    This week we're looking at how you can easily incorporate the Dorian scale/mode into your playing using a scale you already probably know really well: The Minor Pentatonic scale
    The dorian scale is exactly the same as the minor pentatonic but have two extra notes in there: the major 2nd and the major 6th. These are color tones that can add a lot of emotive value to your bass riffs and fills.
    So, we're going to look at a bass riff and 3 bass fills that utilize the dorian scale in this way so you can see how it can be used in application and context!
    Enjoy!

    Mark, here on internet/youtube your'e one of the greatest bass-player and -teacher REALLY !
    Also, this lesson is absolutely great ! And it helps me very much !!!
    But it sucks (sorry, for this german expression) when you are talking about tabs...
    For example: e-flat, 8th fret on g-string or c, 10th fret on d-string...and so on...
    I mean, it's okay for beginners; but when we're talking about the dorian scale, we should know,
    on which string or in which fret different tones/notes are located...
    Sorry, I had to get rid of it...

    Does this not apply when everyone else will be playing Ab instead of A naturals? Or is it understood everyone else will be playing in Dorian mode also? Or is thinking in this mode for when hanging on a ii chord for long time, for example?

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Před 6 lety +2

      Yes, everyone else must be in that general ballpark. It can be chord ii in a major key or a chord I in a Dorian based tune. This happens quite a bit without people even realising. It's not Modal writing in the strictest sense but you'll get a lot of tunes (especially funk tunes) playing a minor key based around a Dorian rather than one of the 3 common minor scales. A lot of this is based around using your ear. The general harmony has to be based around a Minor 7 chord.

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, but in that case you're going to be using a minor 2nd and minor 6th. You have to be sure it'll fit OK with the harmony.

    Mate it's great that you guys do this for free but all of you play to fast too much of the time for us beginners/intermediate to pick up. Fine do it at the finish to show how its supposed to end up but if you play fast it's almost pointless. It is going to take us months to emulate you at that speed!

    • @johnclement8913
      @johnclement8913 Před 3 lety

      Hay dude I absolutely agree with you he's going so fast and his camera is to far away to see exactly what notes he's playing. I hope he reads these comments so he'll act on it but I give him propps he's a outstanding player just slow down there.
