  • Episode starts at 4:30 (if you want to jump over our recaps and intros).
Why are folks flocking and going feral about Our Flag Means Death? What has us all singing the praises of a jaunty pirate show? Is it the amazing and diverse cast? The joyful representation of queerness? Main characters who look like real people? Or a showrunner who outright refuses to follow a long standing Hollywood tradition of queerbaiting?
From “Sexy Shmee” to Euphoria to crying about dead seagulls, we cover a lot of ground on this episode of What’s the Obsession With?

Talking about media retraumatizing people, definitely something I wish production companies understood. Thank you for putting it to words.

i’ve agreed on pretty much every point you’ve brought up!
i’m also in my 30s and have been heavily involved in fandom for well over a decade.
my FAVOURITE part is how involved the cast and crew have been. it seems like everyone involved is in love with the show as much as we are.
i’ve been watching interview after interview and every single one has spoken about how much they love the fandom. i’ve seen an interview with the person that plays Blackbeard’s dad in the flashbacks and he was so overwhelmed that his character was in a tag (literally just tagged) in a fanfic on ao3 and he cried talking about it because he has also been heavily involved in fandom and writes fics.
this is not a cast that will be embarrassed about an interviewer bringing up fan art or fanfiction. i truly think that alone is something that’s SO different with previous fandoms. it was embarrassing when it was brought up ten years ago. it’s not now, and i love that.
i’m hoping the studios will meet the demands of the strikes soon, because i know the cast and crew are dying to be involved.

I think the rest of the cast is very clearly meant to be "normal" looking people but Waititi has been a thirst object on the internet for years, despite usually appearing on screen in a weird costume or as a CGI rock person like the entire internet came to a standstill when 1) the pineapple romper pic dropped and 2) the threesome paparazzi pics dropped.

this is very true! i do still picture him as the sweet little awkward vampire with a heart of gold from WWDITS more than a typical “sex symbol.”
And those threesome pap pics were a cultural reset. - BRIE

Fantastic analysis of OFMD! I absolutely adore the show, and this dissection was really thought-provoking.
As a fellow old (and FOTC fan), I find it *hilarious* that Rhys Darby is now a sex symbol for Gen Z. He'll always be Murray the manager to me! lol
And, Brie, I couldn't help but hear "Problematic" in my head when you said "overwhelmingly white" 😉

Yay a fellow FOTC fan! yes it is kind of hilarious about Rhys. He's definitely handsome but not like, know, a typical hollywood dreamboat. He'll always be a "werewolf, not a swearwolf" to me (from WWDITS the movie).
And tbh I normally catch whenever I accidentally make Bo references, but thats funny lol. -- Brie
