मोहम्मद अली जिन्नाह (जन्म नाम: महमदअली झीणाभाई, गुजराती: મહમદઅલી ઝીણાભાઇ) का जन्म आधुनिक सिन्घ प्रान्त के कराची ज़िले के वज़ीर मेसन में हुआ ऐसा बताते हैं, लेकिन कुछ किताबों में इनका जन्म स्थान झर्क को बताया गया है। पुराने दस्तावेजों के अनुसार, जिन्ना का जन्म 20 अक्टूबर 1875 को हुआ था। सरोजिनी नायडू द्वारा लिखी गई जिन्ना की जीवनी के अनुसार, जिन्ना का जन्म 25 दिसम्बर 1876 को हुआ था, जिसे जिन्ना की आधिकारिक जन्म तिथि मान लिया गया है।
जिन्नाह, मिठीबाई और जिन्नाहभाई पुँजा की सात सन्तानों में सबसे बड़े थे। उनके पिता जिन्नाभाई एक सम्पन्न गुजराती व्यापारी थे, लेकिन जिन्ना के जन्म के पूर्व वे काठियावाड़ छोड़ सिन्ध में जाकर बस गये।
जिन्ना की मातृभाषा गुजराती थी, बाद में उन्होंने कच्छी, सिन्घी और अंग्रेजी भाषा सीखी। काठियावाड़ से मुस्लिम बहुल सिन्ध में बसने के बाद जिन्ना और उनके भाई बहनों का मुस्लिम नामकरण हुआ। जिन्ना की शिक्षा विभिन्न स्कूलों में हुई थी। शुरू-शुरू में वे कराची के सिन्ध मदरसा-ऊल-इस्लाम में पढे। कुछ समय के लिए गोकुलदास तेज प्राथमिक विद्यालय, बम्बई में भी पढ़े, फिर क्रिश्चियन मिशनरी स्कूल कराची चले गये। अन्ततोगत्वा उन्होंने बम्बई विश्वविद्यालय से ही मैट्रिक पास किया।
मैट्कि पास करने के तुरन्त बाद ग्राह्म शिपिंग एण्ड ट्रेडिंग कम्पनी में उन्हें अप्रैंटिस के रूप में काम करने के लिए बुलावा आया। इंग्लैंड जाने से पहले उन्होंने माँ के आग्रह पर शादी भी कर ली लेकिन वह शादी ज्यादा दिनों तक नहीं निभी। उनके इंग्लैंड जाने के बाद उनकी माँ चल बसीं। इंग्लैंड में उन्होंने कानून की पढ़ाई के लिए अप्रैंटिस छोड़ दी। उन्नीस साल की छोटी उम्र में वे वकील बन गये। इसके साथ राजनीति में भी उनकी रुचि जाग्रत हुई। वे दादाभाई नौरोजी और फिरोजशाह मेहता के प्रशंसक बन गये। ब्रिटिश संसद में दादाभाई नौरोजी के प्रवेश के लिए उन्होंने छात्रों के साथ प्रचार भी किया। तब तक उन्होंने भारतीयों के साथ हो रहे भेदभाव के खिलाफ संवैधानिक नजरिया अपना लिया था।
ब्रिटेन प्रवास के अन्तिम दिनों में उनके पिता का व्यवसाय चौपट हो गया और जिन्ना पर परिवार संभालने का दबाव पड़ने लगा। वे बम्बई आ गये और बहुत कम समय में नामी वकील बन गये। उनकी योग्यता ने बाल गंगाधर तिलक को काफी प्रभावित किया और उन्होंने 1905 में अपने खिलाफ लगे राजद्रोह के मामले की सुनवाई के लिए जिन्ना को ही अपना वकील बनाया। जिन्ना में कोर्ट में यह तर्क दिया कि अगर भारतीय स्वशासन और स्वतन्त्रता की माँग करते हैं तो यह राजद्रोह बिल्कुल नहीं है, इसके बावजूद तिलक को सश्रम कारावास की सजा दी गयी।
