is dry land and that cotton is terrible it is hopefully 1.5 bale an acre or 750 pounds we check back with you and let you after harvest but what made it even worse is that right when it started to open we got lots of rain and what did open in that rain or before that rain is either has started to sprout or hard lock

    Every farmer has their favorite crop. You may like raising many, but there is always just one. You have the Cotton-bug, I had realized earlier this season I have the corn-bug. I'm way too far north to consider cotton but maybe I'll try to track down a packet of the shortest season cotton seeds I can find and see how they do. You might consider getting a few heirloom varieties for a test plot and try packaging up boles or seeds for viewers to buy. That might be fun. Maybe find a spinning/knitting club to do a few episodes taking your cotton from field to cloth/shirt/pants, using the old ways not high production modern equipment.

    I always check for cotton percentage in my clothing when I purchase some. Heck I even use the Cottonelle TP although it costs a little more than the ole wood pulp kind. Do what little I can for our food providers. Great video as usual, therefore my usual thanks for taking the trouble of making them.

    Ok, a couple of questions: 1. you said the plant will put on more squares than it can sustain. Is that why you try to stunt the height? Trying to keep the ones it HAS put on and not have to put energy into putting more on? 2. You said you were in the middle of spraying for plant bugs, and others would come later. So, does that mean that each bug has a "season" and the plant bugs won't be an issue when the stink bugs make their run?

    • @griggsfarmsllc
      @griggsfarmsllc  Před měsícem +2

      1. Yes. Regulating height leaves more energy to retain squares and bolls. Also makes it easier for insecticides to penetrate interior of plant and control insects.
      2. Plant bugs are a season long issue but are more problematic early-mid reproduction. They typically don’t cause damage to larger, older bolls. Stinkbugs, bollworms, etc typically don’t build significant populations until later but have the capability to damage older fruit
