In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Megadeth based on the many requests for music from Rust in Peace after last week's Metallica video. This is my fourth time reviewing music from Megadeth, and although I'm still not a big fan of Dave's vocals, their music is growing on me. I especially loved the chromatic motion in the bass line and the chromatic third modulation in the final section of the song. I hope you enjoy!

You're right that it's two different guitarists. The 11 solos are played by:

Well done sir
@@EveretteDomalewski thanks
The 11 solos. Man that rules 🤘LOVE it.
This is the worse '2004 remixed and remastered' version. The original album version is superior in every way compared to this. The guitars, especially the solos are way clearer in the original version.
Marty's solos take you on a journey through the desert... on a camel's back
Alchemy, sorcery, wizardry, thermatology, electricity... Should be next
Five magics!!
I master five magics
srsly what's the difference between sorcery and wizardry? Lol Dave was lazy
@@soopahsoopah Sorcerers are born with their magical skills, wizards need to study to learn magic.
@@soopahsoopah If you play D&D you'd see the difference. History irl informed that, even.
Very briefly said...one type of magic is more given (wizardry), the other is more from inside yourself, (sorcery).
Both require study and discipline.
Both highly affected by intent.
you should listen to the entire Rust in Peace album someday
not the remastered version though
@@epnlvr9790why not?
@@enzolumare5680because Dave went in and messed with the original mix. Not for the better either
@@enzolumare5680 He redid vocals on most if not all the songs, something to do w/losing the original recordings or damage, can't remember.
@@enzolumare5680 It sounds worse. Snare sounds weird, probably sample replaced drums. Guitars sound worse, buried in the mix. And the vocals sound worse too.
Good lord this album is so satisfying. It never gets old.
The thing that I love about Dave's voice is that it is absolutely nothing like any other voice.
he truly has one of the most unique voices in metal, love it or not
and honestly, his voice works Really well with their music, even if his voice isnt the best it complements the music well, and injects a lot of personality into their songs
unique doesnt mean good
@@FlagerMiszcz i never said they were Good,
and tbh id much rather have unique but bad vocals than boring vocals, and dave's vocals are far from boring
Imagine having a boring voice, heard 100 times: THEN COMES DAVE
At the begging we all say we don't like Dave's voice but, then, we can't imagine Megadeth with any other voice.
Little bit of trivia for you here doug: the main chromatic chord progression in the very beginning in D is the exact same chord progression in one section of Call of Cthulhu, and Dave Mustaine actually did get songwriting credit for that. A lot of the other sections of Cthulhu are also clearly derived from that main progression
Led Zep’s kashmir also?
Ride the Lightning came out in 1984, Rust in Peace came out in 1990. Hanger 18 would be derived from The Call of Ktulu, not the other way around.
@@gumballthechewy dave wrote the call of ktulu. metallica used his riffs.
@@anistissaoui Kashmir has a similar chromatic movement, but it's not in D and also unlike hangar 18 in kahsmir I'm pretty sure they move the bass note chromatically
@@otherside6580 1 chord progression does NOT equate the whole song. So NO, Dave did not write The Call of Ktulu. In fact, the working title was called "When Hell Freezes Over" and Metallica didn't even start working on it until after the release of Kill'em All.
Take no prisoners is a song that is criminally underrated of this album. Cant wait for the full album listen. Rock on Doug
Doug and I were abducted by aliens and loved every minute of it 👽😎
You two know too much!!!
"Doug and I were abducted by aliens .." ehhh..must be Tuesday.
@@svartmetall even the probe was awesome 👍
Dave always has a crunchy, dry tone, and tends to play scalar licks. His counterparts over the years have used a fuller sound, so it's easy to tell them apart. You just have to get used to Dave's nasal vocals.
Few people have better tone than Marty
When I first got into metao I didn't even care about his voice because the music was so good
Only Dave can really inject that cynical snarl into the lyrics
I really hope you react to Five Magics by Megadeth at some point! That one’s my favourite!
So good.
Yeahh frr
Good Mourning...Black Friday would be an interesting listen for you Doug
My favourite of theirs
I believe Doug would like the music. I'm not sure what he would think about the lyrics... lol
@@lukevrbanac1923 may be mine too 🤘
@@metaltildeth6783 hahahahaha good point. I think he'll like the good mourning section but not the Black friday, but maybe find it at least interesting to hear
@@metaltildeth6783Paint the devil on the wall
The thing about Dave's voice is that it's a character voice, not meant to be technical singing with huge range and clarity and power like a Halford. Dave's singing style is more punk-influenced, meant to convey the anger and emotion of his lyrics; sort of a snarl if you will. More about attitude. Personally I love his vocals as they perfectly suit the music he writes. He also throws in a lot of clever inflections, for instance in Tornado Of Souls when he says "Hanging up I wanted to cry", he sings it with a mock-crying expression.
