  • In this video, I show you how to blend two images in Inkscape. Inkscape is a free vector graphics editor but you can still use it to combine bitmap images such as photos. In this simple tutorial, I show you how to smoothly blend two photos to create one image.
In the first example, I merge two skyline photos together using a mask to create a smooth transition between the images...
and in the second example, I demonstrate how to blend two images using a clipping mask and feathering to soften the edges. I use blend modes to better match the two images - in this case, a car and an image of a desert road. I create a shadow for the car by drawing a path and adjusting it’s blur and opacity.
Inkscape is not the best software for working with bitmap images, but with it’s broad range of features and functions it still does a good job. This is great if you want to combine bitmap images with vector graphics but only want to learn to use one software package.
In this video I use the Bezier tool to create my paths then I adjust them using the nodes tool, if you would like to learn more on this topic then I recommend that you watch this video:

In this tutorial, I’m using the latest version of Inkscape - Inkscape 1.2.1

you're so clever at this stuff and so helpful sharing what you know and very good at teaching it makes all of this easy to follow where so many others always leave bits of vital info out which may well be because they know how to do it but fail to remember newbies wouldnt know it seems you cover everything that will make our images as fab as yours

Love the tutorial. i am so glad I found your videos! I am just confused. i did the same thing as you and everything just stayed red once I went around the imagine. I can't figure out how to switch the red to the original image clipped.

You should have the clipping path on top of the image you want to clip, then select the clipping path, hold down shift and select the image (so both should now be selected) then go to Object - Clip - Set Clip and you should be left with the clipped section of the image. I have had it play up before, so if it doesn't work try opening up a fresh document and try to clip a simple shape.

Any chance of you doing a video clicking each button and explaining while watching what each is for. Then build to building using 2 features etc.. hope you understood that..
Through watching your videos I'm slowly getting the hang of it but it's the tech names that is stopping my progress.

I know what you mean, sometimes the terms used make things seem more complicated than they actually are, but many of the names used are used in other programs too, so its good to learn some of them if you can.
In the first video I made, I went through many of the tools and simple functions, it's a little slow paced but you may find it helpful. I've put a link to a playlist below so you can look through. If there is something in particular that would be helpful, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

If I have time in the future, I will definitely look into them. Be good to create some tutorial for other software packages - I do seem to have got stuck on Inkscape!

can you print this image after the blending?

    • @CreateForFree

You can either export your finished image and then print it or print the page straight from Inkscape - you will need to make sure your image in the correct position on you page before printing.

Inkscape is primarily a vector graphics editor, so it is good to have some capability to manipulate photos but other programs will do it better.
