mr Russell. has the best laugh...he sounds like a man who knows he has nothing to prove to anyone from any era..his eleven rings speak volumes...nuff said..
the contagious cure
it's so great I can hear it now - what a genius.
He passed today. Here to revisit the history of this iconic human being and basketball player. RIP Mr. Russell. Forever in the stars legend
Dam I did't know it...
Ten times the heart, a hundred times the character and three times the number of rings as LeBum.

RIP Russell's Parents.... You've raised a man, a hero, an idol, a champion & the greatest winner of all time!
***** ... Read better. I said, the greatest winner of all time. I didn't say player! Jordan has 6, Russell has 11! And he did it as a player, and player/coach.
+Illinois what made Jordan such a great player?
+YoungGun9934 everything
i agree with you on tat retrospect .
Stop saying RIP when you don't even know the name of someone and you probably don't give a fuck bout'em
Bill Russell seems like the smartest/wisest person you will ever talk to. I love how his memory is still nasty good at his age.
Brandon N its cuz basketball doesn't give you brain damage
Rap Sure yep 😂😂
It's because - as N.Y. Knicks HOFer and former NY Senator Bill Bradley wrote in 2009, "Bill Russell was the smartest player ever to play the game [of basketball]."
He's one of the very few I would be shaking/stuttering around - Peak Legend.
University of San Francisco Dons NCAA Champion
Sounds like his father was one hell of a man! This is one truly humble man, with much, much more to him than just basketball titles. He was and still is great.
***** You're probably a 13 year-old... I'll just stop wasting my time.
+Bad Boy loool
he wore capes and drove lambos and refused autographs for kids. very humble man.
Yeah that quote was phenomenal
"Thank you for leaving me off your Mount Rushmore. I’m glad you did. Basketball is a team game. It’s not for individual honors. I won back-to-back state championships in high school, back-to-back NCAA championships in college, I won an NBA championship my first year in the league, an NBA championship my last year, and nine in between. And that, Mr. James, is etched in stone.”-Bill Russell 2014
Pete he won two, do some research
@@texaspete33 What are you, a moron?
He belongs in Mount Rushmore.
He belongs ABOVE Mount Rushmore
Bird, Johnson, Jordan, and Russell. There's Mount Rushmore.
The biggest reason I watched this was because I was curious to hear from Bill Russell himself how he dealt with racism during his career knowing that he played in the 50's and 60's. I have a greater deal of respect now towards Russell after seeing how he stood up for his fellow African American athletes such as Ali and his fellow African American teammates when they were not served food. It's hard to believe that such a great player was not fully embraced by the fans he played for despite winning so many championships for the city of Boston. Hats off to you Russell!
Racism was more 30s and 40s I think
Nvm I thought you meant rights, not whites shunning them
Sam C Gamer dude, that's a very ignorant statement you made. You didn't know what Russell, Ali, Jackie Robinson and other black athletes had to go through
Renee, it now where near what is was back then. Back then a black person was physically unsafe if he or she went into certain white neighborhoods. Many blacks today don't know what real oppression looks like.
Manny Akintunde Pretty sure black people have been hearing that ever since slavery was abolished. It's a no true Scotsman fallacy, _"Sure, you're segregated, but you've never been someone's property, so you don't know what real oppression looks like."_
This video gave me serious chills, Russell is true class.
Hei C I thought I was the only one
Bill Russell's laugh is infectious...
+TheyCallMe Viz He is funny.
reporter is so lucky getting to be in the presence of Greatness
Rap Sure it's bill Simmons bro you should check out his podcast he's a great sports guy
Bill Simmons is a fucking idiot.
@@Rockcroc2000Rm1wE3erWmNfkL How so, exactly? Please explain.
Sarken I kinda like him
