  • Philo Farnsworth. inventor of television, was born in a village in Utah in 1906. He did not know electricity until 1916. However, an immense natural intelligence led him to probe into terrain that no one had so far successfully explored. In fact, the idea of television came to him watching from the combine where he worked the lines of the furrows of the field. Why is his name not known if he also produced the first nuclear fusion reactor? Although in 1927 he demonstrated the first version of his work, he did not receive financial support. In contrast, the RCA tycoon David Sarnoff not only failed to fund him, but sent him a spy to steal his invention. That meant that for the rest of his life Philo had to litigate with the RCA to prove the truth. A judge recognized it many years later, but it was too late. His invention had been used for purposes totally opposed to his intention to create a means of transmission of culture and education. So he refused to watch television, and at the end of his life he was a perfect stranger, mired in depression and alcoholism. He saw that his beloved invention would never be a means to the progress of humanity, but a weapon that would destroy entire cultures and develop an unprecedented control over the conscience of citizens.
