It's time for a new mission - recreating the Pathfinder nuclear space shuttle from For All Mankind in RSS/RO! Was quite the tricky task, it's practically a SSTO. But technically feasible! I hope you enjoy. Sea Dragon is also here, the mightiest Sea-launched rocket ever designed!
Disclaimer: No lunar-rated spaceplane parts exist in RO. "Ignore max temp" cheat was used. Pathfinder can safely re-enter from LEO without it.

Hey all! Decided to try out another mission recreation, this time from For All Mankind, hope you enjoy!
A big thank you to Star Trek Timelines for sponsoring this video, Click on the link and download the official Star Trek Game: sttlink.onelink.me/Z8Hp/ytsf
Factual mistake at the end: Sea Dragons 1st stage can gimbal, its the second stage that can't. The TVC engines do remain on from liftoff to orbit though.
damn he got his first sponsor
I love For all Mankind and Im sure this is going to be the coolest recreation!
I can’t fucking believe you got Star Trek to sponsor you, mr Trek nerd.
Hey, Could you make Sojourner from season 3??
USS enterprise recreation wen
"Ready for the integral flight of the most badass nuclear rocket to ever grace this God's green earth?"
hi you are creating prety good mods
Cool, since you're making For All Mankind videos now, can you do one where you name a kerbal Danny and use a mass driver to launch him into the sun?
Danny, first attempted murder on mars
agree 👍🏻

The fact that you're doing all of this in RSS/RO makes the video even more impressive than it already is!
an air launched space shuttle powered by 8 NERVAs escorting the worlds largest upper stage is the most ksp thing ever
Wait, after all these years….
A TD CHANNEL SEA DRAGON!
Oh you just know this one is gonna be good! I loved that Pathfiner launch scene in FAM
how in the fuck did I find you twice.
That "TASK FAILED SUCCESSFULLY" killed me
Idk, a nuclear space shuttle seems like a terrible idea to me...
Great video ;)
It might be a terrible ideas, but cool ideas that just barely work are perfect for KSP!
Thank you :)
They use the jet engines on Pathfinder to fly ahead of the carrier plane and maintain flight without having to glide. Also used to help with fuel ullage. And I think the wings aren’t thick enough.
what a bootiful orbiter design, makes me miss the space shuttles
Hi Bob!
Hi Bob!
Hi Bob!
Hi Bob!
Keep the likes the same keep mine at 1
If only season 2 was as good as what you produce here on this channel. Good work, and congrats on the sponsor!
I'm losing my mind over the sheer beauty of your work
Holy hell dude, that was one hell of a recreation there mate!
the Pathfinder from the show had two turbo ramjets that were ignited on separation from the C-5 carrier plane, it would propel them up to a high altitude, then ignite the NERVA engine
Ah I see, that actually makes sense. Didn't see it on the show, but explains how it's able to takeoff.
(though I didn't have enough mass ratio left for the weight of jets in this build)
@@TDChannelKSP well, makes sense to me
@@TDChannelKSP yeah igniting nuclear engines in atmosphere doesn’t sound safe AT ALL
@@joshuaashton1929my space program does it every time, however gene is starting to turn purple and wants to go to Eve for some reason
Great Kerbal Film ! Really appreciate the work you put in your videos!
Love the party carrier at the end XD
This is Pathfinder the Space Shuttle. And this is the Sea Dragon.
8:59 Nice touch, recreating one of those distinctive zoom shots from the show.
Thanks! From BSG to FAM, there's always some interesting CGI camera work done with it.
Hell yeah, havent watched FAM but still wanna see the big shuttle do brrr to the Moon!
Watch it, you'll love the space ships and stuff! (It's not fully "realistic" but whatever it's in a different world.)

Amazing editing, -wonderful- EPIC video! My only niggle is that the C-5 is going to have a few yaw control issues with a burnt-off rudder!
Edit: Just got to the end where you explain it all. Fair enough reasoning!
absolutely amazing
This is Beautiful.
Awesome video! Congrats on those long deserved 10k subs! I’m liking this new “style” of video, not being terminal velocity over and over again, that’s still fun to watch but I like this more. I had a lot of fun watching this! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Aye - this content definitely seems more broadly appealing as well. I still like Terminal Velocity, but I'll be looking to wrap up the series within a few months.
Oh I always know you loved Trek! Since you named every missions in Terminal Velocities with Trek characters!
His discord PFP is also some Star Trek ship!
Well done TD. Love FaM, and you recreating missions from the show will have me hyped for a good long time 😎 Any news on the return of Terminal Velocity?
Thanks! Heh, we'll see how this video does, might do more.
Terminal Velocity will still continue - I'm hoping to get at least 1 episode done per month at minimum, however I am hoping to wrap the series up overall by end of year.
Outstanding work!
Thank you! :)
(by the way, your discord invite links are invalid)
Really good video TD!!
BTW, in FAM, didn't Sea Dragon launch before Patjfinder was released from the C-5?
Can't wait!

