- We've just released Padlocked, an extraordinary Lockout Lines-themed Sudoku Hunt, on Patreon. You can join us on Patreon here:
/ crackingthecryptic
($2 a month for puzzles, $3 a month for puzzles and solution videos).
This week's puzzles have all seemed have virtually no information in them. Today's really takes the biscuit. RockyRoer's Sunflower has no digits, no cage totals and ambiguous kropki dots. It's not likely to be easy :) Give it a try at the following link:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Cells separated by a knight's move (in chess) cannot contain the same digit. Digits in each cage sum to the same total, which must be deduced. Cells separated by an orange dot contain digits that are either consecutive or in a 1:2 ratio (or both).
Sam Cappleman-Lynes has made an extremely clever 6x6x6 set of puzzles. We have released a solution video for this puzzle on Patreon and you can try to solve it yourself at these links (one to our software, one to penpa (which allows you to increase the size of the grids):

PS We've managed to reach 400,000 subscribers - thanks so much to everyone who has joined us on this journey. We'll be releasing a celebration video where Mark and Simon answer community questions shortly!

▶ABOUT US◀
Hi! We're Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, two of the UK's most enthusiastic puzzle solvers. We have both represented the UK at the World Sudoku Championships and the World Puzzle Championships.
Thank you for watching!
Simon and Mark
Just FYI, your "Extensive amount of explaining" is the reason why I watch these videos every day.
agree!
Same
Same!
Same!!!!!!
I know rightt
"I have no idea how are we gonna solve it."
"Anyway, do have a go.'
Let's see... Simon has no idea... over an hour long on the video... I think I'm just going to sit back and enjoy watching him figure it out.
🤣🤣🤣😳🤦🏼♀️
Yeah...
Saw the length, and whipped up a banana bread.
Gonna eat while I watch.
The odds of me getting ANYWHERE with this puzzle are between zero and none.
🤣
5:00
I don’t know if it was a barb at you, Simon, but your extensive explanations are greatly appreciated by me. I’ve learned so very much listening and working along. Lately, I’ve paused and moved forward on puzzles and frequently see the same logic that you see when I resume watching. Your verbosity is greatly appreciated!
I'm sure it was not meant as a barb at all. I think he just wanted to make it clear that he's confident that you could do the puzzle *much* quicker if it wasn't for the extra work you do to explain your logic to the audience.
I am also confident it was meant to distinguish 'time Simon would need to solve this' vs. 'to solve this on the channel, explaining as he goes'. Those explanations are at the heart of the channel and are much-loved. I know I only turn off the sound when I play 'I'll give myself a headstart, and see how long until the master finds something I haven't seen yet', which is an occasionally enjoyable game. Keep up the verbiage!
Simon's explanations are likely the single most important factor for this channel's continued growth.
"The Sudoku With Zero Given Digits" Doesn't narrow it down much these days lol
Yeah was going to say, feels like the wrong choice of article...
(That said I get why, the titled are definitely tailored towards catching the eye of newcomers seeing videos via the recommendation algorithm, to whom that distinction is more likely to be notable than to subscribers who've seen such things before...)
@@HunterJE Yea, I don't begrudge them their slightly clickbaity titles.
Only reason I'm here was a title saying something about knight sudoku that I saw about 18 months ago, and I was like, "WTF is that?"
Now I've MADE a bunch of Sudoku with zero given digits and even invented a few different rules of my own.
True, but there was no digits of any kind here, no cage sums, little killers etc, probably what they ment
They'll progress through "Yet Another Sudoku With Zero Given Digits" and end up on "Just Another Sudoku With Zero Given Digits"
Well done, sir! Your extensive explanations and elation when closing in on the solution are what makes you so watchable. Please don’t ever change.
ditto
Me shouting at Simon when he colored r4c6 green when he just finished saying it could be a 1 (which would be blue): “That’s going to be confusing later on…”
Simon 5 minutes later: “Why is this cell green? Why can’t it be a 1? Have I lost my marbles?”
