The critique of many modern string players playing in a "me, me, me" way with over-exaggerated vibrato, rubato, etc., is so spot-on. There's an epidemic of string players who equate playing with feeling with melodramatically vibrating every note. Sometimes less is more...
Loved this. Isserlis has the greatest Schumann Concerto and Chopin Sonata, ever. Love the Shafran comradery. Such a genuine artist.
Thank you so so much for posting these videos. As someone who studied piano first for a few years before taking cello at 13, I resonate with what Isserlis says. He mentions this early - music is NOT about competition. I so love that statement. When more of us realize this, we are able to truly appreciate the music we get to perform. There should be a standard of excellence. But at the end of the day, we are human. That is what I see in Isserlis 🙂

I don’t buy much of anything he says but it clearly works for him because his playing is unbelievably brilliant. To each their own I suppose 😂
Yes. That's the problem. They only know their own reality. I'll tell you what happens when a developing doesn't listen and imitate: The piece ends up a disaster and they are worse off then if they had never even played it in the first place!

I disagree, but that's okay, right? Bach has left a lot to the musician to figure out; I think things can be cliche-free once cliches are recognized (if listening to recordings). Just channel Bach's spirit...a direct avenue indeed... without the need for sheet music's nuances.

Isserlis can be so pompous sometimes. There is nothing wrong with imitating, at least at first. Your own sound will emerge anyway. Also you can listen to others in order NOT to develop a sound that you don't particularly like, and I have never liked his sound.

He imitates himself, again and again. Stale.
Well he’s British as well as someone that’s incredibly skilled in his profession, so of course he will insult you in the most elegant way possible. I believe he was talking about exercising caution when imitating as a musician *in university*, at that stage their technique should be developed enough to begin creating their own style and interpretation, not merely imitating.
Isserlis has publicly praised profusely the great Daniil Shafran, deservedly so. Listen carefully to Shafran and then Isserlis and you'll see an incredibly high degree of imitation in sound on the part of Mr. Isserlis.
