He died because his mask was kreping his old age from killing him. Using it on Monomon made him "feel his age," and he chose the Blue Lake as his final resting spot. He didn't kill himself he judt died from old age.
He probably left it because in the prequel comic he says he only has his nail to protect his mask, and he doesnt have his mask anymore so he doesnt need a nail.
