If you plan on keeping your car well beyond five years, you must change the fluids earlier than recommended. You will be happier and save $ in the long run. The manufacturer recommendations are meant to keep the cost of ownership reporting as low as possible. Their recommended maintenance intervals will wear out your vehicle prematurely.
These five-year maintenance costs are ridiculous. They are for those who do the bare minimum to maintain their cars. If you properly maintain your vehicle (especially changing the fluids earlier than the manufacturer recommended) you will be spending significantly more over that time. You WILL be replacing the car battery and tires every three to four years (not including hybrids or EVs). You will be replacing the water pump and the drive belt and the PCV valve after 100k miles.

Mazda cx5's (these leak oil but you can repair it for sub $500 from shops its something about the valve covers). used latest models for: Mitsubishi mirages; beyond cheap used with low miles and kia souls as well are honorable mentions to get you around for 6 yrs before junking it. For example you an get 2015 kia souls/mirages for sub 10k with 80k miles. Just get a 3 year warranty from the dealerships.... 5 if you plan to trade them in down the long term, they both tend to have transmission flops but you cant beat their price for a close to new vehicle at this price range.

@@sfrealestatedealmaker6001 i understand what you said BUT the different prices are for the same zip code, same driver, same company insurance.

I trade in 2017 Elantra for 2023 Corolla Hybrid. My annual premium went up from $1,500 to $1,800 for full coverage. Corolla is new vehicle and cost $6,000 more than what I paid for 2017 Elantra (new) and my insurance premium increased by about 20%. I am sure there is many other elements are factored in so I guess it is case by case.

The overall costs considered is not compared apple to apple, as the top 3-5 cars are cheaper than others, leading to overall lower depreciation and interest, which is obvious!!