Perfectly said. People don't understand how interesting Dave is as a singer., He's full of nuances with a punk attitude.
F# is correct with the flat 2 as G as you noted. You’re a master of relative pitch sir.
Good Mourning/Black Friday on the Peace Sells album! Original lineup. Most beautiful and epic introduction. Beautifully composed and executed.
MEGADOUG....nice!! 💥☠️💥
Full Rust in Peace PLEEEEASE
Hangar 18 is the gold standard of Thrash lead guitar imo. Tremendous playing by Marty and Dave. Man I dig this too, this cat is dropping theory knowledge at a moments notice in real time. Dude's rocking it out on piano! Sensational.
Dave and Marty were definitely going back and forth soloing. And you can tell who’s playing which solo if you’re familiar with their playing styles. Dave has the more chaotic style and Marty usually tends to be more melodic and also more harmonically complex
In case someone else has not posted it, many of Megadeth's "official" videos are actually edited for time, shorting the songs. For example, the 'Hangar 18' official video has several solos edited out. 'In My Darkest Hour', which you have already watched, is also edited. And, 'Sweating Bullets' is edited losing around 50 seconds. I don't know why they did it, other than maybe to fit within Mtv's time parameters?
GOATed song from a GOATed album.
Peace sells is better
@@MBP208 And Puppets beats both of them
@@fixxxer7030 Megadeth has higher highs and lower lows. MoP is more consistent throughout. Same can be said for much of Metallica vs Megadeth
Marty and Dave always did those great trade offs/duels for the solos. Some of my favorites for that are on countdown to extinction. Dave’s voice isn’t for everyone, but can be an acquired taste, and that album is a good place to acquire the taste.
Countdown to Extinction is a fantastic album 👌
My father was building supervisor for Buildings 18E and 18F at Wright Patterson AFB for about 10 years in the 80's and 90's. They are very interesting buildings, one of them (can't remember if it was E or F) was basically a giant freezer, which they used to test starting jet engines in sub-zero temperatures in the 1950's. I've been in both buildings and the only alien I ever saw was the Star Wars 'Hammerhead' action figure in a liquid filled jar on a work desk, with the label 'Specimen 052577' if I remember correctly.
Have you been to levels -7, -8 and -9? That's where you see the really interesting stuff. Including frozen aliens. The entrance to the elevator is extremely well hidden.
@@blafoobar9997 you mean level G, H, and I? Everyone knows the military uses letters for levels below ground 😉
@@ATSaale That may be true, but not in this case, as this building is very very very special indeed.😉
And: I am European, I have no idea how your military usually designates the floors. I don't even know how my country's military does it.
Yeah, that's what a secret government official would say. 😊
The military intelligence line always gives me a laugh too.
It's trite and infantile. Mustaine knows that was not a good moment for him, lyrically.
@@CarlySBI was in the Army for 23 years and I find it hilarious. We always make fun of the intel weenies. I can get more reliable forecasts from a Magic 8 Ball.

Get ready for the greatest 2 axe attack to ever grace metal! R.I.P. is the greatest metal album ever made.. Looking forward to this one.
Very close to Ride the Lightning and Reign in Blood, not saying any order
@andrewkemp2238 well, Mustaine did write a few of Metallica's songs.
This is the not so good sounding remixed version though.
@@jadedjackel655especially on RTL
The intro has the exact same chord progression as the d minor riff from call of ktulu. Both written by dave
In an interview with Dave year ago, he said he wrote the music for 'Hangar 18' around the time he was in the band Panic, which was around 1981. 'Mechanix' and the music for 'Rust in Peace... Polaris' were written as well.
Dave has claimed to write the entirety of when hell freezes over, which is the demo version of call of ktulu, it is on spotify if you're interested
I really recommend Poisonous Shadows from the Dystopia album. I think you'll find that a lot of fun. Especially some nice acoustic stuff
A no skip music album, just perfect
Rust in Peace hold a special place in my heart as it was one of the foundational albums in my metal journey. Great post Doug. Cheers from Canada!
Mine as well, I was (almost) 17 years old when it was released in 1990. Remember liking it soooo much better than AJFA released 2 years earlier. Some other commenters mentioned they won't listen to the remix version. I won't either.
