- Duck is deemed to be "dumber than a bag of hammers" and undisciplined, and he frequently displays symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He was nicknamed Duck because difficult things he went through (such as the apocalypse) went over "like water off a duck's back." On the surface, Duck can appear unintelligent, but he is smarter than others give him credit for. Such moments of intelligence occur when he helps Lee solve the mystery of the missing supplies. He has a wide knowledge of action comic books and usually obeys when others tell him to avoid trouble (aside from helping Lee's investigation whether Lee wants him to or not because he believed Lee was secretly asking him for help). Duck's lack of knowledge of the apocalypse is not stupidity as much as his parents protecting his young psyche. His accidental driving of a tractor onto Shawn Greene's leg and continuing to eat Mark's legs after the disgusting truth was discovered was simply due to childlike naivety (the latter more due to him not listening).
Very little is known about Duck prior to the outbreak except that he is from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and that his father, Kenny, considers him and Duck's mother, Katjaa, his main priorities. He was allergic to bees, was never fussy about what he'd eat, and did not enjoy using forks. He was traveling with his parents from Memphis, Tennessee after visiting his aunt when the apocalypse started. While parked at a gas station, Duck was grabbed by an unknown man, causing his father to savagely beat the stranger.
When bandits raid the Motor Inn after Lee takes back the stolen medication from a grate outside the camp, walkers are attracted by the gunfire. Duck and Katjaa are tackled to the ground by one. Duck is subtly bit in his side. Katjaa tends to him for a while over a medical perspective, believing he might possibly be cured, and asks Lee to look for water to give him. On the train Duck starts to cough up blood and Katjaa asks you to wipe his face off with a napkin. Eventually, she realizes that his death is inevitable and asks Lee to tell Kenny. Kenny, on the other hand, angrily denies that Duck is in danger until the very last moment, when he finally accepts Duck's fate.
Kenny and Katjaa agree that they don't want Duck to come back as a walker, so they take him into the woods to say their goodbyes and so that Clementine does not have to watch, but Katjaa can't handle the grief and commits suicide by shooting herself in the head, leaving a devastated Kenny to deal with Duck. walkingdead.wikia.com

Kenny is so well written and performed, dude is just so... human. Times I liked him, feared for him, felt for him, hated him but it was always because of how convincing he was.
I liked Kenny since I first saw him in the game plus Katjaa and Duck as well I liked
He was also our last hope to help everyone out since lee was dead

I know that Katjaa was overcome by grief, but she was still very selfish. Not only does Kenny have to deal with life without his son, but now he doesn't even have a family. This guy's been through hell, both literally and figuratively.
No racism intended, but Katjaa was weaker than Kenny in terms of emotional balance. She just couldnt handle it. In that apocaliptic scenario, everything you do has negative consecuences.

The entire monologue here is just excellent.
The characters are actually behaving like real people (Such as when Kenny is being in denial as this is a parent's worst nightmare) and Lee being a great friend and support through dark and tough times
The music also adds a lot of emotion to the scene.
A real shame that we may never have another great games like those by Tell Talle
Anyone who hates Duck hates kids bruh. Duck was a normal kid, he wasn’t annoying in any way. If you found Duck annoying with his talking, you find kids in general annoying because kids talk a lot and mess around

Though it is painful to see Kenny suffering alone due to Kat committing suicide. But I also can't help but sympathize with her too, she even said that she loved her son more than life itself. As a parent that kind of grief hits hard too hard. I have two boys of my own, I almost lost my youngest to SIDS but we got him to breath again and the pain I felt of the mere thought my sons dying was barely enough for me to bear, I fear I would never be the same if I lost my sons even if I had my husband beside me through the grief.
But I do still love Kenny because despite his losses he never gave up and when he did, it was to sacrifice himself for Clem and AJ

He lost Sarita in S2. Losing Clem and AJ during the Wellington ending would be like him losing the last bit of family he has left, and that would drive him to suicide. There was an unreleased ending in which Kenny drowned himself in a lake.
Even though he dies from walkers in S3, it would mean that he would be with his family again (in the afterlife. If you don't believe in that, then it would mean he would be out of the zombie-infested world that has made life a living hell for a lot of people already).