I wish they had a documentary on his story rather than about the 'Last Dance'. Especially for those who think leadership equals bullying. Bill Russell is the GOAT. Period.
I wish too , I just don’t think they can get enough footage
Offense wins games but Defense wins championships
Offense wins championships. That's how the saying goes
+Richy M thats why warriors won o wait...... thats why detroit won in 2004..
MyAssStings If i stop you from scoring then you dont get points or wins game. defense and team works gets you to the promise land
theres no such thing as completely stopping a team from scoring ya dumb fuck, you can only reduce how much they score with defense but theyre still going to score. talking to you is like talking to a 5 yr old
how about when your defense isnt working that well and you need offense to win when your down by 2 points with 5 secs left? hows your defense going to help then?
Bill Russell is criminally underrated by todays basketball “experts”
What a laugh. Remarkable guy.
Bill Russell is the last great mythical athlete from that era. The world should cherish him more while he’s here
He passed the other day 😔
The godfather of basketball!! Love you Mr. Russell
this man is a national treasure. absolute American hero.
Agreed!
Absolute American hero!
Mr. Russell and everyone should address him as Mr. for sure. Not only the greatest player and leader of all time but a 'real man' and prove that character overcomes all. Thank you Mr. Russell.
+Bad Boy Mr Russell Played 13 season won 11 championships. Jordan played 15 seasons to only win 6. Mr Bill Russell greatest nba player of all time.
+moe not even comparable when Bill won his championships there were what 10 - 15 teams in the league.
AAADylan281 That arguments forces you to shoot yourself in the foot. Lesser teams means, less watered down talent.
He’s not the best😂😂when he was in the league there were only 10 to 15 teams in the nba. Now there are 30. So of course it would be easy to get 11 rings.
BIG TREY it’s out of him and Jordan
I'm from Boston but I'm too young to have a firsthand perspective on how the city was in the 50's and 60's. But I know for a fact that today my city has nothing but respect, love and admiration for Mr. "Big" Bill Russell. Thanks for the glamorous moments, big guy. And thanks for being one of the key factors in creating the Celtics legacy. You're truly a Boston legend, and an ideal human being. Cheers.
I remember being around 8 years old asking an older family friend who the best basketball player ever was and his answer was Bill Russell. This was around 90-91 when the Jordan craze was going on and of course being a kid I was all about Jordan. At that time we didn't have ESPN (didn't have cable till middle school, CZcams, or random access to film clips like we do today. Watching basketball there may have been a once in a blue moon clip of Bill Russel and other classics. It wasn't until I was older and got to see these films on demand, like on CZcams for example, that I really appreciated what he did. Not just from a basketball standpoint but what he endured, stood for, and the man he became. He was one of the first to transcend the game. I can't help but to see athletes as humans too and because of that it's hard for me to just make an unbiased assessment of one solely based on their play. Their personalities and attitudes come out in their passions for the game. Bill was a fine example of that. His book goes beyond what any documentary or highlight reel would reveal. I don't care who's better than who here. I'm just giving credit where it's due. I'm so glad we have access to information like we do today so we can see these things. Watch full games and one will really see everything Bill did. He may have scored six points in a particular game, but they won, he once said. That's what mattered. And he said he could have had animosity, bitterness, and resentment for how he was treated, but that would make him just like those who did him wrong. Wisdom! The application of knowledge. Positive vibes everyone!
jpratx you nailed this completely and that's the piont i always try to tell people