Me: “I told you! Lol” 😂
I made this reply on another comment, in real-time as I watched that moment: "Like at 56:03 you remember better than he did that he himself had JUST colored as green as a potential example, not as definitive?! 56:38 NO YOU DIDN'T, SIMON! IT WAS JUST AN IF-THIS-WERE-GREEN-AND-LET'S-CHECK-IF-IT-CAN-BE-OR-NOT, FROM 53:40!!! THREE MINUTES AGO, DURING WHICH TIME YOU DIDN'T EVEN GO OFF TO A DIFFERENT PART OF THE SUDOKU, SO HOW DID YOU IMMEDIATELY FORGET?!?!?! ARRRGHHGJJFJDJJSNDNCNCNMF"
wow, some people get very animated about these videos.
I felt so bad for him at that moment haha.
I appreciate that Simon continues his coloring long after it stops being needed. I'm always curious how the coloring will look when fully expanded.
he did need to split the cage colours up, the 18 and 27 would have opened the puzzle
It makes me dizzy which is a minor problem. A larger one is that it slows Simon down and he misses easy things. The good thing is that Simon likes colouring and a happy Simon is a joy to watch.
Even if it’s long I love the “extensive amount of explaining” it’s very helpful
I love predicting Simon's color choices. Nailed it today with purple, blue, green, then orange.
I wouldve said Yellow instead of Orange 💔
@@martinap863 I got it all but I guessed red instead of orange!
With phrases like "where does red trim go in this box" we see Simon's coloring has become even crazier than was though possible
Any more and you'd think he was an interior decorator.😋
I'm going to use that idea in other, less complicated puzzles.
Love your “extensive explaining”. It is what makes this channel great.
I come for the usual extensive amount of explaining.
"Simon Anthony, take a Gin and Tonic" gave me a good chuckle. Fantastic solve, Simon!
Considering he records early in the day... Epic.
@@amoswittenbergsmusings You have to admit, it was a well-earned gin and tonic.
I watch these videos Because Of the extensive amounts of explaining, so keep it up Simon! The explaining helps me see new ways of doing things and shows me why they work. Plus it makes a longer video, which I enjoy immensely.

FAQ:
Q1: What is a Simarkism?
A1: A Simarkism is something that Simon and Mark typically or frequently say.
Q2: How do you do this so fast?
A2: I'm not made of flesh and blood, but of sand ...
Q3: Why don't you include 'XX' and 'YY'?
A3: Probably it's already on the list ('Scooby-Doo' for example), but not mentioned in this video. But if you think it's not, tell me what you'd like me to include and there's a good chance I'll add it!
Q4: You missed 'XX' at 'YY:ZZ'!
A4: That could very well be the case! Human speech is hard to understand for computers like me, especially British sometimes! Point out the ones that I missed and maybe I'll learn!
Q5: Could you turn these statistics into videos?
A5: I've been playing around with the idea and I'm open to input as to what people would like to see. Let me know if you are interested in this and/or have suggestions.
Not even one 'beautiful'?! This puzzle must be rubbish! 🤣
This is insane. Great job Computer San(d).
Thanks for this! I get really frustrated listening to the introduction. As much care as Simon puts into it, I prefer to skip straight to the puzzle.
Hey Sand! Since you have the "get cracking" part, it would be nice if you could also catch the completion at czcams.com/video/le1pe4WMGZY/video.html (1:09:50) and allow some statistics for the solve time/difficulty. We need to persuade them to say a keyword then? I don't see the timer on screen, but it would be nice if the popup actually included the time instead of only saying "stopped".
Another thing possibly interesting to catch is longer segments of silence.
Q: What do you use as an example is Scooby-Doo *is* in the video?
A long video just means it's entertaining for longer. Don't worry too much about it being longer than most videos.
I must be getting better at these difficult ones because I find myself yelling at the screen. "What you are looking for is right there!". Equally frustrating is when Simon then realizes it and takes it a step further than I did in terms of logic or he solves it in some superwhammidine way.
I'm watching him do it, and I don't know how he did it!
