Thanks you have no idea how much this vid helped me. I watched others videos on the matter and knew the ways to solve the bad topology of the text but you made it so simple that it made it click in my head that there are 3 ways to fix bad topology. Thanks. Just want to add that after doing that sometimes you'll need to tweak things manually using: face orientation view, merge by distance and delete edges in case u run into the problem where there are artefacts when solidifying like it happened to me.

Thankyou amazing tutorial game developer here (kinda) never really used blender however Iโm trying to make a memorial bench but Iโve used this to help some of the letters arenโt coming through any ideas on how to fix
Hi, may I request you to describe the issue little more? I want to know whether these letters are not showing up when you are creating the text field, or if they are not intersecting with the plane while using a boolean.
@@5MinutesBlender basically I think I figured it out thereโs a T but when you increase the thickness the backside of it gets connected to the top layer in the middle and it makes the T appear as though thereโs a triangle coming out of it from the side so my guess is because of that when you hide it it doesnโt actually make contact with the block therefore not making an imprint

thank you! the exact option didnt do a thing so i use fast option but it kept messing up the object i was trying to engrave my text into. turns out it was because the object was shaded smooth and had subdivision while text wasnt smooth or anything so it freaked out

Thank you for the vid. Would it simpler to just convert the text to mesh and merge by distance, extrude then limited dissolve 10ยฐ? I didn't know about the normals smooth thing. I was using rings. Thank you again.
It can help ๐ but if you are referring to the bevel issues, sometimes bevels become too difficult to manage, specially with complex fonts. There is no technique that works in all cases of bevel. Sometimes it can also help if we create the text through geometry nodes (discussed here ๐ czcams.com/video/5SRiESHQkmY/video.html )

Only thing annoying in this tutorial is the HARD music. If you reduce the music volume and have soft background music it would be great. Music is not important. Your explanation is important for us to follow. When hard music playing, and directive words it's bit hard to follow.

You need to remove the text before exporting, the text is already engraved on the targetsurface, so remove the original text.

Is it possible to import vector text from Coreldraw and emboss it? Would this also eliminate the extra lines? thanks
Yes, we can do that! We can export something in SVG format from CorelDraw, and import that into Blender. You are not importing a "text" in this method, you're importing a 2D or 3D object, which will be converted into path when you import to Blender. You need to then convert this "path" (a set of paths) into one "object". This process is explained in this tutorial although it is on a different subject ๐ czcams.com/video/12YuQj48sr0/video.html (skip the initial part and watch from 2:40 onward). Once you have the text imported into Blender, the rest of the process will be same as this tutorial to emboss or engrave it on any surface. I hope you'll be able to put these things together. when i tried to take a picture of my model with engraved lettering so I can go and edit in photoshop it turned into embossed lettering pretty. I think it is from when you hide the text. Any work around to this or way to fix it? I love how it came out but want to edit it in photoshop.
From the description of your case, I am making a guess that the text is hidden in the viewport, but it is visible in the render. So, you see the engraved version in the viewport, but when you take the output, you see the text as it is, so it looks like an embossed version. If that is the case, you just need to hide the text also in the render (to do so, you need to enable the filter in the Outliner). Or easier way, instead of hiding the text, simply delete it completely as its purpose is over. Then it won't come in the output at all. And in case this does not fix your issue, you can mail me your blend file and I will be more than happy to look into it & suggest the exact fix. All the best!

awesome video! my only issue is when trying to export is as it's engraved the text still saves as if it's Embosseed. question is how do I engrave it and have it stay that way even when have the "View" for the text enabled?

Hi, you need to "apply" the boolean modifier on your block, then it will become permanent. Apply that boolean modifier and delete the text object. Now you have a single object which you can move, rotate or export along with the engraved or raised text in it.

i noticed that when the text or any object is inside the other object and their faces still intersect, the difference modifier will not work. so thats why we need to make it peak out even just by any infinitesimal amount.

When I apply the decimate modifier to the mesh it is not countig faces at all. Can you help me with that, please?
Do you have the decimate modifier before or after the boolean? When you apply a modifier, please ensure that all previous modifiers are applied beforehand.
Hi! Intead of engraved, my text looks like only the outline of it is engraved. I wanted the whole text engraved, like yours. Is there a solution to that? Thank you.
To suggest you best, we need to look at your blend file. You can email the same to me (contacts given in the About section for this channel). Otherwise I can just guess that probably you have not made enough overlap between the text and the target object. There has to be a good amount of overlap, so that it creates a "cut". Just "touch" is not enough. Whether that was the issue in your case or it is something else, I can comment on that once I can take a look at your blend file. All the best!
It worked for me after I stopped trying to apply the engraving from the underside and applied it from the top side by mirror flipping my object
So I've tried this with a shape I created using a curve but it only carves out some of the features instead of the entire shape. I'm also using an STL shape to carve into. Please Help if you can ^_^

@@5MinutesBlender I just figured it out, the STL was Hollow, so it wasn't reading the faces as solid objects to cut into, I tried it with a solid STL and it worked perfectly. Thank you for the great tutorial video!