Yeah like he said. The difference between him and wilt was not the team. He didn’t have a better team. The difference was that he fed his team but wilt got fed by his team.

What a tremendous documentary this was. Bill is one of the top 10 or top 5 most important sports athletes in history, it's a shame Boston didn't show him the respect he deserved. If you are a fan of Basketball or any type of sports for that matter, this is a must watch. Great job by Bill Simmons as well.
AMEN, Celtic Bird.
you think a man who says he doesn't like most white people and doesn't do autographs for kids and is so bitter, he doesn't even want fans at his retirement ceremony deserves respect? Fuck that, Boston made that bitter old man.
@@notsure6187 I mean, you're right they did make him bitter. You grow up with people giving you shit, it's hard not to hate them back
@@notsure6187 Utter horse manure. IF you listened to Bill Simmons interview, it's clear that it was Bill Russell's FATHER who made Bill become the man he became.
Easily top 5, though it's tough to quantify any exact ranking number when comparing between sports and the olympics. 'Athlete' is a subjective word.
Just read that Mr. Russell finished his work on earth, wanted to hear this interview again. What a great honorable , decent man. Best wishes to his family, and those who loved him.
My favorite sports figure ''ever''. I have been a Celtic fan since 1957. Those days however were better than these days.
Wait, how old are you?
lol
Are you just one of those old farts who can't appreciate the greatness of a Lebron or a Steph Curry the way you can appreciate Bill Russell?
@mihir respect the sir, you disrespectful man.
@@mihir702 Of course I appreciate great players from all eras, however, unlike you, I've seen LeBron, Curry AND Bill Russell play - during their prime years. The NBA is about winning championships. Bill Russell won two high school championships, two NCAA Final Four championships, an Olympic Gold Medal and 11 NBA Championships. He is THE winningest player in the history of TEAM sports. No other basketball player can hold a candle to Bill Russell.
czcams.com/video/lc5wizzVVC8/video.html
I love watching his 60's games. So pure. People will forever bring up his scoring deficiency, ignorant of the fact that he was the lead scorer on his college and olympic teams. Why is it all about points anyway? Don't forget he was voted the MVP in 1962, the same year Wilt averaged 50.4 ppg.
And don't forget the 25rpg.
How fitting of the great 60s Celtics dynasty to end in the 1969 Finals with Sam Jones outscoring Wilt in back to back Games 6 and 7, and the fourth consecutive Game 7 meeting in a row (1962, 1965, 1968, 1969) between the two, Wilt choking at the free throw line once again just like in 1960, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, and 1969, Wilt quitting, the Lakers making a run with him off the floor only to lose by a mere 2 points in spite of Wilt's 9 bricks at the FT line, and his Hall of Fame teammate Jerry West doing everything he can to carry his team to the ring, dropping 43-13-12 in Game 7 and winning Finals MVP, only for Chamberlain to fail him.
In 1968 (3-1 lead) and 1969 (3-2 lead) alone, Wilt was 0-5 vs OLD Bill Russell in closeout games. That's the most "dominant" player in history?
Wilt's scoring NEVER benefited his team during this scoring champ seasons, and when his team needed him to score in the post-scoring title years of his career, he failed to step up - just like when Sam Jones outscored him in all four Game 7 meetings.

when Bill Russell is laughing I can only smile of happiness... great human being but mostly Legendary
Richy M. But a black men are better than white men in everything.
Wtf ☝️
"I thoroughly enjoyed my teammates. And i always say that when i left the Celtics i could not go to heaven, because that would be a step down... I am pure 100% Celtic, i think if you slash my wrist, the blood would be green" ~Bill Russell
too bad the celtics play in Boston though
The best part of this documentary for me, is the early part when he is talking about his father. Something I can really relate to. Wonderful scene.
Who is cutting onions. GOD. I am laker fan yet love this Russell more than the one we currently have. Only Russell I will ever respect.
I loved what his dad told him about retiring: “I gave this company 30 of my best years, now I’m going to give them a few of the bad ones”.
I shed a tear .... Spine chilling...
truly one of the most remarkable human beings to walk the face of the planet. it's an honour to see a documentary filled with actual depth of character from a man who defined greatness.
Every time you see him or Magic talk you cant but just smile and you heart lightens up.
Russell's laugh always makes me smile. :)
Back to back NCAA titles at USF...including 55 wins in a row...Olympic Gold Medal as captain...winning the NBA title in 1957...1959...1960...1961...1962...1963...1964...1965...1966...1968...AND...1969!!!