Killer duel guitar solo’s of Dave and Marty
I was happy about this one but when he said "2004 remix" I wasn't anymore :(
facts
Agreed
The bass sounds so much better in this remix imo
Why?
Yeh, the original is so much better..
This is the beginning of the classic lineup that ends with Cryptic Writings. 4 albums of greatness.
Edit: Risk doesn’t count due to Nick Menza being gone. I saw them in October 2002 and by then Marty & Dave E had already left & Chris Poland came back. They played Ashes in Your Mouth, so I’m content.
How soon we forget "Risk"
Risk is a good album, it just isn't thrash
I love you and your metal Mondays. You made my night (Central-Mediterranean time). Cheers.
Megadeth was the first metal cassette tape , it was Countdown to Extinction.
My mom bought it for me a few months after it came out for my birthday.
That started my journey into metal.
I still have that tape.
Awesome to see you cover MEGEDETH again Doug! Daves voice changes somewhat over the albums but still has his classic snarl and will take some getting used to. The end sections of Hangar 18 are in two parts, E minor , but then switches to a chromatic riff thats "E,F,F# F# an octave higher" like a metal/blues scale . Would recommend listening to "a tout le monde" where Daves vocals are arguably better. Would love to see your take on some of Marty's solo work "undertow" or anything from his albums, maybe even his newest release would be of interest as its better produced and has some amazing piano work.
Roughly half the fun of this song is watching Nick Menza. 😄
Thanks Doug . The next one should "Five Magics" I think ! Another Megadeth day ! byes.
"too short of a song" Yeah buddy, same thoughts
Hey Doug.
Just wanted to say a massive thanks for being an inspiration for me learning music theory.
Really gotten deep into music and how its built etc after you started reacting to some of my favorit artist.
And have opened my eyes to a whole New world
Cant wait for Lucretia
A great review, Mr. Doug. I saw this tour. It was amazing!
There are like 5 normal metal songs' worth of riffs and solos in this one song. This is one of the few songs I'd consider "perfect".
Hey doug, in the future try to avoid the 2004 remix of megadeth’s records. They’re a bit cleaner than the originals, but they lose a lot of the pressence and character of the original recordings, they almost feel hollow in a way. Still love the reaction though!
I agree 1000%
Mr. Mustaine re-recorded a number of guitar and vocal parts for these remixes. Not to put too fine a point on things, but let's say opinion is divided on whether or not these performances were improvements upon the originals.
@@xburkbx I've never heard anyone, ever, say that they prefer Megadeth remasters.
I think the remasters are fine for KIMB and SFSGSW, neutral for Peace Sells and obviously terrible for Rust in Peace
Need to watch their reaction to the famous break of the middle 👀
So glad you covered this song!! I too would love a full album review some day. In regards to not being able to use the music video version, I actually prefer it when you review a song this way without the video.. Like you said the videos can be distracting.
I saw Megadeth and Dream Theater on Gigantour in San Antonio Texas about 10 years ago or so. It was quite the show. My ears are still ringing. 🫨🫨🫨
Saw them in Detroit on that tour. Great show for an incredible price. Think I paid $15 each for lawn tickets, which was insane for 9 bands.
But that was almost 20 years ago (2005)….old age is fun.
Marty and Dave solo-ing in this is so much fun.
Five Magics from this album is probably my favourite song ever but I prefer the original. The remaster isn’t always superior!
Fun tidbit: Years ago, fans in Argentina started chanting "Meg-A-Deth" in time with the hits at 7:12, and it's been done around the world ever since.
"Hangar 18" and next "Return to the Hangar" LIVE this one after another...is the Perfect Combination!
Hello from Finland, i have been enjoying watching your videos and like alot that you breakdown the songs with all the musical notes rules of music etc. just wondering are you some day doing any interviews with these bands you are listening imo sounds like a cool idea. have a happy summer
Definitely one of my favorite Megadeth songs! Great video!
Please do the sequel to this song RETURN TO HANGAR.
Personally, I thinks it’s terrible. But all the power to ya. I think “The World Needs A Hero” is awful, only one or two decent tracks on it IMO. “The Dread and the Fugitive Mind” is my favourite off that one, but most of it is sorely lacking. Still far better an album than Risk or Supercollider, both of which are terrible. But at least Supercollider seemed like Dave wrote it because he wanted to, rather than Risk which was written to become a radio hit. Risk is garbage because it was forced, Supercollider seems less so and at least genuine, but still completely boring.
