Light Rock Fishing - Winter Sessions - Brixham Breakwater

- A bit of footage dug out from a couple of sessions I had last winter that I never got round to uploading. The next couple of months are generally the toughest for us Lerfers and scratching tactics are often necessary in order to find some action. Thankfully, even in the depths of winter, there is always the chance of a Torbay mackerel too ;)
If LRF is your thing, or you fancy having a go at LRF, my Lerfing ally Ben Bassett has organised a fundraising event - The Big Lerfin' Fundraiser. Its a one day, one location LRF competition with loads of cool prizes. Entry is £20 and this will go directly towards raising money for Jack Perks project to produce a fantastic documentary called Britain's Hidden Fishes.

Awesome winter action! The best LRF channel about 🎣
Thank you mate, managed to dig this footage out from last year thankfully to keep the uploads ticking along whilst I can't get out 🙂
Fair play bud, those rocks on the breakwater are lethal all year round, great session 👍😀
Haha cheers mate, you're right, I've had a few slips on them, but I find myself strangely drawn to those little holes in the rocks. Tight lines mate 👍🎣
Enjoyed watching this mate. Tight lines
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! 👍🎣
Love you channel!👍
Cheers Lee, much appreciated mate 🙂🎣
I’d love a Brixham session at moment!
Tell me about it mate, desperate to get out!
Great work as usual 👏 really enjoyed this ,,thanks bud 👍
Thanks very much mate, glad you enjoyed it! Tight lines 👍🎣
Great video again buddy
Thanks mate, tight lines 🙂🎣
Decent footage pal, keep up the hard work so we can keep enjoying the entertainment.
😎🎣👍🏼
Thanks mate! All the best 🙂🎣
Nice video once again keep up the good work
Cheers mate, all the best 👍🎣
Great vid nice mixed session, I bet it's not nice at that spot today, all blown out here too. Come on spring hurry up I want to go fishing!
Thanks mate. Yeah its really nasty down there at the moment, waves are coming round right over the breakwater and the water is brown! Couldn't agree more mate, roll on spring!
I love the thought of what might be lurking between them boulders, would like to try that next time I fish any venue like that, at the moment I'm confined to my local freezing cold, freshwater filled shallow estuaries & creeks, they seem devoid of fish at the moment, I'm even considering fishing my local commercial carp fishery again!! All the best, great content as usual.
Totally agree mate, I've an unhealthy obsession with fishing around boulders I think! They do tend to hold a fish or 2 even on the slowest of days which is handy! I find estuaries to be the bleakest of places at this time of year, as you say, they seem devoid of life at times. Still, I'd love a bit of that right now being currently confined to the local canal, which is frozen at the moment! Cheers mate, all the best 👍🎣
nice vid mate and cool editing skills, keep it up 🎣
Thanks very much mate, much appreciated, tight lines 🙂🎣
@@DevonLerfer yeah tight lines to you to
Signed up for the Big Lerfin fundraiser 👍🏻
Brilliant mate, great news! Look forward to seeing you there 🙂🎣
@@DevonLerfer yeah something to look forward to in these bleak times, can’t wait. Better start practicing! Great video mate
Yeah exactly mate, really need to something to look forward to at the moment so this will be much needed! Thanks mate, tight lines 👍🎣
Great vid 👍 What size hooks would you recommend for the Carolina Rig when targeting the smaller species, ie Sand Gobys. Thanks.
Thanks mate, I usually go with a size 16 hook for most of my carolina and dropshot fishing when I'm scratching for the smaller species. Small enough to hook all but the smallest species and about right for rigging a short length of medium or large isome 🙂🎣
Fair play for getting out bud, I'm itching for some lerfing fun but being inland kinda restricts the option's while these covid restrictions are here....hopefully be able to get out soon and looking forward to trying a few new spots......
Cheers mate, this was footage from last winter that I'd not got round to uploading. Desperate to get to the coast but it'll be a while yet I fear!
@@DevonLerfer shame that thought you were still managing to get out....keep seeing the pics on plymouth fb page and its making me envious of all those that live by the coast.....
@@cydrosmil yeah same mate!
Great video, not a lot a fish but really enjoyed watching that, loved the cormorant sitting on the rock watching you catch towards the end of the clip.
Quick question. As the bay is super stirred up and dirty water is well past Berryhead, is there any techniques that can work in these conditions?
Thanks mate. Yeah that's typical of late winter sessions for me, fish are few and far between and its often a relief to avoid a blank! I think it would be a struggle in current conditions, if I was to give it a go I'd be fishing really small dropshot or carolina rigs in the holes and nooks and crannies fishing scented lures very slow or static apart from the movement the tide provides. I'd be changing lures often and trying different colours to try and find something that worked. Would be a tough job though I reckon.
@@DevonLerfer Cheers for the advice, will give that a try as soon as the winds swing around and the sea calms down, thanks.
No worries mate, worth a try! One thing I have found when its been really slow has that there has been a little flurry of activity around low tide as the tide starts to push. Can be really short spells but have picked up a few fish during those spells despite having nothing for hours either side.
Was the cormorant waiting to be fed? Good video, thanks for helping pass these long months away.
I think he may well have been 🤣 I often find the. Cormorants do much better than us on those slow days though, popping up with various mini species through the day as if to say "that's how you do it"! Thanks mate, all the best 👍
Thought mackerel where a summer species, they around all year?
Love fishing Brixham, we will be there in August again. What is the net and handle you use please?
Lovely place to fish isn't it 🙂 the net you see me using in the video is a Daiwa iso 5.9m handle and Daiwa Tip n Tilt net, which I sadly lost down a big hole shortly after I filmed this! I now use a 4m spro freestyle handle and net head 👍🎣
@@DevonLerfer Bit of a cheeky ask, when (and if) we get to come down in August, i would very much appreciate it if i could contact you for a bit of tutorial / few hours fishing with you please. We are actually staying right next to the tackle shop. No worries if not, it is a cheeky ask.
@@jasonrenshaw9010 hi mate, I'd be more than happy to come down and show you some spots and stuff if I can 👍🎣
@@DevonLerfer Many thanks, i will be in touch nearer the time, much appreciated.
Awsome 😉😉👍
You fish the carolina rig with a solid tip rod or tubular tip?
Thanks mate. I'd choose solid tip, if I'm fishing carolina it will usually be fishing very slowly for delicate bites, so prefer the reduced resistance of a solid tip 🙂👍
Thanks for the tip 😉😉👍👍
@@pedrocrespomira4693 no problem mate, tight lines! 👍🎣
Cracking rich always hard this time of year but you got a few species out
Thanks mate, yeah wish I could get out and have a go now but will have to be patient! Hope you're well 👍🎣
I know you probably get asked this all the time but what rod is it
I actually use 3 different rods in this video - a Tailwalk Ajist TZ69/SL, a Major Craft Truzer TZS-T762L and a Major Craft KG Lights 👍
@@DevonLerfer ok thanks which is th one you used first
Tailwalk Ajist mate
If I caught it I would have thought the second fish was a pouting can someone pleas explain the difference
Its something you get the hang of and don't really think about after a while but the position of the pelvic fin in relation to the pectoral fin is the main one, body shape and lack of dark mark on pectoral are other indicators of poor cod. Hope that helps 🙂
Also to me, the Poor Cods eye seems bigger in relation to its head, than a Pouts
@@alexp3519 I'd agree with that! 👍
Ok thanks guys