I'll suggest you two things. First, we have discussed some common beveling issues and their solutions in this video ๐ czcams.com/video/VdlcAD6FRpo/video.html You can check that. But it may need you to do a lot of editing to the text mesh. Since we are dealing with a text, my second suggestion is, add sufficient bevel to the text object before you convert it to a mesh. In the text settings, you have a bevel option and it works far better than a mesh. So add enough bevel to the text itself, then convert it to mesh and do the engraving part. Later, you can use a small bevel amount while doing the final bevel on the combined object. Thus the text will have a bigger bevel and the text to mesh junction will have a smaller bevel. I believe it will look good. All the best!

@@5MinutesBlender I looked at a bunch of different methods to create decoration effects on CZcams. I'll have to experiment and see which way works best. I'm creating some leafy decorative patterns on a battle axe blade.
Is there a way I can rotate my object and the engraving with it?
Yes, of course. The engraving is a permanent modification to the target object, which stays with the object. Not only you can rotate it, but you can also move it, scale up or scale down, or do anything like a normal object, the engraving will go with the object. In case this is not happening in your case, please check if all the modifiers are "applied", and then remove or hide the text (the source object for engraving). If still not resolved, I need to look at your specific blend file, to figure out what is going wrong. Thanks for watching the tutorial.

does this convert to a stl file for 3d printing?
Yes, very much! You need to apply all the modifiers and delete the extra objects (like the text fields) before export. Otherwise Blender will export everything even if they are hidden. This will result into an incorrect output when you 3d print. Clean everything, keep only the target object and then export, it will work.
When i do this everything works as said, Only thing that the letter T gets a spike standing out from it and it does not get engraved like the other letters. Help please
It happens sometimes when you are working with a boolean modifier along with bevel. These are known as artifacts, and there is no sure-shot way to remove them, although you can try few things and it can be removed in most of the cases. Please watch the next tutorials in this series where we have discussed this. You need to use a knife tool (in the edit mode) to cut through the affected region, in order to add an aditional edge line. You can also use the merge by distance option, reduce the bevel amount or in very complex cases, manually add or delete some vertices to get a smoother geometry. That should resolve it.
I had a similar issue. You need to fix the topology of your letter and it should work.
in last version of blender text option is not present ... i am new need help try version lts 3 or 2

when i save the file a and open in in cura it has nomal 3d text how do i fix?
In the tutorial, we have only hidden the original text. It needs to be deleted or removed. Do that only when everything is final because you cannot edit the text after you delete it. Please render the output and verify that it looks correct. Then you can go for export.
But how about all topology... What happen to that mesh if we put the Sub D
Better to add subdivisions before you perform or apply the boolean modifier. Ideally it should be the last step.

exporting this to STL on my prusa slicer I cant get rid of the embossed text sticking out of my object. Im trying to engrave.
Hi there! My quick guess is, you are probably getting the embossed object along with the original text over it, so the text is sticking out of the object. You have to simply remove the original text. Just delete it after applying all the modifiers, hiding it in the viewport is not enough. Hope that resolves the issue. Please let me know if otherwise.

ok boom, but i done the cube and wrote something and i want to remove it , is it possible w/o destroying the whole damn cube? :)
Yes, you can apply the boolean modifier on the cube, it will make the engraved/ embossed or raised part permanent. You can then remove your original text, the effect will still last. Please let me know if this does not solve your requirement.
i managed to fix it by using delete vertices on edit + xray and wireframe with box select , im too new to this "bender" so i got no idea how to use boolean , will try this today , cheers mate.

When i export that engraved text gets filled up again and stands up from the surface. So Blender exports the not visible objects to my stl file... How can i export without these non visible objects

Every time i export it as an stl file the text isn't engraved, I've checked the comments section but I cant see any with this issue could you help please. Great tutorial though
It should work. I tested this. First you have to apply all the modifiers. Then delete the text objects altogether leaving only the primary cube with the text engraved. Now export it in stl format. I verified that by opening the stl file in Window's default 3D Viewer. It looks as expected.

Yes, of course. Add a text field, go to the edit mode, and use control-V. Whatever text you had earlier copied, will be pasted. But if you have any special character, you need to use some special font, otherwise it won't display correctly. This part has been explained in this tutorial ๐ czcams.com/video/MGgsiyhnJSQ/video.html

Hi, the boolean modifier would work if there is an overlap between the text object and the target surface (the cube in this case). You will need to move the text object slightly inside the surface, to create an overlap. If it still does not work, I'd request you to send your blend file to us, I will check what is going wrong. Geometry - Extrude and set it say 0.2
Much easier, but boolean for engraving is a very good idea, not just with fonts but say - if you want to make a shaped size hole etc

Hello I exported the file with engraved text from blender to STL, I did exactly all the steps you said then when I opened the STL file the text appeared as an embossed text and not engrave. Appreciate your answer regarding the problem.

You have to simply remove the original text. Just hiding it may not be enough, because it hides the text in the viewport, but still it remains there and appears in any output. Please disable it in the render output, or you can simply delete it as well, after applying all the modifiers. Do it only when everything is final, because once deleted, you cannot change the text or the effects. trying to follow. using a script type font where the letters touch. blender is not doing a great job at merging the geometry.