40:07 - ...if r4c12 are orange and r6c89 are purple, r34c8 have no color! So neither r6c4 can't be be blue! Simples! He just had to check what color could r34c8 be if that were the case, not r89c4! I'm not sure how it helps, but would at least finish that thought he had about r6c4 being blue or not and help rule it not-blue! Edit - combined with 45:44, it rules blue out of both r6c4 and r6c6!
Now that I've gone over it a few times, I think I've cast aspersions on the innocent...bobbins.
After Simon proves that c5r89, c5r12 have to be a solid domino color, he goes on to fill in the numbers. He never quite turns the puzzle 90 degrees to see the rule also applies to r5c12 and r5c89. When he finds the 8 by cropkey dot (r7c7) I realized that a knight's move prevented the 8 from residing in r5c8 and thus disambiguating the colors in that domino. However, the 8 can escape to c9! He marks it but I totally missed it.
I was still with him most of the way but my leap of logic could've gotten me into trouble if the 8 had been in c9 all along and the domino blue.
Sorry Simon.
I am feeling immensely proud of myself for *watching* an hour plus sudoko.
How proud must you feel for *solving* it in the same time!
Lots of respect mate! And thanks for the verbose explanations.
An easier way of ruling Blue out of r6c6 at 46:14 is "Where can Blue go in R4?" This is also true for r6 and orange, c4 with purple, and c6 with green.
Yep… that was the intended question to consider. :-)
46:20 yay! he saw it in the edit. 👍
@@dibenp i also lost my mind at that moment
Even Maverick knew how hard this one was, didn’t want to be a distraction today.
i was about to sing "i can be brown, I can be blue, I can be violet sky" when simon is coloring the 4 mid boxes
@40:08 the logic about pairs in the remaining white cells does apply to row 5. The logic didn't require the kropki dots to work
36:17 solved for me. I can't believe I'm able to solved this half of Simon time!
I think he could have done it quicker but got caught up in coloring instead of sudoku. I wasn't able to finish this one at all, LOL.
i love how attached you got to the colors after an hour of solving the puzzle based on colors. Great solve!
My coloring was 8-color: I used red-orange for one domino, yellow-green for a second, blue-purple for a third, and the two greys (light and dark) for the fourth ... and black for the last digit. Worked well for me.
I think Simon would've made progress faster had he used 8 colors
Dude, that was awesome. 69:30. Pretty happy about that actually. The funniest thing about this puzzle is that I coloured it WAAAAAY more than Simon!
Zero digits is a lot for these puzzles
Next time, we need to have negative amount of digits!
It was an extensive amount of digits.
@@ritchards I'm really worried now someone's going to find a bizarre ruleset soon to make negative amounts of digits. Taken digits?
Yay - a feature length video !! Putting this off till later - when I can watch with 🍿 and 🍷 !! 😄
32:10 missed opportunity to say "discombobbinated" :)
Aka Simon and The Recalcitrant Kropki Dot.
The extensive amount of explaining is one of the reasons I watch your videos, please continue!
I trust Simon to reveal everything to me. If he said: "In my next magic rick I will reveal how Quantum theorie and Gravity work together" I am certain he will win the Nobel Prize:
My best idea for that: The Planklength is not invariable :D and Gravitation is only a Part of a bigger More variable Interactions :D
Tried it myself along with you. Messed up four times before finishing, and had to watch a little bit further each time to get tips. I think I've done less than five sudokus in my life, so I wasn't surprised that I'd make desperate erroneous deductions. But it was still surprisingly fun and addicting to play. Thanks for sharing!
At 43:40, a simpler way to prove that R3C6 and R6C6 can not be blue is considering that this forces R3C5 and R6C6 to be the same digit, which breaks R4 of the puzzle, since that digit can not appear in it: in fact, R6C6 sees R4C7 by knight's move and R4C6 and R4C4 by sudoku, while R3C5 sees R4C3 by knight's move. Btw, you and Mark are doing a massive job here on Cracking the Cryptic, and i'm happy to say to you what you told Aad in the previous video: take a bow!
