  • Death of Del Paso by Phil D'Asaro
    The glory days for North Sacramento’s Del Paso area date back to the Gold Rush, but its decades-old story of decline may have a modern days purple lining.

    A walk down memory lane! I was born (1940) and raised in North Sacramento, graduating from Norte del Rio (1957) after a year at Grant Union High School. I often drive down Del Paso Boulevard and remember all the good times at the two skating rinks! So glad to see a little spit and polish being applied to my old stomping grounds!

    Oh yes, My family moved to 2680 Hawthorne St. from Gardenland in 1955 or 6. I still own the home and have kept our original party line Wabash (925) 9449 telephone number out of nostalgia. It doesn't even have a phone hooked up to it. At 73 Reality is finally beginning to set in as I am getting ready to finally let it go. I was a volunteer and worked part time at the Fire Department until the merger took place around 1964. My dad and mom were a part of the North Sacramento business community as partneship owner's of Frank and Andy's Hauf Brau right on the corner of Arden Way, Del Paso Blvd., and Grove Ave. Better food than Sam's.John AndersonNDR Class 1961

    wow! Just found your yt channel. I grew up on Ralston Rd, off of Bell St. On Saturdays..1957, my Dad would bring me to Iceland for ice skating lessons, then to skate after lessons. I was born in 1949, went to Howe Avenue, then on to Encina High school. Those times skating at Iceland were some of the happiest in my life. Now live in Nashville, TN. Miss Sacramento...it was a great place to grow up in.

    I learned to ice skate at Iceland in 1952. My folks and I moved to North Sac to Ellen st in 1948. Moved again to West El Camino and Grove in 1950. I went to the North Sacramento School for kindergarten, then to Our Lady of Fatima for grades 1-8, then to Las Palmas Jr Hi, then to Norte del Rio, graduating in 1961. This documentary brought back memories of swimming at Woodlake Swim Club, Skating at Iceland and Senator Rollerdrome, Western movies at the Del Paso Theater on Wednesday afternoons ending with a free popsicle, movies at the Grande Theater, movies at the Starlite Drive-In, steak dinners at Lil Joes for $0.99.

    My father started building our home on Claire Ave. in the late 40's, had huge garden, big front yard, and everyone in the neighbor hood were good people and real friends. There was no crime to speak of, I went to Robla elementary school, 2 years at Rio Linda, Junior High then was moved to Del Paso junior high, then graduated from GUHS. Very few fights, got burgers and fries across the street a Lou's Burgers (the best burgers around). Any way Del Paso Heights was a normal family place back then. Down town Del Paso, had Spudnuts, real 5 and dimes. Liquor store, Stop-n-shop food store, barber shop, and many more small time things., was still good when we moved away in 1963. Good times were had back then. Good bye old friend, Del Paso Heights

    It’s such an interesting place. I lived there and it was really bad. The gangs, prostitution, drug dealers, and tons of crime. But, you drive around and see all these neat old buildings that are boarded up and abandoned.

    The only time my friends and I went Iceskating at that rink. I was a senior in HS 1993, I got my truck broken into. All my cd’s and my stereo stolen. We were from Colfax. This ice rink was the only one around. We used to drive to sac to go to the movies and miniature golfing. Man we drove everywhere. Auburn only had 2 screens.

    When I lived in Sacramento I did a lot of community work in Del Paso. The code in this piece is very sad. "Bring it back" and other language. So basically, you gentrifie the neighborhood, right. Because I did not see very many ppl who look like the ppl served in Del Paso... SAD BUT TYPICAL

    • @sms725841
      @sms725841 Před 7 lety

      sk s...Yes it is Del Paso. I live within walking distance to most of the shots in this video. Del Paso Heights is IN north Sacramento. It's not it's own city or town, its a specific community or area. Like a nick name so to speak. It's what North Highlands is to Citrus Heights.

      @sms725841 Před 7 lety +1

      "...you can tell they're not from N. Sac just people who have seen n sac through the years." What are you even talking about? You sound like you wouldn't even be able to point out del Paso on a map! Those "old white people" own businesses on Del Paso Blvd and are District 2 council members/representatives. Do you even know what you're commenting on? Do you even know where Sacramento is?

    We have owned Hanna's Appliances since the early 80s, we had a booming business untying the
