  • Tonsils are part of the immune system and when they are healthy they help regulate the immune response against germs.
In this video, I review some important differences between acute and chronic tonsil hypertrophy (large tonsils).
Research shows that acutely enlarged tonsils provide much more innate immune function than chronically enlarged tonsil.
If tonsils are acutely inflamed, I prefer to figure out the underlying cause and treat as holistically as possible often with diet changes and lifestyle modifications to reduce exposure to allergens.
In chronically enlarged tonsils, the tonsils are often NOT providing good immune function anymore. The large tonsils may be the source of recurrent infections or contribute to problems with mouth breathing, snoring, and sleep apnea which further hinder the immune system. Surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) can sometimes be helpful.
In my practice, I provide a 90% partial tonsillectomy that gets rid of the obstructive or infected parts and keeps some of the good functioning tonsil tissue intact to continue regulating the immune response.
The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms, the underlying cause of the tonsil hypertrophy, and the individual’s overall health. The size, color, and growth patterns can offer some helpful clues.
