What LINE Should You Use For ULTRALIGHT FISHING?

  • One of the most common questions I get for ultralight fishing is what line works best. In this video, I explain the main advantages and disadvantages of each major type of line for ultralight fishing. I also share some of my preferences and explain why I fish with what I do. This video is long overdue!

    HIGH LEVEL SUMMARY:
    Monofilament - inexpensive, soft, stretches, available in clear and hi-vis, low diameter options cast light lures far & have minimal line twist
    Fluorocarbon - you tend to get what you pay for so the best options tend to be pricey, high sensitivity, low stretch, very low diameter, available in clear, minimal line twist on high end options
    Braid - you get what you pay for so the best options tend to be pricey, no stretch, easy to detect bites due to line visibility, it is best to use a leader, available in numerous colors, can get some line twist if you are not careful
    Overall, I will continue to use all three options. I don't think there is necessarily a right or wrong answer but I do think that the lower diameter you go, the further cast distance you tend to get. That is why I love 2lb test. I catch a lot more fish because I use it!

    I ordered this to net the algae in a large pond in our backyard. czcams.com/users/postUgkxphFK7ETiDP5G4IGsNcg7vbASDp_YfDpI The net is very sturdy and easy to maneuver in the water. The angled edges make it easier to get into the smaller spaces among the rocks. I didn't realize that the front of the net doesn't actually have a frame to it, just the sides do, but it seems to work just fine. The handle extends to various sizes, which is a great feature when I'm in areas that are tight with shrubs at the edges of the pond. I can collapse the handle so it doesn't get stuck in the bushes.

    In my opinion the right choice is using braid as a main line and using fluorocarbon as a leader material. You just have to get good at tying a line to leader knot such as the FG knot, uni-to-uni knot or my favorite the Alberto knot. The leader gives you the low line visibility to the fish and fluorocarbon line also sinks much better than braid which helps with ultralight line and lures, and the way fluorocarbon stretches makes hook setting better than monofilament. The braided mainline gives you better casting distance, higher line visibility, more sensitivity, and no line stretch which also means better hook sets. The only crucial part is getting good at tying line to leader knots, but once you get that down then this is IMO the best way to go

    I've been ultralight fishing since the 1970s and the gear certainly has changed. When I got seriously involved it was mostly to pursue high-mountain trout in lakes and streams, plus I'm a bit of a techie engineer. My go-to rigs today are imported Daiwa and Shimano finesse reels on light and UL rods or fly-rod hybrids. My favorite rod is best described as a "fast" fly rod blank made up like a spinning rod. Nothing beats an effortless 1000-size reel with "infinite" drag; but there's no market for them in the US so they have to be imported from Japan or Australia.
    Regarding lines, I settled on 4-lb and 6-lb monofilament (Spiderwire) and 4-lb and 3-lb Berkeley Nanofil as on my UL spools. It's not unusual for neighboring anglers to ask me what I'm using because my casts appear long and effortless. Some of it's the line but also pairing the rods, reels and baits for best performance. My favorite trout rig is fly-and-bubble (either dry fly or nymph) although a hopper-dropper rig is perfect for stream fishing.
    NOTE: Users report problems with Nanofil (breakage, etc.). Somehow I don't have the problems with Nanofil, probably because I always use leaders and am gentle with set-ups.
    Best day ever was a 100+ day on a mountain lake with my SO and some friends, so many trout we honestly lost count after 40+ each. It seemed like every other cast got a hookset.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před rokem

      Right on. Sounds like you are an ultralight addict like me :)
      Nanofil is a very unique line. I tend to have a love-hate relationship with it. I don't personally like the "wirey" feel that leads to a lot of memory on a slow sinking presentation. I do love the super low diameter and castability though.

    Another fun and informative outing. Must say I prefer braid with a fluoro leader for just about anything. I don't see any reason to go lower than 6 pounds for the braid, since it's going to be thinner than 2-pound mono. But if you want a fair casting-distance contest (pound for pound) you have to go right down to 2-pound braid, which is so thin it barely exists. I've had fewer tangles and handling hassles with braid than with mono. I don't use fluoro for anything but leader material, and that helps keep me happy.

I wish you could have demonstrated it because I feel like it is a very good middle of the road between mono and fluro but to each their own. I use larger line because one minute it’s a dink bluegill, next could be a 24in smallmouth. I’ve caught huge bass on 6lb no issues, I usually do better ultralight than full-size baits. Usually 6lb line mono is what I use. The reels I have are Shimano 500,750 spin cast. I've broken 3-4 rods, and never lost a fish die to mono. After 6-7 fish I always cut 10 inches off and retie.

