Thanks for your awesome and honest comparison here. It’s been hard to find NiteoDeck reviews from people who didn’t receive review units. I have no problem with that at all, but it seems the people who got this free have been raving more than the few folks I’ve seen who had to buy theirs. I’m gonna stick with the Split Pad Compacts for now.

Love the vid and appreciate the comparison/review. The unibody “sled” option has always been interesting to me, but ultimately falls short due to the reasons you provided. I got the Split Pad Compacts within days of getting my Switch at the tail end of 2022, and love them. I’d love them more if they had rumble and amiibo support (which I didn’t think I’d really care about at the time) but they serve their purpose well. From what I’ve seen (and for me) the Split Pads win on all counts. The Switch is largely about convenience and if you’re only ever going to have it sit in the Nitro Deck or something like it then you’re fine, but that’s not me.

Thanks for the review man. The nitro deck was really made for people like me that use switch almost exclusively or exclusively in handheld mode. I have split pad compact, skull and co neo, binbok style joycons and now the nitro deck. I was very skeptical of the nitro deck after hearing things online. I’ve had it for a week now and it is by far my favorite device. I think the buttons are the best out of any 3rd party controller and I no longer get hand cramps or have my arm go numb in certain positions (happened to me on every other controller I’ve tried)

Great video I did a comparison on the pro vs the nitro deck recently too on IG.
My overall thoughts and dislikes of the nitro deck:
Let me start by saying this is a thick one. It feels robust in the hands and by no means will you feel like you don’t have anything to hold onto.
The Buttons feel great and are the best ones I have used personally and remind me of my pro controller but better IMO. While some people do not enjoy the placement of the right joystick I did not find it gave me an issue. The thumb sticks are great they give you a little bit of resistance but not enough that it’s not enjoyable. The bumpers give you such a satisfying click, they remind me of a mouse click. The D-pad is honestly very similar to the Split Pad Pro. It is not spongy but it's not stiff either. I had no issues with the rear four buttons and find myself just turning them off if I’m in a game that I’m not using them. The stand works great and gives you plenty of angles, not a 90° angle but I didn’t have issues watching things with the available angles. Now for the triggers, I wanted to like them I did but I just am not a fan of them. The action registers with almost no effort, but then you have the rest of the travel of the trigger. So you find yourself with immediate action and then a long follow-up before that action is pressed again. While you can probably train yourself to do a half press it is not something I want to do naturally. Also, I did notice the trigger has an occasional stutter while doing rapid presses in an FPS like Apex Legends. Overall I can say this will be my daily driver from now on unless I am short on space.

I have the Hori split pad pro and was using it for a couple months before I got the nitro deck. I was super excited about the nitro deck because I thought it looked good and would feel good in my hands. After many hours of play I can say the Hori split pad pro feels 1000% more comfortable than the nitro deck. The thumb stick placement on the nitro deck is not good and makes my hand cramp up after only a short time of play. The split pad pro is ugly imo but way more ergonomic. The only thing I feel the split pad pro is lacking is rumble.

I wanted to love the nitro deck so much, I absolutely, almost desperately wanted an oled switch lite pro type caper but the deck falls short.
If the right stick and buttons were placed on the nitro deck, how they are on the split pad compacts and the shape was less squared, (the bottom seems to taper in intead of out???) I would definitely buy one but alas the design is flawed.
I actually ended up cancelling my order and ordered the split pad compact along with the tomtoc case.

Good review. So I actually am one of those people that ordered a Nitro Deck (it arrives in like 2 days) and I got it for one main reason. My joy cons tend to disconnect from the rail system. Cleaning the contacts didn't seem to help, as it is more of a 'flexing' issue than a dirt issue. Either way, my goal for the Nitro is to bypass the rails entirely. That said I'm starting to get concerned about button placement and scratches as I have heard from a few other reviewers as well.

Having both i can say i do prefer the nitro deck, HOWEVER, your argument is valid. I could care less if the back of my switch gets scratched because i have the launch oled. I find myself holding my switch with one hand every once in a while while in bed or on the couch and the feeling of the solid built nitrodeck makes it worlds better for me then the split pad. When i use the splitpad and hold it by one controller, it gives me the feeling something is gonna break. Also, ive had 2 splitpads with stick drift, which you dont have to worry about on the nitrodeck due to the hall effect sticks.

