I think it's partly because they featured Ginny enough that recasting her for someone with better chemistry with Dan was too much of an issue (or they just didn't want to), but not enough that she really got to come into her own in the movies... In the books she gets to be shown as more confident and sassy later... They also show her and Harry becoming a little closer over time too and more clearly show she has a crush on him from the beginning, which is not really shown too much in the films.
I think they could have made it work, but by film 5 they needed to get her to be a bit of a bigger part and they needed a bunch more time in film 6... The rest of the film could have done with more time too... I reckon they should have split the book into two films, like book 7. It could have been so much better.
But yeah, even though I really like the pairing, it was a little out of nowhere, even in the books... Then again, sometimes that's just how love is, so...
But yeah, the cafe girl might've been a mistake lol, she was too good.

Harry tore past Hagrid and his opponent, took aim at Snape’s back, and yelled, “Stupefy!”
He missed; the jet of red light soared past Snape’s head; Snape shouted, “Run, Draco!”and
turned. Twenty yards apart, he and Harry looked at each other before raising their wands
    simultaneously.
    “Cruc -”
    But Snape parried the curse, knocking Harry backward off his feet before he could complete it;
Harry rolled over and scrambled back up again as the huge Death Eater behind him yelled,
“Incendio!” Harry heard an explosive bang and a dancing orange light spilled over all of them:
    Hagrid’s house was on fire.
“Fang’s in there, yer evil -!” Hagrid bellowed.
“Cruc -” yelled Harry for the second time, aiming for the figure ahead illuminated in the
dancing firelight, but Snape blocked the spell again. Harry could see him sneering.
“No Unforgivable Curses from you, Potter!” he shouted over the rushing of the flames, Hagrid’s
yells, and the wild yelping of the trapped Fang. “You haven’t got the nerve or the ability -”
“Incarc -”Harry roared, but Snape deflected the spell with an almost lazy flick of his arm.
“Fight back!” Harry screamed at him. “Fight back, you cowardly -”
“Coward, did you call me, Potter?” shouted Snape. “Your father would never attack me unless it
was four on one, what would you call him, I wonder?”
    “Stupe -”
“Blocked again and again and again until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind
closed, Potter!” sneered Snape, deflecting the curse once more. “Now come!” he shouted at the
huge Death Eater behind Harry. “It is time to be gone, before the Ministry turns up -”
    “Impedi -”
But before he could finish this jinx, excruciating pain hit Harry; he keeled over in the grass.
Someone was screaming, he would surely die of this agony, Snape was going to torture him to
    death or madness -
“No!” roared Snape’s voice and the pain stopped as suddenly as it had started; Harry lay curled
on the dark grass, clutching his wand and panting; somewhere overhead Snape was shouting,
“Have you forgotten our orders? Potter belongs to the Dark Lord - we are to leave him! Go!
    Go!”
And Harry felt the ground shudder under his face as the brother and sister and the enormous
Death Eater obeyed, running toward the gates. Harry uttered an inarticulate yell of rage: In that
instant, he cared not whether he lived or died. Pushing himself to his feet again, he staggered
blindly toward Snape, the man he now hated as much as he hated Voldemort himself -
    “Sectum -!”
Snape flicked his wand and the curse was repelled yet again; but Harry was mere feet away now
and he could see Snape’s face clearly at last: He was no longer sneering or jeering; the blazing
flames showed a face full of rage. Mustering all his powers of concentration, Harry thought, Levi
    -
“No, Potter!” screamed Snape. There was a loud BANG and Harry was soaring backward,
hitting the ground hard again, and this time his wand flew out of his hand. He could hear Hagrid
yelling and Fang howling as Snape closed in and looked down on him where he lay, wandless
and defenseless as Dumbledore had been. Snape’s pale face, illuminated by the flaming cabin,
was suffused with hatred just as it had been before he had cursed Dumbledore.
“You dare use my own spells against me, Potter? It was I who invented them - I, the HalfBlood
Prince! And you’d turn my inventions on me, like your filthy father, would you? I don’t
    think so… no!”
Harry had dived for his wand; Snape shot a hex at it and it flew feet away into the darkness and
    out of sight.
“Kill me then,” panted Harry, who felt no fear at all, but only rage and contempt. “Kill me like
you killed him, you coward -”
“DON’T -” screamed Snape, and his face was suddenly demented, inhuman, as though he was
in as much pain as the yelping, howling dog stuck in the burning house behind them -”CALL
    ME COWARD!”

