    I have driven brand new VW's suvs, etc. Purchased old Niva, oh boy i fell in love with it immediately. This beast is capable of bringing you anywhere without damaging the underneath and other stuff that cost 4 digits EUR on others. So because of it being cheap and everything can be repaired easily you really don't have to think a lot when going off road.

      thats really what I like about it... Had a t3Syncro a while back.. and every time I used in for off-roading somethin expensive and hard to fix broke.... not very fun in the long run!

    I got a 2000 Niva 1.7 in South Africa. bought it 3 weeks ago. Done 1500km in it already. Got some work to do on the carburettor and also missing the vacuum advance on the distributor, amongst other things, and I am getting between 10 and 11km per litre which is not bad considering it's not running at full efficiency yet. I've owned a couple of cars in my life and my favourate is the Niva. This is my second. My first one that I still have, and am using for spares, has a toyota TD engine that is the root of all the problems I have ever had. Still made Mozambique in that one and back which was AWESOME.

    If it's carburated, it doesn't even need 95 gasoline - 92 is enough if you can get it. Glad you like Niva, it's a great car.

    I agree with you that this is the best winter car. I have 2 lada niva and gearbox is often trash because of heavy towing😂, if you are planning to offroad often I would considere putting in torsen differentials. Wish you all the best with your niva!!

    Seppo,
    Based on my 3 years of running a 1989 Niva...
    Take the driveshaft to the rear off at the gearbox end and check the tightness of the big nut..they vibrate loose and IIRC there is a crush cone that has to be replaced and then torqued.
    Otherwise 5th gear gets destroyed.
    There is a nut on the right side of the block (when looking forward) on the timing chain case area...
    with the engine switched off undo this and listen for the PING when the spring pushes the guide out further onto the timing chain
    After that do up the nut and the final pressure is from oil pressure when the engine is running.
    Stops the engine sounding like a bag of bolts in a tumble dryer...
    One great thing is the ability to use low range on the road as the constant 4wd allows this without damage to the drive train.
    I towed 2.3 tonnes of smashed up concrete to the dump...in low...really slowly..
    I changed the carb to a 32/36 Weber DGV with electric choke..(found on old Ford Cortinas etc)
    it made no difference to the fuel mileage but gave smoother quicker acceleration...
    The holes in the floor allow the vehicle to sink down so the wheels can get grip...
    mine was up to the door handles outside in the river..and up over my ankles inside..no problems...
    Just pull the mats up and the water drains out....
    I sold mine in the end to a 17 year old who then drove it home 300km...he didn't phone me so I presume it all went well.
    About 2006 there was a huge buy up up Nivas in New Zealand...an Egyptian entrepreneur sent two of his mechanics as "tourists" to live in a shipping container in a scrap yard while they dismantled as many Ladas and Peugeot 404s as he could buy... for the mechanical parts only...the bodies were scrapped.
    He had a huge market in the Middle East and Africa for those oily bits....
    So most of our RHD Nivas left our shores....
    have a good look at how tight the right hand side footwell is...and imagine how three pedals fit in there...and your feet with boots on.
    Those Nivas originally arrived here as part exchange with the USSR for our butter mountain...which they then deconstituted and made money by selling off the refined "parts" !

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  Před rokem +2

      Wow must be hard driving it with boots on then!
      Yea I plan to remove the gearbox soon to fix the 4 gear.. its popping out, But I would like to get something else road worthy before so I don´t get stranded at home!
      The chain tensioner is already done... :)
      So cool with the holes in the floor... !

    • @benu4842
      @benu4842 Před 5 měsíci +1

      You don't need to remove the gearbox just the transfer box and the intermediate shaft between them including the rubber coupling on the back of the gearbox. Tighten the nut on the back of the mainshaft the lock washer tab breaks off and revolves with the nut slackening it this allows the endfloat on the mainshaft which moves the shaft away from the input shaft and disengages the 4th gear synchronization hub on over run common fault.

    @user-ms5yl6ut1t Před 10 měsíci +7

    10L/100km is good for niva. You have 4 wheel drive and offroad transmission that need power to rotate. My grandpa have niva (carbyrator version) and 12L/100km is normal for 50/50 half road, half offroad. You can get 40L/100km in heavy offroad :)

    •  Před 2 měsíci

      My niva is niva 1600 and its consuming to much fuel like 5 6 liter per kilometers... what shall I do ?

    • @user-ms5yl6ut1t
      @user-ms5yl6ut1t Před 2 měsíci +1

      You mean 56L/100km? If you have carburator version you need to adjust carburator. Bt for off road even 100L not the limit :)))

      The drain holes allow the Lada to fill with water so you sink down and the wheels grip the river bed...and you move....
      If you are floating...you are a boat with no control.
      I had mine with river water level up to the door handles outside...just over the ankles inside...no problems....

    Tak for en god video.
    Lada Niva må ligge i top3 efter det bedste, der nogensinde er kommet fra Rusland.
    Alene det faktum, at modellen fortsat er i produktion efter 45 år, vidner om et særdeles vellykket, solidt og hårdført køretøj, der praktisk talt kan anvendes til det meste i Sibirien og resten af verden.

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  Před rokem +1

      Det er en fantastisk bil... Men på den anden side er det måske også lidt nemt at blive ved med at lave den samme.... En nyproduceret volvo 240 ville jo også være fantastisk men langt fra moderne standarder... det gælder også nivaen...
      På den anden side tror jeg også at en nyproduceret volvo 240 ville være mere pålideligt end noget andet på vejen idag... ;)

    Tienen un diseño genial, tracción permanente en las 4 ruedas, por eso consume y la dirección mecánica es un poco dura, tiene bajo,o sea fuerza a baja velocidad y tiene un gran bloqueo central, especial para el barro, hay que tener cuidado cuando se usa, hay que tratar de llevarlo recto, por qué cuando se tiene este bloqueo es como si le soldaran las ruedas a los ejes, entonces en una cueva se puede romper algo, tiene excelentes angulas de ataque, de salida y central, es corto no es tan pesado, tiene barras estabilizadoras, la distancia entre las ruedas delanteras es más ancha que la distancia entra las ruedas traseras, fácil de mantener y lo mejor de todo se sigue fabricando,ya llevan vendido millones ,pero con baja publicidad, realmente es un carro no ostentoso,con lo estrictamente necesario, hecho para el trabajo en condiciones difíciles, por algo lo siguen solicitando,yo tuve un 93 y mi papá un 92 y andamos por toda Colombia,trabajábamos en las parte rural por caminos agrestes, pero los lada nueva siempre salón adelante, ojo mi papá Tuvo Land Rover, serie ii y Toyotas Land cruiser y yo tenía Nissan Patrol, pero para los terrenos bien difíciles ,los lada eran superiores, si trajeran el Niva Bronto, correría a Comprarlo,sin pensarlos, biene mejorado, embrague más grande, más altura sobre el piso, ejes reforzados, además le agregaron bloqueos atrás y adelante, un verdadero 4x4,con confiabiabilidad demostrada por más de 40años ,por eso no necesita publicidad, sus compradores son bien informados saben lo que necesitan