Jacopo from Italy
I enjoy the explanations. They are helping me tackle harder puzzles.
This is the first over hour long solve I was able to solve completely without watching parts of the video for help. Yay for me.
Word bubbles with parenthetical notes are amazing. Would absolutely love to see either Simon or Mark add commentary to their own or each other's videos. 😀
I absolutely love your explanations. It has really helped me as a solver.
73:39 but so happy to have finished it.
It took me ages to figure out that r8c5 and r8c6 had to match either (r5c3 and r5c4) or (r5c6 and r5c7)
Then I could see that only one of the three possible cage totals had two combinations to match the kropki dot pairs.
Now I get to watch Simon work his magic.
Bravo Rocky and Simon!
42:05 for me. I forgot to post it, i just guessed once
This solve was absolutely brilliant to watch. The minute you said the dominoes had to be 9, 10, or 11, I immediately realised it was 9, paused the video, and figured out the top and bottom kropkis straight away.
Then I got as far as the initial 8 and got stuck for 20 minutes before giving up and coming back to watch you do it.
Almost two hours but i managed to do it myself! Whew, so proud. I can feel my wits has expanded so much thanks to this channel and thanks to all your marvellous and patient explanations, Simon! There was a time I wouldn't have even attempted such sudoku...
That might be the best hour plus I have spent on the internet in a very long time, Maybe ever! Thank you Simon. Thank you Cracking the Cryptic.
Back in the day, prevailing wisdom was that a sudoku had to start with about 17 digits. Then CtC arrived on the scene. After some time, "a sudoku with only 4 given digits" was considered to be extraordinary, but solvable. A month ago, "a sudoku with zero given digits" was considered to be extraordinary, but solvable. Today, sudokus with zero given digits are being solved every day.
Truly, we live in remarkable times.
This was by far the hardest Sudoku I have ever solved. I haven't done too many but I have a feeling that even if I had this would top them all.
Without your channel, the tutorials I took in as entertainment, and an extensive use of the coloring system, I would never have made it. Kudos to my wife for helping out as well. She keeps me grounded and stops me from going too far down rabbit trails.( She also makes me tidy up my colors all the time, which helps tremendously. Don't tell her I said that.)
That was absolutely magnificent
Great puzzle, great solve! Love the fact that such a beautiful solution can come from such a beautiful picture. Like the solve is about as pretty as the alignment of the cages themselves
I've got to say that your channel single-handedly made me fond of sudokus. It's very pleasing following you along
40:17 This chain of logic actually does rule out blue being in that square. The cage in row 6 would be purple, the cage in column 2 would be green, that causes the cage in row 4 to be orange, and now the cage in column 8 is broken. So you could have ruled out that one box slightly earlier, though it wouldn't have helped you solve the puzzle any faster.
Never apologise for long videos, Simon! My excitement level rises the longer the video is 😊
50:20 Quicker way to IDing this blue domino (and indeed the three rotationally equivalent dominoes) is to note that its row already has yellow, pink, and green and there's an orange domino in the box...
40:48 you were almost there weren't you? You were about to get an orange clash in row 4, thus proving the blue couldn't go in R6C4.
Glad I wasn't alone. I could not be certain that I wasn't kidding myself. If I was, that would make at least two of us 😂
@@amoswittenbergsmusings Yeah, he gave up 3/4s of the way through the logic.
If I remember correctly that particular bit wouldn't have got him very far, but if he'd applied it to one of the other reflections he'd have deduced something about the kropki cell in R4C6.
Watching your videos really helps me through tough days. My dad and I are currently in an argument and watching you has kept me sane
I dont know if other people find it annoying, but I personally enjoy Simon's "Extensive amount of explanations".