Draco in this movie is so well written. His development is amazing and there are so many things pointing to this, almost all of them being related to those last few scenes.
    1. At the beginning of the movie, Draco said he would pitch himself off the astronomy tower before returning again to Hogwarts. When he corners Dumbledore (or when Dumbledore allows Draco to do that), it’s on the Astronomy Tower before Snape kills him and sends him falling from it.
    2. In his 2nd year, Draco states that Dumbledore was the worst thing to have happened to Hogwarts. Here, in the movie, his 6th year, Draco is struggling to merely keep his wand pointed at Dumbledore. And when Snape kills Dumbledore, the face Draco makes is one of horror.
    3. Again, going back to Draco’s second year. In the books he states that Snape was his favorite teacher and wishes that he was headmaster. Now when faced with the task to actually kill the headmaster, he can’t bring himself to do it. Again, when Snape does it instead he’s horrified and is very surprised that Snape would do that.
    4. When Harry screams “Snape he trusted you!” Draco turns and reacts with horror. However it’s not out of fear but rather regret and remorse since he too has that same thought going through his head, “Snape, he trusted you!”
    5. It’s already bad enough that Draco can’t kill Dumbledore, but the reason why is not that he hasn’t killed before but it’s who he is killing. While Dumbledore may be incredibly powerful and famous, those were the least of his worries that kept him from killing Dumbledore. It was the fact that he was so kind to everyone around him. Draco makes small hints at this throughout the movie but it becomes apparent when he finally disarms Dumbledore. When saying “I have to do this. I have to kill you... or he’s going to kill me!” it shows that the only reason why he’s pointing his wand at Dumbledore is because Voldemort is threatening him. At this point it becomes apparent that he has acknowledged how kind of a person Dumbledore was. And when Snape kills him, Draco realizes that the only man that was willing to truly help was killed.
Draco has amazing development in this movie and it sets the tone for the later movies. I won’t spoil it but you’ll see what I’m talking about.

When Monica said that Harry will never be at Hermione's level of intelligence and that Ron can be there for comic relief that just hurt to hear man. Hermione is actually my favorite character in the books but these movies really didn't have to tear down Ron and Ginny just to prop her up. She's already an amazing character just from the source material. Ron especially got the worst of it. A lot of his great moments from the books were taken by Hermione while Ron was just degraded down to the funny guy of the trio while the audience is left questioning his usefulness in the grand scheme of things. We never got to really see much of Hermione's flaws while Ron's insecurities are glaringly obvious in Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows Part 1. The reason these 3 make up my favorite fictional trio is because of their flaws. I still love these movies but c'mon Steve Kloves...did you really have give all these moments to Hermione just because she was your favorite character?

1:01:59 I've often wondered if Draco ever realised that he was only chosen because of his father's failure - he is his father's punishment, if he succeeds in his mission that's a bonus for the Death Eaters, if he fails by the end of the school year he will be killed for his failure by Voldemort himself. That's Lucius's punishment for failing him, to watch in agony while his son tries and fails and tries and fails, knowing that his son will die if he does ultimately fail and that he won't be able to do anything to stop it. I think that's why his mother asked Snape for help, I think she guessed at what Voldemort was actually planning. I know Draco knows he'll be killed if he doesn't do it, but I'm still not sure that he was chosen with the expectation to fail.

