Comparing the new Fellow Opus for filter brewing to the Ode Gen 2!!! Let me know your thoughts or if you’ve compared these two yourself 😊☕️🤘
Really glad someone did this exact video. Thanks for putting it together!
Thank you for watching!!! 😊
Great video. Really appreciate it. Just purchased the Opus right before I watched this. Can't wait to try it!
I'll wait for the Fellow Oedipus

Great video! Thanks for showing the differences between the two when looking at pour over!
Thank you for watching!
Great video man! Glad I found you and checking out more of your content! 🥓🙌
Thanks!!!
really fantastic video tbh- informative and to the point.
Thank you very much!!
Ahh, we got us a new guy. Banging video, brother! Love the composition! Subbed
Thanks man! I’ve been doing video production and have been into specialty coffee for a long time but over the past year I’ve been combining the 2 passions! Thanks for watching 😊
Im needing a new grinder this was very helpful
Love this style, greetings from Germany, subbed. Keep up the good work :)
Thank you!!!! 😊
Brilliant work and review
Thank you 😊
Loving your content and presentation style. Subbed!!!
Thank you!!! I’m a little behind on content but I’ll have some new stuff coming soon! 😊
Very well made video! I think you convinced me to get the Opus
Awesome! Thanks for watching
High value video!!! Thank you!
Recent subscriber here. Really appreciate your reviews starting with explaining what beans you’re using, taste notes, and then mentioning what notes you’re tasting with clarity/body, etc. Many reviewers don’t mention those and they just say “yup lot more clarity on this one over that one”, which is kinda difficult to gauge how the grinders or burrs are performing on certain beans.
Really enjoy your videos and looking forward to more videos!
Thank you very much!!! I’m trying to get back on track with more consistent videos but I’ve been very busy with client video work! I do have some plans for new video coming soon 😊
Great review. Love it.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Just got a gen 2, no more fighting with my varia hand grinder …. So far I looooove it, no more breaking a sweat each morning, enjoyed on its first run
Good luck with your account growth! Subbed
Thanks! I appreciate that 😊
Thanks for an informative review. Noticed an espresso machine in the background. Have reviewed the Breville Impress Touch?
Not yet!
I love the perspective, I am still debating between these and the ode 1. I'm definitely subbing though.
Thanks! I would highly recommend the Gen 2 Ode if you go that route. It’s much better than the Gen 1. Rhe coffee is noticeably better due to the upgraded burrs.
@@coffeenerdaaron Thank you!
@@coffeenerdaaronwhat if they both have the SSP burrs?
@@not_your_raccoon either Gen Ode’s with SSP burrs is going to be way better than the Opus unless you really love conical burr flavor profiles for filter or want one grinder to do both filter and espresso. The Ode is not designed for espresso grinding and there aren’t any upgraded burrs for the Opus that I’m aware of.
Great video as always Aaron!
I’ve really enjoyed playing around with the Ode 2. They really nailed it with the Gen 2 burrs.
I actually have been preferring the V60 with the ode, whereas I prefer the Orea v3 with conical grinders. It has something to do with they balance each other out.
Ode is low complexity, and v60 is high complexity. Conicals are high complexity, and Orea is low complexity. In order to get cups that are sufficiently bright, and sufficiently complex, I find that pairing them this way works well.
Yes the Gen 2 burrs are awesome!!! I too enjoy playing around with varying brewer and grinder combinations. I do find I always land back on the Orea most of the time.
Interesting, thanks!
is it weird that im rewatching to compare grinder loudness? hahah. For real though, the value on the Opus is off the charts. awesome video guys!
Haha! You crack me up man!!! 😜
Great that you pointed out the Opus is conical bur vs the Ode being flat. Maybe that has something to do with the ~$150 price difference (?)
I don’t think the burr choice has as much to do with the target price point as the materials choice. It’s mostly plastic!
I suspect that the next iteration of Ode (Gen 3), should also be able to pull great espressos. But for now, the Opus is the far better option for the budget conscious shopping and someone that wants versatility to brew both filter and espressos.
Thanks!
Thank you!!! 😊
I’m also curious about the Ode and Opus, some would say Fellow bicurious, which is why they called the app Grinder I guess.
Ended up getting the Opus.....outstanding! I like it 10x better than my Virtuoso.
Congrats!!
is it still great, did you have any issues with it?
@@emreproxtr it is still great, I love it. Easy to clean, remove burrs, etc
You did it again Aaron. You convinced me to buy another coffee gadget…
😝
Thank you for this great video! I'm looking to upgrade from my Baratza Encore and I'm thinking a flat burr might be the next way to go since it seems like the Opus would just be a marginal improvement over the Encore. I've just decided to go with the 1Zpresso J-Max for espresso grinds. If anyone here has better suggestions for an Encore upgrade I'd love to hear em! I'm mostly doing Aeropress, French press, and V60
Thanks for watching! Hand grinding for espresso can get a little frustrating but if your only doing espresso occasionally then it's not to bad, and the 1Zpresso's are great! As for upgrading your Encore you could go with the new Encore ESP but if you want to branch out to something different or want to go flat burr for your filter and other brewing then the Fellow Ode Gen 2 is great for the money, you could always go with the new DF64V, or wait for the ne Timemore Sculptor which is supposed to be a game changer! Check out Lance Hedrick and Kyle Rowsell for reviews on them. And when mine comes in I will be doing a review as well! Hope this helps :)
@@coffeenerdaaron thank you so much for the detailed response! I ended up pulling the trigger on the Sculptor 064S on Kickstarter though I'm kinda hemming and hawing on whether or not I just want to do the 064 for a pure filter grinder. I'm hoping since it's expected to retail at $450 but is $300 rn on Kickstarter that it'll outperform the Ode Gen 2, the VS3, the Uniform, and Lagom Mini but I guess we'll see!