    Great video, lots of excellent info about the pros and cons of each type of line. I personally like using braided line with mono for leader.
    I think an important thing to note about braid is that one spool-up will last you all year and then some. When I use mono it seems like it needs to be replaced every couple weeks, it gets brittle and coiled up and line management gets annoying. Braid took some getting used to but once you do I rarely get loops or tangles, and it just lays flat in the water no matter how long its been on the spool.
    My ultralight has been spooled up with 10lb Sufix Performance since the beginning of last year and still going strong. Power Pro has been a let down in comparison - knots slip, more tangles, seems to fray more in less time. Although I've also had them both spooled up for the same amount of time, so that's the difference versus mono/fluoro to me is that braid just last forever in comparison.

      I actually really like it in the 2lb test. I still prefer mono because it isn't quite as brittle. But the Samurai doesn't seem to have memory and it hasn't had a single tangle.
      I think fluoro is weird that way though... Some fluoros, I love their light stuff but hate their heavy stuff. Some, vice versa. For bass applications, I tend to just go with Sunline and call it good.

    Well when I get my new ultralight reel I am still not to sure . I used florocarbon and ua it cast really good haven't caught anything yet last August. Fishing late. So maybe I might try Mono....

      I have had better experience with mono than fluoro for UL fishing. Both are fine options though!

    Is 3 lb mono hood for casting?

    So what hand are you? I see that you switch hands between casting and reeling.

    • @FishAnything

      Lol I try to be ambidextrous but my main comfort is to cast with RH and switch hands as the lure is in the air and then reel with my RH as well.

    Also, a negative thing about braid is that unless you buy quality braid it can be loud and annoying when you are reeling.

    All I do is ultralight fishing (aside from sturgeon with 100lb braid) and my go-to is 4lb Yozuri hybrid. 8lb break strength and the size of a few human hairs. Excellent for skittish wild trout.

      Awesome! I just got some Yo-Zuri hybrid in some higher sizes. I will definitely have to get some of the small stuff too. Thanks for sharing!

    I’m happiest and most confident with Fireline. With Fireline I experienced less line issues and if your patient the twist and wind knots come out surprisingly easy if & when they occur.
    Monofilament just creates frustration & disappointment.
    Fluorocarbon, the jury is still out but yet to satisfy.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před 3 lety

      Yeah I definitely love fireline too but it just doesn’t cast as far for really light lures. I think mono can be good or bad depending on the brand. I’ve had fantastic luck with trilene sensation

    Any tips on putting new mono on a spinning reel to avoid line twisting

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před rokem

      1) don’t use line with too large of a diameter
      2) make sure the line winds on to the reel spool the same way it was sitting on the plastic spool it came on
      3) keep it tight while spooling and try to go fish it and get some resistance to get it tight to the spool. Sometimes I like to go out and cast a heavier lure and get a lot of the line wet and accustomed to the spool.

    I notice you cast with your right hand then switch to your left to reel with your right. Have you tried switching the reel handle to the other side and reeling with your left hand??

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před 2 lety

      I have done that with a couple of my reels. I am trying to like it but honestly I just prefer to reel right handed haha

    I use Suffix Advance Fluorocarbon 4# for ultralight. For my light power and on upward, I use Spiderwire Invisibraid, Suffix 832 or J-braid. Any 8 strand braid will do.
    For me, Fireline is too stiff and you can see that it is not supple just by looking at it - you won't have uneven curves or kinks in the line when not under resistance. Supple braids cast a lot further than mono or fluoro pound for pound. I see a lot of saltwater anglers using Fireline because of its toughness/abrasion resistance in heavier applications such as for striped bass. Not many use it for finesse fishing (that I know of). I look at your line and I can tell you're gonna have trouble with it.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před 2 lety

      I switched a reel over to J-Braid and agree it is way better than that Fireline!

    Nanofil for the main line and fluorocarbon for the leader. Throw everything else away. I've caught literally thousands of large trout (meaning 20" or longer) on my ultralight using this set up. I've tried about every type of line and nothing beats the Nanofil main line flouro leader. Is Nanofil perfect? Oh heck no and it does wear out faster than regular braid, but it makes up for it in castability, sensitivity, and tiny line diameter.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  Před 2 lety

      Good intel! What kind of leader connection knot do you like? I’ve found that nanofil slips pretty bad with my standard double uni

    • @huntzz21
      @huntzz21 Před 2 lety +1

      @@FishAnything I use a double uni knot but you have to go 10 wraps with each line. I’ve never had one slip ever and I fish a lot! I only do the 10 wrap with the line to line. For the line to lure I usually only go 5 or 6 wraps, but it’s 10 lbs Fluoro. That might seem heavy, but it’s all about diameter not line weight. A lot of 10 lbs fluoro is the same diameter as 4-6 lbs monofilament. So in short if you have 6 lbs Nanofil with 10 lbs fluoro it’s all the same diameter as 4 lbs mono and with a break strength between 6-10 lbs. pretty tough combo to beat.