FINALLY! This song is so fun to play on the drums but now all i can do in the beginning is count out the rhythm lol
The last part is a back and forth between alien horrors (Bam, Bam, Bam) and human feelings (the solos).
This the song that got me into Megadeth last year and metal in general as well!
Welcome. You've reached the peak. Now it's all downhill :)
Doug I would love to hear what you think of Jason Becker! His songs altitudes and eleven blue Egyptians are really great. Mr Becker lost his ability to play guitar from ALS, but his playing deserves a listen. Love your analyses!
This is my favorite Megadeth album and band line up. The album definitely stands the test of time.
Coincidentally, I’ll be seeing Megadeth in concert, tomorrow night. This song is a staple of their setlist, so I’m pretty sure your analysis of Hangar 18 will be in the back of my mind when they perform it
Dave's voice can be an acquired taste.
Back in 1988, I got a chance to visit the Air Force Museum on the Dayton Air Base. Back then they didn't really care what people did, and none of the planes or outside areas were fenced off. In the distance I spied a row of numbered hangers, and of course teenage me made a bee-line for Hanger 18 (it was already legendary long before the Megadeth song came out). I looked through a window, hoping to see something interesting, but alas, there wasn't anything to see, just an empty hanger. Later, when this song came out, I was always mildly disappointed because I had been to the real Hanger 18 and there wasn't anything in it.
Love the way you guys are always surprised by the complexity in metal
I want this feeling again.
Hearing a song for the first time.
Nice reaction Doug. Those guitar solos by Marty are eargasmics
I think you'd appreciate Five Magics
You don't have to figure out if you love metal you just feel it and know.
Was hoping you'd eventually listen to this!!!! :)
On an old VHS tape, I've got Megadeth in an airplane before parachuting out of it and this is one of the backing tracks. It aired on ABC Rage! (Aussie TV), not sure where they got it from but it was from 1990-91. Please one-day can you react to the Angels, Divinyls, or Rose Tattoo ?? For many, they're still rock gods in Australia and need to be seen & heard.
Always good to see you caught off-guard by these great works. One nit-picky thing: if you can, try and go for the original production on this album. To my ears, it's sonically perfect, I didn't see the need for it to be remixed/remastered. I only bought the remaster for the bonus tracks, as I wanted to hear Chris Poland's solos on the demo versions.
Fun fact: this song is why Ellefson went to 5 string basses. He didn't wanna deal with playing in drop d, so he got a 5 string
Conquer Or Die - This is a phase of Megadeth where the Brazilian guitarist had brought a different style to the table
Rattlehead (Final Kill remaster) is definitely worth listening to, Gar’s drumming is another level. Alternatively My Last Words from the Peace Sells record is another great track 👍
Great video Doug!
Very cool!! Going to see them tomorrow in Tilburg (Netherlands) 🤟🏻
Helloween - Keeper of the seven keys
The part at the end you "struggled" with, and were totally right on it was floating around F#, was the rhythm parts between the solos. It very quickly goes G, F#, E, F#, G, F#, E then sliding the power chord F# to G 3 times and a rest. On the last time, it then goes F#, and resolves to E. It feels odd if you think about it on keyboard to resolve that way, but on guitar, it's resolving to the low E on an E standard tuned guitar, so it probably felt natural to resolve there. It's funny how the instrument influences the song writing (where open strings are, etc.).
Doug, so appreciate your content, as much as I appreciate Megadeth. If you appreciate this song, or the album as a whole, then you absolutely MUST do a deep dive on "Countdown to Extinction"!!! Love ya, thanks. ❤
Can you really imagine Megadeth with another singer?
Worth a shot.
Nope
Someone with Dave's timbre, but who can actually sing, yes.
Yes and no. Dave likely wrote music around his vocals and so his vocal approach is the best for this particular music. But -- and I'm sure I'm in a huge minority here -- with the exception of a handful of songs I can't stand Mustaine's voice. Songs like Symphomy of Destruction, À tout le monde and a few others make good use of his vocals, but otherwise his songs sound to me like a guy who was going to make darned sure he has complete control of his band this time, and that meant him handling vocals whether he could actually sing or not. Just my opinion.
The original version of MD45 had Lee Ving from Fear singing. it was definitely different. I really liked it, but it didn't do that well. Dave re-recorded the vocals when he did all the remixes like 10-12 years ago.
