1500w Rear Hub TREK Marlin 5 with a 52v 17.5ah Battery
Looks really clean, awesome job! Hope the Trek has held up well since the video.
The derailleur has screws on it so you can set how far it can go both in and out you then index it.
Love the vids like how you're up for doing anything
Thank you and yes I will put my hands to anything really, always find doing jobs yourself best way so no cowboying
Nice work! I’m actually a bike mechanic and I think your work looks proper! Ironically, I was thinking about doing a hub motor ebike a while back but never pursued it. Cheers!
I remember and In last video you did I could see mtb tattoo on forearm.
Appreciate the nice comment from a bike mechanic, means it don't look to bad. Hopefully won't fall apart on test ride lol.
Same I've been looking to do this for awhile just never bitten the bullet till now and after watching lots of vids I felt confident enough to try.
Thanks mate 👍
Nice one look forward to the ride video
I’ve also got a 29er, want to build something basically identical. It’s hard to find hub motors already built into 29 inch rims. I was considering buying a bare motor and lacing into my existing rim, but I’d actually rather just buy the whole thing. Your Vandervolt kit looks great, but I’m gonna keep looking for something a bit cheaper.
Definitely a little less popular the 29er I hear you about building own.
I think the vandervolt kit was a good price with 52v Panasonic 17.5ah battery. Batteries are the money.
Also these rims are black unlike most and can accommodate a wider tyre, bit more robust.
@@motomachinezuk8786 i was shocked it seemed very cheap at £660 ,i only had kirbebike to compare and don't know if one is more superior to the other but was £200 cheaper on vandervolt
Hi ive got VANDERVOLT 1500w kit and throttle instead of thumb type. Currently using a 2008 xy frame and had to mount battery under lower down tube - upside down with extra support like yours ive removed any stickers, use WD 40 or carb cleaner to remove sticker glue with a cloth. Nice video cheers
Yes looks alot better without the stickers/decals I prefer the stealth look. Mine came with thumb I didn't get a choice, it's OK though mixes thing up.
Hope your having as much fun on it as I do on mine.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it cheers
Look forward to seeing how this goes would like to try this on my bike as well good vid mate keep it up
Mate it goes quite well to be fair and feels real fast on mtb rims. First ride is uploaded now. Cheers I definitely think this is a fun machine and can't wait to learn more.
You changed KPH to MPH
You monster😂
Great job dude.interested to see how she runs.
Thank you and same here can't wait to test it hopefully tomorrow or Friday. Very interesting as my first pedal bike assisted experience
Nice mate 👌👍
Nice job. Looks good!
Cheers ! I'm very impressed with how it looks. Next test is the ride etc. ...
There should be two adjustment screws at bottom of the derailleur
I've disconnected the pedal assist sensor found it a bid to sharp. My neighbour has disconnected the sensor too and he has only got a 250w motor.
You have much more control of the bike with the hand throttle..
I get what you are saying it is quite aggressive in pas especially in a tight area. Why not just turn off in settings ? I have noticed alot don't install pas to start with I suppose I just needed to try myself and fit just for learning purposes.
Appreciate the info for sure as I'm new to this stuff absolutely enjoying it and the learning plus other users opinions/thoughts
Nice to see more and more illegal bikes out there, great job!
Do as you told and be a good boy
@@lassydogpie5390 My bike is ultra illegal, 6xpower and 2xspeed, only 48v, but 67Ah.
I built one of these.. u can put controller in a box loos alot better..
I’ve got exactly the same bike and am trying to convert it however am not getting a response from Vandervolt, do they still exist if not is there anyone else you recommend to buy an all in one kit off similar to the one in this video?
Ran into a problem that my brake caliper rubbing on rear hub
Hey mate I know it’s a few years ago now but converting a Marlin to an E-bike using a kit, however it doesn’t come with a cassette and the hub from the marlin is much smaller than is required for the e-bike conversion. Did you use some sort of adaptor?
which battery should i get i have 1000w rear hub .
Great video 🔥👏🏽
Thanks bud. As you might be able to tell I like electric power 🔌
I see you on a rental escooter, I think it was rental anyway
@@motomachinezuk8786 Yeah I’m staring to like the electric vehicles as well bro and no that Escooter was our own one👌🏽😎
Hi bud, fantastic video! I'm actually waiting for my Marlin 5 to arrive & DIY ebike kit. Could you point me in the right direction for the crank puller tool you used in your video and also the shimano tool you used to take the bearing/collar out.? Thanks a bunch dude 👍🏽
Hi and thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed. Best thing man a build himself I think.
I just bought a cheap bicycle tool repair kit from ebay.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crank-Chain-Extractor-Removal-Repair-Tool-Kit-Set-For-Bicycle-Mountain-Bike-/154958497750?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0
Might find a cheaper set if you look but this is what I got. Can get better kits but this is adequate.
Sounds like a good donor bike, good luck mate hope you enjoy as much as I do.
Cheers
@@motomachinezuk8786 Thanks a lot dude.! I'll send over some photos when it's done.! Keep it up, channel is awesome mate 👍🏽
I have a marlin 5 and just saw this video and want to do it as well lol. Where did you order the ebike kit from?
@@naytbreeze hey bud not sure if you got my previous message.. I ended up ordering the kit from AliBaba as I needed to keep the cost down. Currently waiting on parts, soon as it's all together I'll let you know how I got on 👍🏽
Got a link to the kit you bought ?
