A bachelor degree to work at anything with a “mart” in the name is crazy.
You don't need a bachelor degree to work at a lot of places..they just made it a compulsion to thin out application.

Giving up his mortgage is probably the dumbest decision he made. 20 years into a fixed, and just walks away at his age. Now's he's paying for someone else's mortgage. I would have refinanced the balance and get roommates.
first off this is a movie. he had zero cash flow . if he know what you suggested , he would not have needed to take the economics class. you also do not know what stage of mortgage he was in. I am going to assume year 3 from a 20 year mortgage so he has little skin/ equity in the game.
then you have to add arrears/ penalties in late payments, plus if he was underwater in the mortgage . he had to come up with a lot of cash fast . .
if this happened during the financial crisis 2008/2009, Banks were telling borrowers " you have to default before we can help you" which means F$^%A@k OFF.
You have to see the situation in the eyes of the protagonist- a simple man 9 to 5 and then retire . good movie though
@@billu5014 the movie is set in the North Los Angeles area. As a Navy veteran he would have been entitled to cheap housing in the late 70s/early 80s. Assuming his character is the same age, he would have been 18 in 1974. Meaning he retired approximately 1995. Too claim he was zero income is ridiculous. As pathetic as a military pension for a cook is, still a cash flow. Considering his personality as a lifer, he would have applied for a subsidized mortgage before his retirement from the Navy. The house they used would have been worth around 170-200K and now 1.7M and 7k in rent. 3b3.5b on half an acre with a pool. At the time of his termination, his salary after working at KMart for 15 years would have been ~40K. You're telling me that he couldn't rent out his 2 extra bedrooms on a house that was almost paid off? He traded 1200 a month plus rights of ownership for 2K for a crappy apartment.
