- Piran, located on a headland in the southwest corner of Slovenia, is considered the most beautiful medieval town on the Slovenian coast. The town was initially settled during the Roman Empire. It was part of the Republic of Venice from the 13th to the end of the 18th century, after which it was annexed to the Austrian Empire. After the First World War, the town was ceded to Italy. In 1954, Piran was annexed to Yugoslavia and became part of independent Slovenia in 1991.
The old port town that still has the remains of a medieval wall is preserved as a cultural and historical landmark. It comprises a main square, a fishing harbour filled with boats, a pier, and a seaside walkway bordered by restaurants. Piran is enveloped by fantastic natural sceneries, and lengthy, wide pathways follow the coastline from north to south, rendering it perfect for leisurely walks or cycling.