    • @steffid_
      @steffid_ Před 3 lety +5

yes indeed. you can see how much voldy wants him to suffer in the table scene were he took his wand which is basically making him powerless and like a middlefinger directly into his face as a wand is such a personal thing to a wizard. There was no way voldy tried to rely on draco and you can see that this made sense as draco fails with the cursed necklace or poisened drink which did not even get near dumbledore.

    • @steffid_
      @steffid_ Před 3 lety +3

i forgot to add that ironically this is another lego to voldys downfall he himself put up. As narzissas only goal always was to keep draco safe she had no care anymore for who is winning this fight. She did not hesitate making an unbreakable vow, she did lie to voldy as he asks her if potter was dead which could have turned everything around if he would have noticed a second before that harry was still alive and attack him without nagiri being dead. So we basically watch voldy from start to finish shovel his own grave as he always underestimated the power in love.

25:27 That's why I think the Hogwarts School motto (which when translated means 'Never Tickle a Sleeping Dragon') actually makes sense - by learning to use magic, you may be skilled enough or brave enough to tickle and wake up a sleeping dragon, but by knowing how to control magic, you'll know that you don't just go around deliberately disturbing sleeping dragons just to prove that you are brave enough, intelligent enough or skilled enough to do it.

Two seconds, only two, when you can see that tear coming out from Dumbledore's eye, when he sits there weak and unable to move, begging Harry for some water. SOME BOOK DETAILS:
"If there is an attack," said Dumbledore, "I give you permission to use any counterjinx or curse that might occur to you. However, I do not think you need worry about being attacked tonight."
    "Why not, sir?
"You are with me," said Dumbledore simply. [When they are visiting Horace Slughorn]
(Fred and George were able to open the shop because Harry gave them his Triwizard winnings at the end of year 4.)
The right hand window was covered with a gigantic poster, purple like those of the ministry, but emblazoned with flashing yellow letters:
WHY ARE YOU WORRYING ABOUT YOU-KNOW-WHO?
YOU SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT YOU-NO-POO -- THE CONSTIPATION SENSATION THAT'S GRIPPING THE NATION! [When they visited the Weasley shop in Diagon Alley]
(It takes 6 months to make liquid luck, the vial only has 24 hrs worth.)
“I’ve got to be quick,” Harry panted. “Dumbledore thinks I’m getting my Invisibility Cloak. Listen. . . .”
Quickly he told them where he was going and why. He did not pause either for Hermione’s gasps of horror or for Ron’s hasty questions; they could work out the finer details for themselves later.
“. . . so you see what this means?” Harry finished at a gallop. “Dumbledore won’t be here tonight, so Malfoy’s going to have another clear shot at whatever he’s up to. No, listen to me!” he hissed angrily, as both Ron and Hermione showed every sign of interrupting. “I know it was Malfoy celebrating in the Room of Requirement. Here -” He shoved the Marauder’s Map into Hermione’s hands. “You’ve got to watch him and you’ve got to watch Snape too. Use anyone else who you can rustle up from the D.A., Hermione, those contact Galleons will still work, right? Dumbledore says he’s put extra protection in the school, but if Snape’s involved, he’ll know what Dumbledore’s protection is, and how to avoid it - but he won’t be expecting you lot to be on the watch, will he?”
“Harry -” began Hermione, her eyes huge with fear.
“I haven’t got time to argue,” said Harry curtly. “Take this as well -”
He thrust the socks into Ron’s hands.
“Thanks,” said Ron. “Er - why do I need socks?”
“You need what’s wrapped in them, it’s the Felix Felicis. Share it between yourselves and Ginny too. Say good-bye to her for me. I’d better go, Dumbledore’s waiting -”
“No!” said Hermione, as Ron unwrapped the tiny little bottle of golden potion, looking awestruck. “We don’t want it, you take it, who knows what you’re going to be facing?”
“I’ll be fine, I’ll be with Dumbledore,” said Harry. “I want to know you lot are okay. . . . Don’t look like that, Hermione, I’ll see you later. . . .”
A small battle ensues between the death-eaters and the aurors and all 3 of them along with Neville and Luna survive because of the potion.