Based on the reviews I’ve seen and some of the people I’ve talked to it definitely seems to be outperforming the Ode. I still love the Ode but I think the Sculpture is going to be a beast!!!!!
Hi, I wanna ask does the Opus good enough for most medium-dark coffee? I mostly brew filter coffee (B75/V60,), Vietnam Drip like 80% of the time, and 20% doing some espresso-based coffee.
Yes I think it would be fine for that!
Good chatting with you today, I'll check out your videos!
-Shepherd from Frankly
Thank man!!! Great chatting with you too 😊
If they ever manage to come out with an Ode Gen 3 that can also do Espresso, I'm probably in. The Opus is not so tempting to me because a) the downgrade in materials / built quality and b) visual design. The Ode Gen 2 already looks and sounds pretty great but when I spend that much on a grinder, it better be universally usable. I'm still a V60 user at home but I can feel that midlife crisis coming and I want to be prepared for when that fancy dual boiler machine crashes into my tiny kitchen someday.
I agree, it would be great if the next iteration can do espresso! I know that would make a lot of people happy.
That's what I'm waiting for.
Conical burr -->more texture, more body
That means "thicker", "sirupy" espresso ?
Let's face it for 99% of people the Opus is all you need. Especially if you don't watch reviews by coffee experts who have acquired a palate most people never get close to. You get the same thing in the HiFi world. Buying more expensive equipment you will hear no discernible difference.
with a showerhead like that, i give it another 5 years till coffee snobs brute force their way to reinventing a frankenstein drip coffee maker on first principals, maybe with better temperature regulation lol
Can I use either for a French Press. (I Actually ordered the Ode 😊).
Ty
Yes both can be used for French Press! And in my opinion the Ode is better for that.
Yay!!! Awesome.
Ty for the knowledge you share.
What do you call that thingamajig that disperses the water from your pour-over pot to the grinds? I want one! :)
It’s called a MeloDrip!! They’re great 😊
Why ppl say that if i grind coffee in fellow ode the espresso would suck? I have opus, if i grind at range from 1 to 2 my coffee machine can’t handle it
The Ode was not designed to be an espresso grinder and doesn’t grind fine enough for most espresso machines to reach a pressure range that’s ideal for espresso. If you have a pressurized basket for your portafilter you can probably use the Ode on its finest setting, but it depends on a lot of factors like the coffee you’re using, the espresso machine and basket, or if you’re using a gen 1 or gen 2 Ode. The gen 2 Ode burrs can grind a little finer but are still not intended for traditional style espresso.
I own both gen 1 Ode with gen 2 burrs, and opus and a bunch of others (Niche zero, comandante… others), for filter coffee I far prefer the opus. Don’t have an opinion yet as 2 expresso for the opus.
Really? Even over the niche?
That’s interesting, but just goes to show you how peoples taste preferences can vary! I’m going to do a lot more filer brews with the Opus to continue comparing and see if my opinion changes over time. If my thoughts do change I’ll be sure to make a follow up video!
Niche can’t really do filter coffee that well, just for a pour over thats a little to fine, you have to go almost all the way to 50 max coarse.
@@coffeenerdaaron Ive been mostly doing v60 and aeropress in the 2 weeks Ive had it.

Have to ask why you're using the Melodrip after all this time, and even after the white papers that were published?
I’m not familiar with the white papers you’re referring to. I go back and forth with using it, it kinds of depends on the coffee and how much or how little agitation I want. I haven’t used it for a few months but that’s primarily because I’ve been brewing in the Pulsar.
How does Lotus compare to Third Wave water?
In my personal opinion it’s miles ahead! The ability to customize your mineral recipes for different coffees is awesome, and it’s way more cost efficient in the the Lotus kit treats up to I think 120 gallons of water for $60. To get that same amount of TWW it’s well over $100. Until something better comes out I’m never not using Lotus! 😝
I’ve been eyeballing Lotus for a little while now. I’ll definitely give it a try once my Third Wave packets run out. Does it produce better cups of coffee than the TTW, in your opinion?
@@ericbohaty9812 yes! Way better, it was a very noticeable difference when testing.
Thanks!! I’ll be switching to the Lotus for sure. I’ll do anything to help improve the quality😛
Awesome!!!
So what I take for v60?
I would go with the Ode if you don’t do espresso.
So Ode for the Mochamaster😅
I use an ode 2 with my Moccamaster, they're a great match
@@nat2r just bought a Uniform!
Sounds like the Ode isn't worth the extra $50 which is what I was trying to figure out. Also my wife does not like acidity in her coffee which the Ode tends to highlight so Opus it is!
Pretty easy to identify the opus in the video, since you used a different cup for it - 😂. The black paint sits higher on the opus cup.
😂 I didn’t notice that! Good eye!!
Opus was so bad for me. I was shocked!
I wouldn’t say it’s terrible, I feel like for the price point and the quality of the motor it’s not bad. Compared to other conical grinders, it’s not good!
Why did you do 3 different cups? Seems like a flawed experiment.
It’s called triangulation tasting and it’s pretty common in coffee tasting. It’s so you can try to identify the 1 different one. Since I was comparing 2 grinders I wanted to see if I could pick out the Opus vs the Ode with the same coffee, and identify the differences on the flavors.
I think this would have been better completely blind, as in someone else making the coffees in the other room. These cups are not perfectly identical so one can be subconsciously biased.