This documentary is awesome from start to finish, such an humble guy! I wish my generation was so humble, now everything is about flash, big houses, etc., smh! Thank God for my previous generation!
ya cause bill house is so small..haha
Lol I was thinking the same! It was hella small, but you know older ppl just want something manageable
***** He bought it in 1973. Why would you expect him to have a lot of money? Looks like a nice house to me. Besides, who cares if it's a huge house if you don't have a large family.
Idan Solon your comment makes no sense, I was saying he's different from this current generation all they want is big houses and being flashy, what are you talking about?
I'm old school/new school:)
"Listen, son... I gave these people the best 30 years of my life, now Imma given them a few of the bad ones..."
Man people that have been through everything, they always have the most fascinating stories as well as the most intriguing ways to present them. Utmost RESPECT MR. Russell!
The greatest quote I took from this was "I played and I played, I didn't want the validation" it just goes to show that bill knew how good he was, but also humble that he didn't care about all the accolades, he is the G.O.A.T in my opinion
If Bill Russell's laugh can't make you smile then you may in fact have no soul.
11 champions ? Well shit I think basketball players nowadays would be happy with just 1! Haha
Hell, Carmelo is happy with another Olympic medal. Not to knock the olympics, but ..... hey.
1945joshuaruiz You are talking like every player back then have 11 rings.
1945joshuaruiz back then there were 8 or 9 teams in the league
1945joshuaruiz the odds are in your favor when there’s only 8 teams in the league, not discrediting him though
Luca Costa yes but if you took the best players in the nba and had 7 teams then that is what it would be like
As a young man, much too young to full appreciate Russell's game, this interview made me love Bill Russell. RIP Legend! 🙌

In those old interviews Wilt just looks like the coolest man on the planet.
Brian Kelly wilt was a coolio. Those old interviews with bill and wilt always cheer me up
That laugh... bless this man's soul. I'm too late to the whole Bill Russell legacy, but from this day-on I think He Is truly the greatest NBA player to ever step on a hardwood floor. Jordan might have changed the game; by giving it the flash and elevating the competition, hence making the world turn their heads and acknowledge the game of B-ball as a powerhouse event, But he did little to nothing for the African American community, he was on a personal mission and nothing else mattered. On the other hand Bill Russell presented the world and image of a human being that wasn't going to be chastised by the color of his skin, he was a class act and was willing to prove every racist person on those stands wrong... and all thanks to his splendid father figure.
Is that a fair comparison though? I mean, by the time Jordan was ballin' on the court there wasn't really much left to do for the sake of African Americans, right?
Still, big respect to people like Mr. Russell and Oscar Robertson for enduring all of that and their contributions.
***** Jordan was certainly great. But I don't think he changed the game much, & not anywhere near what Russell did.
+Copperhell144 Exactly, it's such a stupid argument, taking something Bill Russell did off the court and say it makes him the greatest on the court? lol If that's supposed to be a logical argument with regards to being the greatest player ever, then you can argue that Jordan is responsible for the worldwide popularity of the NBA today and the influx of international players into the NBA.
jan279 What made Russell the greatest was what he did on the court - hs. state champ, 2-time ncaa champ, olympic gold, & 11 nba titles in 13 years. the off the court stuff was just a bonus & a reflection of his character & concern about larger issues; something Jordan & others who benefited so greatly from their predecessors haven't shown much interest in.

Excellent piece. Bill Simmons' best work. Bill Russell is truly one of a kind.
i truly respect this man to no end for who he was what he's done and what he represented
I thought that part of the interview was very moving as well. Time goes by faster than we think. Those two put a lot of heart and soul into the NBA. The rivalry ran deep, but the friendship was eventually built.
He really has a good laughter. I would laugh when he suddenly bursts into his laughter.
This interview truly gave many of us an in depth perspective on Bill Russell as a player and a coach with an amazing laugh and a trailblazer, who treats everyone with respect! RIP 🙏

First thing you hear of Bill Russell is his laugh.

What an extraordinary human being, the winning 11 titles in 13 years feels like an untouchable feat in any era, but Bill did it during the most turbulent of times with such class and grace where the players had no real benefits, were being financially mistreated and racism was ever present.