It is good to see another playthrough where people were brutally honest in the dialogue choices for clementine. Theres no place in their world anymore for sugar coating things for the kids. As harsh as it is the reality of your responses hardens them to be prepared for whats to come as they get older

I understand why Katjaa did what she did, but at the same time it was so selfish because she left Kenny by himself. It would have been hard to deal with Duck's death either way, but if Katjaa was there beside him to also grieve with him.. he would have been at least a bit better. She really didn't have to shoot herself, it was just so sad to watch that :(

@Jlol - duck was a fucking child. he was an innocent 10 year old. he was just trying his best to be happy. he didn’t even do anything when he was bitten. he was pretty much a sad child in an apocalypse covering up with his happy image. any normal child would just break down and cry. he’s just a kid.
@@KazukiVA I like Clementine but let’s be real here. She’s NOT realistically written as a child in Season One. Duck, as annoying as he can be at times, is more of an accurate representation of a child character.
This is still one of the least believable writing decisions in my opinion. THere was never any indication that Katjaa would be this easy tended to commit suicide, and then, out of the sudden...

She did say she lived Duck more than life itself, and it's easy to see her care and concern for him, and it's a natural feeling for a parent to feel hopeless in a situation relating to the death of their own child, not always suicidal, but still hopeless nonetheless.
yeah, but she still had Kenny and even, dare I say it, Clementine. I thought it was obvious that she cared for her.
I don't know, this idea feels more like a tool for Kenny's character development, which is good by the way, but it seems completely backwards for Katjaa.

Yeah, that is true, this decision benefited Kenny more than Katjaa, it is a bit unfortunate for Katjaa's role to be leading up just for her to become a plot point.

while that's true, Duck wasn't infected for that long. It was a spontanious decision. She never showed any indication that there was anything different about her.

Seriously, Kat did a pretty stupid move of ending herself, like she NEVER indicated she was suicidal, sure she has "I love him more than life" but that's still no reason to just end yourself out of nowwhere
Really, she just gave Kenny more reason to fall further into his grief now that he has no family, lost both of them literally in seconds.
Take it from me. Even the most cheerful person could be VERY suicidal, and you wouldn't even know. Some people are just good at hiding the signs, because of many reasons (not wanting to be a burden, or push people away, etc. etc.). That "more than life itself" line only further implies she's been feeling like that for a LONG time since things went to hell. And frankly, I don't blame her or judge her for killing herself. It's way more merciful than getting torn apart by walkers like Kenny ends up being in A New Frontier. She got the better end of the stick.
Some parents just cannot literally function or live without their child. Kenny would not have been enough. I feel she mostly put her all of her life's purpose into ultimately caring for Duck. He was number one, and she is a mother, and when you're a mother, you live for your CHILD (that's generally the case). She wanted to go with Duck, and I cannot or will not blame her. Kenny and everyone else can have their opinion about she chose to exit that horrible cruel world, but honestly, I have nothing but total sympathy for her.

When Lee has to tell the group the truth about himself, the game shows us that Katjaa and Kenny were having a discussion about carrying weapons and that she doesn't like that.
Also, if Lee tells her about what Kenny did in the meatlocker, she would be sad and say that "everything keeps changing"
These 2 factors clearly show that she just wasn't getting accustomed to the apocalypse, she even complains about carrying weapons, cmon.
As a mother, her child is way more important than her husband

I have read the comments and some people say this is unbelievable. I think it is. Kenny is a bag of mixed emotions, he doesn't kill himself because he doesn't know if he wants to. Katjaa is a little more secure and with her mind set on it she doesn't change it. As we know, Kenny hated his family when they where around but once they where dead he knew he loved them. Katjaa must have though she had nothing left to live for and couldn't bear to see her son die.

People say this part was one of the worst deaths. But it is one of the most believable. As a parent you new purpose is to love and protect your children. Katjaa realised this was it, she probably felt like she herself had failed him. Her husband wasn't the same. He wasn't who she married. After he killed Larry she saw him differently "everything just keeps changing". Duck was the only pure thing. And she didn't want to die the way he did - long and drawn out. Her death was deeper than duck dying
I cried real tears from shooting duck and also when he said what if he doesn't turn and isn't there a pill we can give him because he didn't want duck to die, a parent should never have to see their child die

right after this train got running, Russell was on the road a week or couple weeks later, and the first 400 days survivors were just coming into the same area that Lee and Kenny and the group were in. If Lee and the group had stayed in the area, then Carvers group would have eventually found his group and tried to recruit them.

Anyone else think its odd that they didn't let Clem say goodbye to duck? Also they made Kenny into an understandably asshole in the sequel.
Personally the one thing I would've changed in this scene is the option to let Clementine say goodbye. She was best friends with Duck and was the one who hung out with him the most. Im not saying she had to be there at his 'Mercy killing" (execution? What would u guys call it?) because duh she's only six and this is at the start of the zombie apocalypse so six year olds are ur typical one unlike AJ who in Season 4 is canonical five but acts as if hes ten or twelve. I think it would've been sweet to let Lee give the option of Clem saying goodbye before Katjaa and Kenny took him away.