When I started watching this channel, I couldn't finish even the easiest Sudokus i found. Now, Im able to do "Expert" lvl sudoku in the app I play and I can even efficiently do those 16x16 Numbers and Letters Sudokus that the app has. I love this channel a lot, and while I know that I personally am not at the lvl Simon is in able to complete all these wonderful puzzles these people make, I hope to continue watching and learning from him for years to come!
i figured by observing that the middle 4 dominoes have to be 1,8 ; 2,7 ; 3,6 ; 4,5, since these and all the othr dominoes have to be the same sum.
and only way to make that is if you do the highest total, you can add those by taking the lowest and highest available at the time. feel like you could
have gotten that idea at the start too. it was very close. love the solving!!!
In 5 minutes I figured out that the cage total is somewhere between 7 and 13. Not sure I can get much farther than that. Maybe I'll add up the cages next.
I'm proud to say, I managed a time of 34:02 on this one. My solve path involved a _lot_ of multicolored tiles.
That was incredible. I love how you take the time to walk through every step logically. Incredible solve!
What a beautifully looking masterpiece this was, thanks RockyRoer! ♥ A few weeks ago I only attempted videos which were around 30 min long. Being able to solve this without Simon's help feels like a huge achievement for me, even if it took me hours.^^
At just over 93 minutes I am clocking in at 1.0333 estimated Simons (or 1.3098 actual Simons)
At 41:00, an easier way to break through is to think about column 6 in relation to column 4. We know that both blue cells in box 2 are in row 3, and both blue cells in box 5 are in row 4 (because the blue cell in the cage in box 2 can only go in box 5 in row 4, joining its partner in that row.) But because there is a kropki dot in column 6, we cannot have two blue digits in those two cells. 1-8 is not a valid combination for white or black kropki dots. Therefore, there is definitely at least one blue in column 4, and therefore the cage at the bottom of column 4 is not blue.
Still a great solve, Simon! I actually managed to beat your time today, but I think only because I don't have to stop and explain things to an audience. I love your videos!
I love how you explain while playing, cus I'm from Brazil and it's amazing to understand everything you thought while solving puzzles
"We've achieved a great deal of colouring." Often a sign of a good day.
Honestly the resources (like colour coordinated explanations) on this channel give me the push needed to go from stuff like puzzler magazine to harder and more abstact forms of sudoku and I couldn't be more grateful!!
As someone who has only solved regular sudokus in the past, this was an insane step up in difficulty! It took me between 3 to 4 hours... But oh boy was it satisfying when things started falling into place!
Edit: I watched the video now. This man is a wizard. Bravo.
Wow, what a puzzle. Really elegant and superbly set up. Absolutely one of the best i've seen lately. And Simon solve, wow! Must feel good to be that capable. Your proudness and gin tonic are totally deserved!
didnt expect myself to be watching a puzzle master beat a sudoku with no digits while shiny hunting in pokemon with a 70's japanese jazz playlist on at 10:07 at night on a saturday
i wouldnt have it any other way
falling in love with this content
I don't think anyone would have a go about your explanations; they are more likely to be in awe of your ability to do both at the same time. Outstanding solve of an outstanding puzzle.
Getting better at these, actually attempting a puzzle with a 1 hour video is one thing. But I actually finished it! Goodliffed the crap out of the colors, but it worked well.
Decades from now the verb Goodliffe will be used and few people will know why.
@@gackmcshite4724 The term is in the Urban Dictionary.
@@gackmcshite4724 I had a moment in this puzzle where I had a green-purple virtual quadruple and I just sorta got up from my computer for a little bit
Think of the future translator who will tumble on a “goodliffing » in a casual dialogue and never know what hit them. 😅
i know this video is old so you probably on't see this but this was the first non-GAS puzzle i attempted... it took me 211 min... thanks for all you do i love it
I almost want a print of that solve to hang on a wall, what a piece of art with the way you've colored it!
I spent a very long time proving you couldn't three-colour the dominos before remembering the knights move.
Absolutely nuts, zero digits and that rule set. 8) nice solve 👌
With a grid that symmetrical, the middle square not being 5 was honestly one of the biggest surprises I've seen on this channel
I started this video 3 days ago now. And I'm happy to be able to finish watching it now after finally solving it after 3 days of thinking over it. It's fascinating to watch how relatively easily you handled this puzzle compared to myself. I didn't use all the same logic and I had to resort to using chains, which I know you don't like, but I'm still happy that I was at least able to get through the solve.