Another thing to note with the split pad compact is there is no motion control. Not sure if it can wake the system either. Haven’t used the nitro deck but I have the split pad pro. Compact didn’t exist when I got them and these are all setbacks with the pro.
I actually use bin bok controllers now. It has a similar form to the split pad pro. Has a bit more grip though and the only feature it’s really missing is nfc support. It can wake the system, be used wirelessly or as individual joy cons, has rumble and motion controls. Customizable back buttons and turbo function. Even has Lights around the thumb sticks that you can change the color of. They’re surprisingly good controllers. Can get good deals on them too. I got mine with a pro style controller as a bonus for like $60 or $70. I can’t complain about either controller really. They’re both pretty comfortable and function well.

Definitely some fair takes given what you are after.
For me it solves my issues with the switch. I love having back buttons and the confidence I have in knowing I have Hall effect sticks that shouldn’t realistically drift matters a bunch. It being but chunkier for me at least makes it feel better in my hands for extended play. I will say the placement for reaching the right stick is basically the same as what I have with standard joycons. It’s a problem but one I am a bit willing to overlook despite wanting otherwise.
Sliding it in and out doesn’t bother me too much just cause I just view it as me going from one dock to another.

I feel like the form factor of the deck is for those who basically have no intention of docking the switch. I literally never dock my switch unless I'm going to play smash, the feel of handheld with joycons feels flimsy and uncomfortable so that's why I'm getting the nitro deck. The people who made the nitro deck also explicitly said that it doesn't work as a dock replicator so for those who got the nitro deck thinking it'd work they should have looked into it more. While I appreciate the unbiased review and it not being a reviewers copy, it feels like the nitro deck is simply not for *you*. This shouldn't take away from the product and what it's basically made for, unibody, no joycon drift and it gives the switch a very nice look to it imo. A teeny tiny underwhelming 7" WOLED screen on the go, Vs a 65" QD-OLED (Samsung S90C) + a high end surround sound system? Yup,100% taking the latter. There's no comparison. The only time i ever play in hand held is for the occasional retro pixel art game and that's only just for kicks. Titles like DK Country Tropical freeze, BOTW, Mario odyssey and practically everything else are at least 1000x better on a big screen TV with a quality SS system. HH wouldn't even be a last resort for me since i just can't appreciate the small screen, and a headphone jack-end popping off the top. :P

Not flexing at all, just expressing my preference. I've always felt this way Vs handheld gaming. Handheld gaming was a lot more interesting when the DS Lite & 3DS came out because they offered exclusive unique features that you couldn't get on a TV. Including 3D, AR, dual screens, touch based controls, swap note, etc. The Switch isn't do anything unique in handheld, but there's a LOT of great games there's no denying that, but it just makes it all the more easier for me to want to play them on the TV. :P
And you can actually score a 55"/open box or used version of the same TV that i mentioned for a LOT less. The S90C is the best overall TV based on picture quality and value on the market. But if you prefer handheld, than more power to you.

So for me I’ve tried and used so many alternatives I’ve used satisfy grip which was for me horrible. I’ve used skull and co grip which was pretty good. I’ve used the split pad pro and compact and to me also horrible and uncomfortable. I personally didn’t like the feeling. I have binbok which is ok, it was comfortable and had allot of great features, just didn’t like the deadzones. I have these GameCube ones that are nice but just a little to big and awkward to hold. Also has a cheap plastic feeling. And I have one from retroflag which you slide in similar to the nitro, it’s really nice and has halleffect, but not really comfortable for to long and looks weird. But the nitro deck in my honest opinion looks super premium and looks really comfortable and nice. I can’t wait to get one, I’ve seen so many reviews all good and a few negative reviews, so I believe in my opinion it’s worth getting I love the way it looks. I don’t care that you can’t dock it never bothered me. You are right about the ergonomics on the nitro deck. I got mine today and was so excited I'd finally be able to play it heldheld without hurting my hands, but it just doesn't work. Having the d-pad and analog stick directly underneath means you have to lift your hands off to reach. Pulling out the bow in totk and aiming with the right analog stick is just plain bad. It's a shame. I really wanted to love it.

