  • If you are a fly fisher then most probably you have thought about tying your own flies. For some the two hobbies go hand in hand fly fishing and fly tying. For many of my friends fly tying is a chore a necessary evil to get the flies they need for fishing. For others the fly tying is the main hobby and they seldom wet a line. Luckily for me I enjoy both hobbies very much, the truth be known though I would rather be fishing. What I want to do in this video is lay down five considerations if you are considering starting down the road of tying your own flies. I hope it is some use to you.

    Great video. At fourteen I caught a seatrout on a fly made with wool and budgie feathers using a rod my father made from a tank aerial which he got from Echange and Mart. That was me hooked on fly fishing and fly tying. I'm now 74 and still fishing, although my main hobby is probably fly tying much to the delight of family and fishing friends, I give away most of the flies I tie now.

    I started with a complete kit in late August 2023after having 2 heart attacks and couldn't get out fishing, came with loads of bits and bobs and some stuff that I will never use but after watching yourself on utube my wife purchased me a beginners guide to fly tying aswell now I have tied myself over 100 different flies to try. Your tutorials are great help and I have even copied some of your patterns the best I can and I'm sure they will all catch fish . Keep up the tutorials please it really helps us that are new to fly tying , as for what you were saying about tying your own flies not being cheaper than shop bought I can totally agree but I'm sure when I get out and catch my first trout on a fly I tied myself the feeling of know I tied it will make up for the few hundred pounds I have spent regards sean

      Glad the tutorials help Sean, at least it’s a fairly gentle hobby. You have to look after yourself, two heart attacks is no fun I bet. Kits are ok…..ish but as you say half the stuff never sees the light of day. It has taken me many years to build my fly tying kit. I am probably not needing to buy anything else ever and still have enough stuff to tie for 100 anglers. Will I stop buying stuff ….. doubtful. 🤣 take care of yourself Sean and best of luck with the new hobby.

    Your right about having space. On my first day of retirement out went work related stuff in went fly tying gear, from office to heaven on day one 😊. Since then I am filling the space its amazing,I tell the wife it's a legacy for some one. In a position now I do a few comissions so it just about pays fr its self, but yes it sure does eat the cash . You mention Davy McPhailYes without a doubt the best in the business by far such a great way of learning for both novice and improvers as they say every days a school day never so true as in tying

    I 100% agree with this video, I enjoy your content. Proper vice is a must, it is like trying to cast distance with a cheap line, it just does not work. JVice is a fantastic vice.
    When starting I would suggest to join a fly-tying club, CZcams is great and there is fantastic content out there (I like tightlinevideo 1-minute tips) but you need that one-on-one tutoring.
    Catch a fish on a fly you tied and you are hooked, you won't buy another fly :-)

    Perfect timing and great content. Fish you never forget. First fish. First good fish. Fish on a difficult day or key fish during a match. First fish on a fly you made yourself. First fish on a twist of or a new idea of your own. The mat to protect the work surface is key not only from tools, spills of varnish, resins, helps you spot not only waste materials. Importantly wire, beads, hooks one hook dropped. A pet one of the kids or the fishing non permission officer finds it? Hell to pay. The vice yes a quality one is important as are scissors at least fine point with if possible a micro serrated edge. I still used barbers scissors for precise cut of threads and hackle. Use a cheaper/older pair for hair fur or wire. Bobbin holders again cheap never lasts long the tube ware down and grooves damage thread. When finishing the fly and you begin to whip finish. Possibly by hand at first. As soon as possible find the whip finish tool you are comfortable with. Then your heads will be consistent and repeatable. UTube has many skilled and gifted teachers. Something we did not have access to back in the day. Things like seals fur even moleskin are even more difficult to source. Blends of squirrel muskrat ect help as have UV resin high density foam, UV materials, and fritz. All opening new possibility’s for the future. The next couple of months are going to have many hours behind the vice in preparation for the coming season

    I bought me a 70 dollar bobbin holder, and I never like it. its one with the wheel in the middle of the arms to tighten things and it slips so the bobbin comes loose. My favorite bobbin holders are 20 dollars, and a couple that i use quite often were 4 dollars each.

    Two comments. First, fly tying is cost saving considering the alternatives. A night at the vise is much cheaper than a night at the pub or out golfing. Second, do you have a recomendation for a British Hopper pattern? You refernced that they were far different as is a spider pattern.

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  Před 5 měsíci

      To your first point it all depends on the dram you are having while tying 😉 I do not what you mean though a night out is not cheap! Have a look at this Hopper there are lots of variations but this is a good starting point czcams.com/video/M76HU-LDc7Q/video.htmlsi=YQ7iQTImSCTJYBvN