Fantastic puzzle. Thanks Simon for your explanations! I’ve learnt so much from you :)
Beautiful Symmetry! [I will admit, as a fellow math educator, I tend to bask in the reflected glory of Rocky Roer's creations.]
Somehow I saw the editing explanation that Simon provided right away. I was literally screaming for 10 minutes “Simon please ask the question: where does blue go in row 4. It has to be inside box 5”.
even easier than your edit, where does the second blue go in row 4. The blue in column 5 rules blue out of r4,c3 and r4,c7 by knights move. The other blue in row 4 must be in box 5. Similar logic can be done with the orange in row 7
You can actually take this a little bit further. If you pair this with the fact that the blue in R4,C5 can only go in one of two places in R3(C4 or C6), then you can say that at least one of them has to be in C4 (since they both can't be on the cropki dot, then either one or both blues will need to be in C4) which rules blue or of the blue/green cage in box 8.
I thought that was an easier deduction than what Simon did, but both end the same way
Amazing puzzle. Here is how I did the difficult part at 46:00. If r6c6 is blue then box 6 tells us it has to be 8. Then the cage in column 2 is green, the cage in column 8 is orange, and the cage in row 4 has no fill.
What a wonderful puzzle and solve! You can get the blue pair locked into r4 of the central box because you can get 4 blues locked into boxes 4 and 6 r5 and r6. Now making box 8 a blue cage will force a 18 pair on the kropki. Therefore the box 8 cage is green!
48:26 for me. What a beautiful puzzle. When I fully understood the whole break-in I had to stop for a second to appreciate the fact that it actually worked. From there it wasn’t easy to finish it either, but I managed to get to the end without guessing or bifurcating.
I really wanted to solve this one myself because I quickly found the very beautiful break-in, and after breaking it once I managed to do it (nowhere near Simon‘s time though). A very, very entertaining and beautifully designed puzzle!
Your "extensive amount of explaining" is why I keep coming back.
I love this channel. By the time I attempt and finish one puzzle, there are 5 new ones posted!
Honestly it's Simon's personality and how great he explains stuff is why his so great! Obviously cause his smart to
I am astounded that this was even possible! Simon's magic was flowing!
amazing solve again. thank you Simon and Rocky.
Brilliantly done Simon!
I love watching the videos when I spot something Simon hasn’t. Then he does something that takes me 5 mins to wrap my brain around. Like a game of leapfrog.
Like at 56:03 you remember better than he did that he himself had JUST colored as green as a potential example, not as definitive?! ARRRGHHGJJFJDJJSNDNCNCNMF
Wow what a stunning puzzle, Rocky roer, I was continuously struggling how to identify on the page my reasoning so I didn't loose my place but in the end it falls into place and hopefully I learned something about marking!
That avalanche at the end was fun to watch, very impressive!
Thank you for a longer video! The sub hour videos are a bit short.
The extensive amount of explaining is my favorite
Ouch, that was tough. 2 hours and 3 minutes for me, but delighted to have worked through it to the end. A tad too difficult to say I truly enjoyed it but it certainly gives a sense of achievement at the end.
When Simon got stuck in the middle looking at the blue in the corner I was thinking about the colors of the petals. In each of the quadrants the petals had to be either the same color or different and be the same in the other quadrants. In both cases the corner of the middle box had to be the colour of one of the adjacent boxes and so that cell in the bottom right could never be blue. Of course I hadn’t realized why that not being blue was in any way important.
Great puzzle!
at 1hr 1min.. the world is saved by more colouring - a classic Simon solve - loved it :)
I am absolutly sure this was green. 2 minutes ago: If... this whould be green. Then forget that it was hipothetical. Classic Simon.
Even more classic Simon is that he *doubted* his conclusion since he could not reconstruct his own reasoning - which, we know, never was. This man is an alien. Probably a hyperintelligent shade of the colour blue. Which explains his fondness of chromatologics,
