The Negroni and the Americano | easy cocktails with Campari!

  • In today's video I will show you how to make the Americano AND the Negroni! I'm doing these together because they are part of the same cocktail family. It all started with the Americano in the late 1800's, which was derived from a drink called the Milano-Torino, a mix of Campari (an apéritif from Milan) and Punt e Mes (a vermouth from Torino). With the addition of soda water, it became a favorite of American tourists by the turn of the 20th century, and was soon simply known as the Americano. Fast forward to 1919 in Florence, Italy, where an Americano was ordered with the substitution of gin in place of soda water. With this attempt at making the Americano stronger, the Negroni was born! Other variations soon followed creating a whole family of cocktails, but today it's all about the original two. Cheers!

I just tried my first home made negroni.
A little tip for other cocktail newbies like me - the orange is a game changer. If you think it's a bit to sharp/medicinal, then and a bit more orange zest. It seems to bring it all together.

When I first tried the Negroni, I could tell there were some good flavors in it - but I couldn't DRINK it! It was wayyyy too bitter for me. I just tried this version and I finally understand it! Who would've thought the bitterness could be balanced with, like, more spirits, more alcohol? It's incredible. Now if only you could get me to understand the appeal of a Martini

Anders - the Cocchi is a game-changer! I've been trying to get into this cocktail with varied success. I've had Campari for all of them. I've tried several vermouth brands, as well as Gins. I live in West Africa, so I don’t come across fancy red vermouth option that often. Americano is my favorite daytime drink at the end of a warm day. I usually add a dash of freshly squeezed orange juice and a ton of soda water in a collins glass. Makes the taste subtle while allowing you to drink a few without jeopardizing the rest of the evening 😜

2 1 1 is the way to go! I tried it for the first time today and it's nothing like the camparis I've had before. I've found that the vermouth was too dominant in the original recipe, though, rather than Campari. This recipe is rather more refreshing and has a much more interesting flavour. The bitterness of campari, now more pronounced I feel, lends a nice background to the more forward botanicals in the gin. I skipped the orange zest before tasting it and decided to go without it at all. A bit clearer than the original version, I think it looks prettier too! I have been ginger towards this cocktail in the past, but with this recipe, it landed straight amongst my favourites. Cheers!

Like you I LOVE Negronis and make mine the traditional way (1,1,1 of each spirit), but for days when I'm feeling like a fancy boy I'll sub out the normal Campari (sponsored video?) and put in Campari's barrel aged iteration instead. It's a Campari that has been aged in a bourbon barrel and gives the beverage a lovely, but not over powering, vanilla note. Great job as always! Wonderful videos. The negroni and boulevardier are what got me into cocktails. I don’t know if this is a thing but I have made a version using light rum blanc vermouth Campari and a dash of grenadine. Skip the grenadine if you want it more bitter. This was a result of getting the ingredients for el presidente and happening to have some Campari.

I just made a variant of the Americano where I used some Indian Tonic water (I had some to spare and wanted to use it) and a lemon wheel. Delicious!!

I completely agree with the 2-1-1 Negroni and I absolutely love both Campari and Aperol Negronis. I do feel like a good ol' Juniper forward classic like Tanqueray is a great choice for a negroni.

I happened across your Pina Colada video a while back and been hooked ever since. Im literally learning how to make amazing cocktails because of you while learning cool history about them. Thank you for being you :)

I do the 1:1:1 because I love Campari. I honestly drink just Campari and soda sometimes. Sometimes I make an Americano with dry vermouth too. I tried it in a Negroni but it was too dry.
I also recently tried a Kingston Negroni and I love it. I use Appleton Estate Signature but I’d like to try Smith and Cross if I can get my hands on it.