Using the NYXI controllers with hall effect sticks I have been thinking about buying the Nitro Deck.
After watching this video tho I dont think I am going to buy it just because of the placement of the sticks and that u have to unslide it all the time. I wish this company would actually switch up the positions of the buttons and sticks, and arrange them more like on a Steam deck for ultimate comfortability!!

Hori Split Compact are great but kinda expensive compared to other joycon alternatives that have a battery, bluetooth and rumble. I got the Gengar version and I enjoyed them but had to return because they were disconnecting too often. It was kinda annoying. Nitro Deck looks good but it's too bulky and I like my Switch slim and easy to travel.

You had to grasp for straws a bit there to find negatives. ;) Not meant as an attack, though some will of course take offense.
Which similar product has Amiibo-compatible pads? (Answer: stick to the Joycons which are still fine.) I did wish for amiibo support for a "perfect" implementation, but realizing how it connects via usb, I think it is not doable (happy to be proven wrong with another product similar to the Nitro Deck which can use Amiibos). I do not have any Amiibo, but its implementation would have been great.
Right hand stick-if you have only played handheld switch all your life, you will be more than used to it. I cannot see the problem in mine-granted, I am not a "gamer" (yes and no), so I have zero consoles attached to my TV. Only played handhelds for almost 30 years; true story, though my consoles history have been: Coleco Vision (also played Atari games on it via the expansion), NES, Super NES-no other console since then, no ps, ps2, only gameboy color and onwards generations. And I only use the OG Switch with Joycons as a handheld device (has never been connected to a TV). So I admit it could be a problem for some hands or players not used to the Switch layout, but if I have used it with Joycons for years, so can others. I understand it may not be the most ergonomic use of buttons/sticks/pads, but you get used to what you use a lot, and I believe they just wanted to stick to the "original" configuration rather than adding their own ergonomic take, or copying an Steam Deck layout. You admit it is just as it's found on the Switch Lite. I find the final choice fine for my experience and needs, and it is the most valid "con" for those who are picky or used to other controllers. I bet that many of us will appreciate the "stock" layout vs a "better" one-even if you did not. I just don't think it's "bad" or "fatal flaw" as some have stated-maybe for *them*, but do not speak for myself. It could be a real "con," but only conditionally so.
Docking/undocking, etc. that is the part that sounded the most as if you just wanted to attack the ND for being a "unipiece"-of course it would need to be removed! And you remove joycons as well when docked. I truly see no issue at all? Nitro Deck is designed mostly for handheld gaming regardless.
Also, I think that what is popular is hating on the device, to be honest. Reviews tend to be either too good, or "it sucks", when it isn't really perfect nor bad at all. Even the price isn't too much. Let this people do well, and treat them fairly. Perhaps they'll be able to design something more to your liking in the future? But a trash, cheap product, the Nitro Deck is not.
TL;DR Each to their own, many will love the Nitro Deck for its amazing features vs a few minor cons. See if you like it for yourself, and decide. No one in the internet can decide what works and is more comfortable for *you.*
My apologies, and I have been enjoying my own, paid for Nitro Deck for a few days. Only ocassional, accidental pressing of my programmed commands on the back buttons have been a rare issue. Everything else, is far and beyond better than what I expected (especially after reading so many reviews about how bad it felt, its "cheapness", etc. Most have seemingly been written in malice/or with an agenda, as far as it comes accross.)
Happy Holidays to you and all loved ones. No personal attacks meant.

It's cool to see passion behind a product liek you have for the Nitro Deck. Some people really like it like you do. I found it hard to use and a disappointment but that is why the switch is so great. it's versatile in its accessories. For me if I am going to suffer from bad ergonomics I might as well do wit with a machine I feel looks good. and the switch alone is that. the nitro deck makes it feel like we went backwards in innovation.