He says “dark magic tends to” then Harry touches the ring and dumbledore stares at him cause he knows what it means, then says “leave traces” as he stares at Harry. Half-Blood Prince is by far the best HP movie, in my opinion. For me it's the first film to actually showcase them acting like proper teenagers. There are laughs, there's banter, having fun in and between school classes, petty arguments and quick reconciliation, there's love and there's heartbreak...the film strikes an almost perfect balance of Comedy and Drama, culminating in one of the most devestating scenes in the entire series in Dumbledore's death. It provides enough cheer and heartwarming moments before it descends into the dark and serious tone of the Deathly Hallows. I love it.

'We've got a problem Snape,' said the lumpy Amycus, whose eyes and wand were fixed alike upon Dumbledore, 'the boy doesn't seem able-'
But somebody else had spoken Snape's name, quite softly.
    'Severus...'
The sound frightened Harry beyond anything he had experienced all evening. For the first time, Dumbledore was pleading.
Snape said nothing, but walked forward and pushed Malfoy roughly out of the way. The three Death Eaters fell back without a word. Even the werewolf seemed cowed.
Snape gazed at Dumbledore, and there was a revulsion and hatred etched in the harsh lines of his face.
    'Severus...please...'
Snape raised his wand and pointed it directly at Dumbledore.
    'Avada Kedavra!'
A jet of green light shot from the end of Snapes wand and hit Dumbledore squarely in the chest. Harry's scream of horror never left him; silent and unmoving, he was forced to watch as Dumbledore was blasted into the air; for a split second he seemed to have suspended beneath the shining skull, and then he fell slowly backwards, like a great rag doll, over the battlements and out of sight.
Harry felt as though he too were hurtling across space, it had not happened... it could not have happened...

I'm one of the fans that despises this film. It's my favorite book, but my least favorite movie BY FAR. I just want to put my say out there :)
      - They ruin Ginny's entire character
      - They got rid of the majority of Voldemort's backstory (I know you mentioned that, but it was a key subplot with crucial information that they literally just ignored 90% of)
      - Everything is really awkward for most of it (or just rushed or forced)
      - David Yates tried to make it a romantic comedy. Romantic comedy is NOT the right genre for anything in Harry Potter (subplots, but not the entire story, I mean)
      - The Battle of the Burrow was weird and not well thought out (they can never address it again, and it can't affect the plot at all, because it wasn't in the books, but it was a major event, so it should have been addressed, but they literally couldn't. Not great planning)
      - Harry and Ginny's romance was forced, awkward, and painful to watch (and they're my OTP in the books)
      - Ron got written off as comic relief and kind of a jerk (though, to be fair, that isn't just HBP, it's the entire movie series)
      - Just the general vibe doesn't match the book at all, and it bothers me to no end
There's more, little details, but I think that covers most of the big stuff. The only HP movies I can stand are 1 and 2, though (and occasionally 3 and 5). I'm VERY particular, probably too much so.

I mean, in the book, when he had this ring, he already killed his own uncle for it, and he planned to make a horcrux (or actually he already made it), when he get his answer from Slughorn. • @steffid_
      @steffid_ Před 3 lety +2

i have to disappoint you bc in the books dumbledore describes as they are in the boat that the inferi are most likely to attack at some point and the negative effects of the potion oder drink go only away with fresh water. As regulus tries and do the same thing he dies as he could not hold himself back from drinking water and triggering the attack too. So he clearly asked for water and did not only warn about the inferi.

The one cheerful thing about this film is how sassy Harry got to be when he took the liquid luck. In the books he’d snap back at Snape and give sarcastic comments. He did this a little in the first few films but it was nice to see in this one and see Daniel Radcliffe be a bit more playful and comedic.

I know we won’t see a retelling with the books anytime soon, what with Fantastic Beasts and other Wizarding World stories to be told but I would still love to see a live action series based on the books, so they could expand and fill in other plot points.