Glad to hear your voice again, even if it was just for the sponsored segment. Great video!
Heh, good to know someone does like it :) perhaps I'll do other properly voice-overed content in the future, particularly tutorial series.
Congrats on the sponsorship !
I think that Pathfinder might have used atmosphere instead of onboard fuel for the first phase of its nuclear flight, thus largely reducing the amount of fuel required to reach orbit
Thank you for the video
This was really cool, especially the Show vs Reality section. I knew Pathfinder had impulse density problems, but not to what extent.
Also random question, what was the Pathfinder separation velocity? I read a NASA doc that suggested 3km/s for optimal sizing
Assuming you mean the separation between C5 and Pathfinder, about 200 m/s or so. 3 km/s requires a rocket carrier plane, or something like Skylon.
@@TDChannelKSP Maybe British airways has one to spare.
Congrats on 10k subscribers
Thank you :)
Well i guessed it somewhat right
Thanks!
For all mankind is my favorite show and even NASA’s new Axiom suits are made by the lead suit designer from the show!!!!!!
Ima do this recreation but in Juno: New origins!!!
Cool@!
While I don't like FAM due to me being a space nerd seeking realism a lot more than drama, I absolutely appreciate your work you've put into this video. While it's cool to fly those entire huge and heavy shuttles to the Moon, it's terribly inefficient in terms of mass. Still wondering how the hell am I supposed to believe Buran somehow got to the Moon while looking basically the same as its real life counterpart. I get it, it's just a show that needs the cool factor more than realism, because that's what get them some views.
It's not just the Buran, they fly the normal real-life based Space Shuttle to Lunar orbit in the show as well.
Fantastic work!
Something JUST occurred to me...wouldn't the ignition of the NERVA engines of the nuclear shuttle irradiate the crew of the carrier aircraft, the crew of the lower stage of a TSTO launch vehicle, etc.?
I don't think the creators of "For All Mankind" took that into account...
(Of course, I've ALWAYS thought that carrying the extra weight of wings on ANY spacecraft operating beyond LEO is just dumb - just IMHO).
Thanks!
Yeah, that would be an issue. Some people have pointed out the SABRE-looking engines could be airbreathing engines meant to boost the vehicle away from the C-5 and accelerate before NERVA ignition.
In the show it just sorta floated off the C-5 nicely to gain distance away from the carrier before engine ignition.
Hey,amazing video, could you do sojourner 1 next from for all manking
And the fact that this is done in RSS/RO too
I saw this in the ksp discord :D
Which Mode die you use
For Exemplar the buildings
120 tons of LH2 has a volume of 1,700 m^3 (5.5 times the cargo bay of the shuttle). What kind of supercooled LH2 are you using?
also is the LASM OR ODS have the Apollo style Docking sys?
you MUST recreate Sojourner 1.
Anyway isn’t pathfinder a bit dangerous? Flying over US soil with a nuclear device onboard ready to explode?
Very very good recreation.

Can you recreate sojourner 1 and Mars 94 ref fueling scene with it that would be amazing

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Got the HD crew cabin and most bare looking body
That’s kinda funny
this is really cool! by any chance would it be possible for you to do the space race with russia, the us and the private company?
If you want to make this better, I suggest using the SPOCK mod, it gives parts that are made to create the Pathfinder shuttle!
Yup, very cool mod. Sadly wasn't released at the time I made the video, but it's fun that it exists now!
Maybe you should recreate this video with the SPOCK mod it would be 10x better
How the heck do you have waterfall on those Sea Dragon engines, what config did you use?! I can only find a dead link to a deleted GitHub page.