Hi, nice build I would jusg ask you how did you do the cabel manegmant becose I don't see that much cabels on ghe frame but I see many cabels on the stering weel?
It's weird this kit as most of thr cables are harnessed upto the lcd on bars so my cables are mostly that end. I have tried to keep it all tidy though. I've got then under the cross bar and up the seat post, often takes a few attempts to be happy with them. Hope this helps
Thank you I'm pleased with the build and it gets used alot .cheers
how many 14mm washer you used.
Hi I have a marlin 6 and have csc kit ready to convert could someone please tell me what to do with the brake levers as I have hydraulic brakes and you get brake levers with the kit is it essential to connect these? Or can you just leave these out and keep the normal trek levers on? Any help would be greatly appreciated kind regards.
Hi you can get hydraulic brake sensors that are just magnets on the brake levers. So yes you can still use original brakes. It's semi important to not use brakes while throttling it, just stresses the motor. Hope this helps
What size is your frame? I Have a Marlin 5 and the battery area size is about 22×11×17 (if memory serves me correctly - im at work). Is that the same size as yours?
This was a large frame that's all I can remember. Hope that can help
@@motomachinezuk8786 Thanks.
Why haven’t you linked the kit in the description bro. Get yourself some sort of affiliate link!
Good point I've emailed them 👍
What's package dimensions?
How true is the rim, the spokes look bent
Brilliant job .I've got the same trek and looking to do this how has the bike been in the long run also how much did it cost
Hi bikes was fine did over 1000 miles with no issues then sold it.
Where igot my kit is out of stock at moment and they've gone up quite alot over the last 2 years plus. Vandervolt.co.uk
Hope this helps
@motomachinezuk8786 yeh I'm going to get mine from vandorvolt think there's 2 week wait but I would rather get it from them the reviews seem to be very good thanks for responding 👍
So, when you pedal backwards it still goes forwards?
I like the build which kit did you use im wanting to convert my bike
Thanks it's from vandervolt.co.uk this kit and it's still going strong
Hi great video, I'm just trying to fit this kit but my brake caliper is rubbing on the actual hub? Any ideas? If I use a spacer to pull the caliper away from the hub the disc and caliper will no longer line up.
Hi the caliper usually has some space for re alignment from the 2 bolts holding it on. I had to use a washer to space it. The gap is tiny and can just about see the light between. This has been the situation on both my builds. I just had to re align calliper once I had a spaced it slightly. Hope this helps
It looks great would you recommend using tubeless tyres ? As when I'm out i'm always worried about getting a puncture and being a long way from home as it's a pain to get the back wheel off.
I know what you mean with punctures but I've never used tubeless so I don't have experience really. Not sure you could on these kinda rims ? Like you say it's alot easier and can be done most places a repair on tubeless with taking wheel off. Interesting to know though as sounds a good idea.
Is a worry when far away
@@motomachinezuk8786 Thanks for the reply. Looks like the weather is picking up for rides out soon I hope.
What size in this marlin ? Would i have enough room with a box for the controller ? Behind the battery
It's a m/l frame size and not this controller won't fit inside a case behind battery but it does without the lid which is how I have this bike now.
That's assuming you will be using same kit. Smaller battery would give more space
Where the link
Hello mate where did u get the support for don’t take off the back wheels ??
It's just a bicycle side stand mate. From ebay only cost about £10
What about a 3000 w conversion kit
I've been looking at some 3000w kits but not sure yet to be honest 🤔
Do you need torque arms front and rear and on both sides of the bike? Or just 1 on the rear? Thanks
On this bike I used one on the rear, I think some people use one each side but I didn't and its been fine on both bikes. Hope this helps 👍
@@motomachinezuk8786 thanks for the advice. Much appreciated
My rear hub motor doesn’t have a cassette on it how do I put it on?
It should just screw on bit if you want to take it off then you will need a cassette removal tool, cheap on ebay.
How did you stop the lowest gear catching?
I didn't I also realised i never use it as to short. I've only used the gears once when I ran out of battery. I just stay in a happy medium gear
Was there a throttle control option?
Thinking of doing this to my old mtb.
Yes can use only throttle and in each mode speed increases, 5 modes. Can switch pas off and use like a motorcycle.
@@motomachinezuk8786 cheers.
Did you use the brakes that came with the kit?
Yes because I got the ones for hydraulic brakes
Beautiful bike how is it holding up after a year?
It's holding up good apart from a controller malfunction but they changed on warranty within days so i can't complain. Thank you I agree 👍
Cheers
@@motomachinezuk8786 nice good to hear buddy
Does the battery have a USB port on it ??
No
where did you get the fenders from?
Ebay mate mucky nutz mudguards
What Ebike kit did you use mate?
Vandervolt mate website although they are out of stock at moment and just waiting for anyway now mate. Good service they provide 👍
Would this work on a 9 speed cassette mate
It would work but with only 7 gears that might need tweeking if you want them all to work correctly mate
Would i need to change my chain and derailer do you no mate i thought on a 9 cassette bike the had slimmer chains, might be wrong though haha
@@samagar3670 possibly but a 9speed cassette is still small, I would guess its fine, maybe if 12 speed I would think different. I'm no expert lol just self taught
I stopped it from goin in that gear as its pretty useless with a motor by adjusting the drailer.
what size frame is this?
Large frame