Great album. Bought it on tape when it came out 👍👍😎😎 One of my favorite tunes by MeGaDeTh is Wake up Dead. It does take a moment to get used to Dave's vocals but once you accept them as part of Megadeth then you will love them and come to expect them.
I only got into Megadeth back in 2019. Spot on that it takes time to acclimatize your ears and brain to listening to such heavy music.
Not a huge fan of Dave's voice as well, but since I learned a bunch of their songs for guitar by ear, the rhythm sections, I can tell you Dave is a genius song writer for electric guitar.
Even songs like Devil's Island from way back in 1986 are essentially Etudes for thrash metal. Lots of bad tabs and transcriptions out there, but when you figure out the way Dave wrote the parts they all have his economy of motion baked into them. There's a logic to every riff. Memorable, fun to play, instructive.
Daily Doug? Hangar 18? Opportunity to listen for the first time AGAIN
THOROUGHLY enjoy these reactions
Dave Mustaine is not a "sing"-er. He is an "emote"-er -- and as such, there are none better. If you're angry and you need catharsis -- Dave is your go-to guy. If you need snide wit -- Dave is your man. If you need a good sneer-on, you need Dave.
Anthrax is another must. Intro to Reality/Belly of the Beast is a great epic piece.
I want mr. Doug reacting to "LAST RITES: LOVED TO DETH", from their very 1st album, with a piano cover of the intro 🎹😅🤘🏻🤟🏻
Hi Doug, you should check out Dave's vocals in some of his post-Rust In Peace work, he really worked on his technique a lot more after this album and it's very obvious in songs such as Addicted to Chaos, Kick the Chair etc.
Progressive thrash! I'd really love to hear Doug do a breakdown of Dirty Boy by Cardiacs just to see the look on his face :)
same. Also some Voivod
Megadeth are my favorite metal band. The solos are always fresh and stunning. I cannot begin to pick a favorite. Symphony of Destruction is their classic. For A change of style try A Tout Le Monde, Trust, Forclosure of a Dream. Sweating Bullets stands out and Kick the Chair has more stunning solos. Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia are perfect albums. So more Megadeth please.
Rust in Peace, Master of Puppets and Powerslave. Those are my favorite metal albums.
Doug, youre in for a treat!
for more Alien metal try some Voivod next, even you Doug may have some trouble recognizing every weird chord they use, probably the most unique sounding metal band there is
Never the remix.
Exactly 100%
Except for the first 3 albums... those needed remastering/remixing
At least for this album
@@xthatghomiex2939 Peace sells has a great mix imo especially for the time. The 2004 remaster completely botches numerous tracks. Other 2 I kinda agree although the 2004 So Far so good is souless and awful so its really not much better.
Any other time I would agree, but for this song the remaster has way heavier bass and it really compliments this song 🤘
You need to understand, when listening to Dave sing, hes not a singer. Hes a guitarist. He was also a founding member of Metallica. So when he was unceremoniously kicked out of the band, he made sure that would never happen again. He could (and did) replace everything around him over the years. But the one thing no one else could do, is sing like him. He is the Godfather of heavy metal. Metallica wouldnt be anything without him!
The one thing I look forward to on Monday
I have been listening to metal since I bought Twisted Sister Stay Hungry in 86 or what ever... the turing to harder music when Sepultura Arise and Entombed and Clandestine came around.... but still how much metal, death, thrash, black, doom or what ever... Rust in Peace is a top 5 album of all!!!!
Gotta do Lucretia off this album. Probably my favorite after Tornado of Souls. It's got such a rich blues feel, and Friedman's solo is very creative.
Thanks for doing more Megadeth. You really should broaden up even more and try early Mercyful Fate, though. I think that will be interesting for you. They were pioneering their very ovn style back in then early 80’s. I would recommend something from the album Melissa, like the opening song «Evil», but others here might have better tailored suggestions. Would be cool if you did one og their songs.
Really great is short, this song is a masterpeace
Hi Doug! Always great to watch your videos. You need to react to "Symphony of Destruction" live in Argentina, with the crowd singing "Aguante Megadeth"
You're totally right, they Dave and Marty play alternate solos but Marty's oh-so unique style is easily recognizable, NO ONE SOUNDS LIKE MARTY FRIEDMAN.
Pantera's Drummer Vinnie Paul recommended that this song be Megadeth's opener for concerts. Dave loved the idea and they often do open shows with this!
It kinda has an opening song punch to it. They just blast through the doors and the show starts :)
When I heard this in the 80's, I was blown away. Nothing in metal will ever compare to this level of musical mastery, and just great song writing.