So The Space Shuttle Was Nuclear And Arrived On Time.
I wonder, could Pathfinder work at least to LEO with the available propellant volume in the wings if instead of hydrogen, it used a different, denser propellant (e.g. methane) for the NTR? Methane drops the specific impulse by a third or so, but it is about 6 times as dense as hydrogen, so you get about four times as much impulse per volume.
Hmm, I'd have to work it out but I'm not sure. The density would certainly help, but Pathfinder effectively needs SSTO-levels of delta-v, around 8.8 km/s or so.
Would probably need a new carrier aircraft - LH2 Pathfinder already pushes the limits of a C5, CH4 Pathfinder would need one of those crazy-looking double fuselage AN-225s or something.
@@TDChannelKSP If the show configuration would fit 60 tons of LH2, it would fit 360 tons of LCH4, which with 50 tons empty mass pushes ln(m1/m0) (with no payload) from 0.79 to 2.1, and thus the needed v_e for 8.8 km/s ∆v down from 11.2 km/s, which is out of reach of any solid-core NTR, to just 4.2 km/s, which would absolutely be in reach of a solid-core methane (or even methanol, if coking from methane propellant is a serious concern) NTR.
Of course, as you said, quadrupling the launch mass does pose an issue regarding both the carrier aircraft, and also requiring quite a bit more reactor power to maintain the same liftoff TWR.
Using NASA's CEA tool to calculate the performance of a CH4 NTR with 100 atm chamber pressure, 3000 K core temp and a nozzle area ratio of 100, I get 5.6 km/s vacuum exhaust velocity, which would achieve 8.8 km/s delta-V at a quite reasonable mass ratio of 4.8, meaning the 50 ton empty mass/360 ton fuel Pathfinder would be able to carry ~40 tons of payload into LEO.
how did you synchronize their tli burns when you can only control one craft at a time?
Burn Together mod.
@@TDChannelKSP wow. So either the pathfinders engines or the sea dragons engines were throttleable or you somehow managed to get the same twr for both, right?
@@overloader6726 Yup. Sea Dragon engine ended up throttling (it doesn't have an official RO config, so it throttles like normal KSP engines)
Wen Mars 94
Mars-94 is an odd duck. SSTOing from Earth to Mars is... quite something. Might take a stab at the Season 3 vehicles some day though.
I like Pathfinder the most though.
@@TDChannelKSP Mars 94 doesn’t even show any landers or hab modules, that one is difficult because you don’t know the mission profile (but I would say it’s easier because that means you can make your own mission plan, for example you could say Mars 94 landed on pluto before returning to earth **wink wink** because we don’t know the details). And the SSTO part is difficult too because you have to have enough thrust to lift off of earth with NTR.
@@TDChannelKSP
If I'm not mistaken, FAM's NASA's Mars mission starts from the Moon not Earth, though that's quite a trip anyway and that bigger-sized shuttle seems very tricky to recreate. Helios built their gigantic ship in orbit, we don't know all the stuff on it either and it must leave a lot of freedom to recreate it too. The soviet one is the one we know the least about, so it would leave the most artistic freedom, though it should take off from Earth's surface with NTRs...
@@fork9001
There are some modules shown but not all and no detail on how the stuff already on Mars was sent so there's room for a lot I think too!
@@CraftYourDreamLB59 Yup. From what we heard there were no Soviet bases on Mars so they probably brought base modules and mining equipment with them.

То чувство когда игрок посмотрел 2й сезон сериала Ради всего человечества и решил повторить это в игре
For all Kerbalkind
its all fun and games until the nuclear engines fail on ignition
Also wasn't pathfinder just launched horizontally and not in a sort of parabolic trajectory as shown here?
Correct! I mention that at the end. There's a few problems:
1: Pathfinder is *heavy* and doesn't fly that well. Even in real life, an empty shuttle needs to pitch up quite a bit from a 747 in a dive to gain separation. There's no way for it to gracefully float upwards like in the show, you need a fast dive with a rather dramatic pull up.
2: This introduces issues - you're in a dive now, deeper into the atmosphere, and you need to halt that descent and pitch up to vertical. This takes a pretty good chunk of fuel to do - much more than I have. Pathfinder as an SSTO already has razor thin payload margins as is.
3: It also introduces ullage issues, with drag causing all the fuel to go forward, so igniting the NTRs is tricky.
By doing a steep climb, you retain vertical velocity, making it a much more efficient ascent.
SO that is how they did it. how they used shuttle/shuttle 2 to get to the moon. ever thought about using a SLS Core size ET? to put shuttle block one into Trans-Lunar? and Skylab was in a 51.1 degree orbit NOT a 28.5. does this mission profile use the same type of lunar orbit as the Gateway is going to have?
I don't believe the larger SLS 1B tank would be enough to send the shuttle on trans-lunar trajectory by itself - a 30% fuel increase is sadly not a 30% delta-v increase. Normal shuttle in particular is pretty heavy (around 80 tons dry)
While true that OTL Skylab was in a different inclination, it was mentioned in FAM using Skylab as a refueling stop for shuttle 1.0 (shuttle 2.0 just magically flies direct to the moon), perhaps with this purpose in mind Skylab was placed at lunar inclination.
FAM didn't provide much detail on the lunar orbit, so I settled with an equatorial low circular orbit, since the encounter between Buran and Pathfinder seem to happen close to the Moon. With refueling, Pathfinder can easily do any orbit, or even land.
Can you try make ferry rocket?
land the mercury rocket on mercury

Я не понял прикол с бураном. И зачем вообще нужен был sea dragon если его уничтожили? Бригаду
Hi. Using google translate to read this message since I don't speak Russian...
The events are based on the alt-history TV show "For All Mankind". Here's the context:
- Spoiler alert! -
In the show, the USSR uses a weaponized version of Buran to "blockade" the Moon, to stop Sea Dragon from delivering its nuclear payload to the lunar surface.
If Buran destroys Sea Dragon, or Pathfinder destroys Buran, WW3 starts. So, the commander of Pathfinder decides to shoot down Sea Dragon, ending the standoff. Its destruction is blamed on mechanical failure, and USA-USSR tensions lower after that.
WTF???
