CELEBRATION OF FOOD - On my first day, actually first evening in Beirut, Lebanon, we tried over 25 different dishes - it was indeed a celebration of Lebanese food! For a long long time now, I’ve been a huge fan of Lebanese food. Even as a kid, I would go out to eat Lebanese food with my parents, and we’d some of the most common dishes like hummus, tabbouleh, baba ghanoush and shish taouk. So already with a love for Lebanese cuisine, I was thrilled to be in Beirut, Lebanon, for the first time, to try the real food!
What is Mezze? - Mezze is an entire culture of eating small dishes served as appetizers and salads. Along with a full mezze spread, it’s common to drink arak, a traditional Levantine spirit made from grapes and aniseed.
Abou Hassan Restaurant (goo.gl/maps/X9PMsa54MHgekLrg9) - Maya brought us to Abou Hassan, a well known mezze and Lebanese food restaurant in Beirut. I loved it from the moment I walked in and saw all the different mezze appetizers and salads lined up and waiting to be ordered. It was without a doubt a festival of foods, flavors, colors, a true taste of Lebanese eating culture.
Here are a few of the dishes we ordered:
Tabbouleh - Salad of parsley, bulgar, tomatoes, onions, lemon
Warak Enab - Stuffed grape leaves
Lebanese Toum - King of dips, pure garlic blended with vegetable oil
Shanklish - Aged Levantine cheese
Lamb Brains - Sautéed with garlic sauce
Tagine - Tahini (sesame paste), roasted nuts
Chicken Hearts - Caramelised in pomegranate molasses
Al Halabi Restaurant (goo.gl/maps/rkYpWgqZSsJFqPWr7) - Next, my friend Kamel () brought us to Al Halabi Restaurant, an iconic restaurant in Beirut, known for mezze and especially for the Lebanese raw meat platter. Raw meat is commonly eaten in Lebanon, and it’s a delicacy and it’s incredibly delicious. We had raw lamb fat, meat of various textures, kibbeh nayyeh, and raw liver. Additionally, after another spectacular Lebanese meal, we were ushered to another table that was filled with dessert - a bounty of never ending fruit and sweet desserts.
Thank you again to USAID Lebanon Enterprise Development Project for supporting my trip to Lebanon.

The people you're with are so nice and accomodating. Glad to see you explore Lebanon. Another country whose culture / gastronomy is unknown to most.
Mark, how clever of you to make it to Lebanon! One of my favorite countries ever! I went to the American University of Beirut couple of years ago to study Arabic and the history of the Arab world and I ended up falling in love with Lebanon. What a beautiful country! The mountains, the cedar forests ( a UNESCO heritage site), the amazing and ancient history of Lebanon known as ancient Phoenicia where the Alphabet was invented in the lovely city of Byblos, the land where Europa was born. She was born in Tyre, less than 40 Km from Beirut..
Lebanon is amazing and safe ! I’m so happy you get to live and see the wonders of that country and taste its unparalleled gastronomy . Although, the best food is generally eaten at people’s homes. The Lebanese cook like nobody else. And on top of that, they are so kind, generous and hospitable. I must go back. Greetings from Norway.
What a beautiful tribute, thank you for showing love to our tiny country. Much love from us to Norway!
What a beautiful and detailed description of your stay in Lebanon It really charmed my imagination cheers from the shitty American country I live in and love from yasharahla
thank you for your lovely comment to our Lovely Lebanon
You hit the bottom none can cook like our mothers home made especially in the mountains and inner lebanon are the best
What a beautiful way to show the true image of a tiny country! Thank you and you're always welcomed to Lebanon, your second home!
I have been to 67 countries and LEBANON is definitely in my TOP 3 !!! Amazing country, picturesque sites, very rich culture and history, extremely welcoming and friendly people so yummy food (I mean really really YUMMY) BEIRUT has it all ❤️❤️❤️
Happy to hear that :-)!

Such a beautiful city, I never knew just how beautiful Beirut is, sadly I started watching more of Beirut after the explosion, it’s heartbreaking to know how much damage was done...the people of Beirut are so amazingly beautiful, certainly not the place I’ve heard so many things about esp during the war, I hope to someday visit (after my visit to Jordan Amman, when it’s safe to go no less) I can’t wait, there is so much of the world to see, I lived in Texas for 22 years, born and raised in Canada, we think our food is amazing, far cry from other parts of the world
My heart goes to all Lebanese affected by the catastrophe... Much love from Manila, Philippines!
I still remember my first Lebanese Meze at directly at the Seashore in Beirut.
After more than 50 different dishes and 3 to 4 hrs at the table with lots of Arak, the Main Course of much different Fish has been served. I fell in love with Beirut and Lebanon at the first bite.
I was fortunate and blessed to return many times, sometimes for the weekend only. :-D
NB: It is unfortunate what happened to Lebanon afterward.
Thank you, Mark, for sharing. Enjoy
Next time invite me 😂😂😂 jk. But definitely 1 of my top places I wanna visit.
What a beautiful yet authentic comment 😂😂
