- Make your own homemade red Twizzlers! These tasted remarkably like the store bought candy, but had a completely different texture.
Candy making playlist: • Homemade Candy Recipes
1/3 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
Pinch of salt (I didn't add any as I used salted butter in mine)
1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp all purpose flour
Cherry flavoured candy oil (I used 10-15 drops)
1 tsp red food colouring (liquid) or a few drops of paste food colour.
Butter a 9 inch square baking pan (I used and 8x8" and it was fine)
Line with parchment paper, allowing pieces to hang over the edges of the pan. Grease the parchment.
Combine the butter, sugar, syrup, sweetened condensed milk and salt (if using) in a medium sized saucepan over medium heat.
Cook until the butter has melted and sugar is dissolved.
Continue to cook until the mixture reaches 250 to 255F. Reduce the heat to medium low if you find the bottom burning.
You have to stir this pretty much continuously.
The colour will darken as the mixture caramelizes, but I think this is normal.
Once you reach the proper temperature, remove it from the heat and stir in the flour, colour and flavouring oil.
Pour into prepared pan and allow to cool for about 30 minutes. Allow to cool until you can handle it without burning your hands and so that it is fairly set. Set enough so that when you cut it with a knife it stays in a rope shape.
Slice into 1/4" slices and twist. Cut into desired lengths.
***to make black licorice follow the same instructions, but reduce the corn syrup to 1/3 cup and add 2 tbsp of molasses. Use anise oil instead of cherry and add black food colouring instead of red.
BE SURE TO PUT YOUR POT/SPOONS IN A SINK FULL OF HOT WATER and the candy will just melt off after a bit.
This recipe found in the LCBO magazine called "FOOD & DRINK HOLIDAY 2014"
Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

I LOVE comments and I read each and every one of them.
I try very hard to answer questions when I can, but there is an excellent chance your question has been answered in the description box or in the comments, so please take a look.
My favourite channel here on CZcams is CookingAndCrafting. Beth lives in Hawaii and makes great meals, desserts and crafts. We met here on CZcams by commenting on each others videos and have since met each other several times in "real life". She is a lovely person and a great friend. Please check her out :)

I like how she got right into the video .
+Elizabeth Locust Thanks! I can't stand waiting for 1-2 minutes for someone to actually start with a recipe :)
ikr. no BS
mannnnnn your so right 💪
Yasss i was just about to skip ten but she just began
This was my favorite childhood CZcams channel. I used to make all of the recipes with my grandmother. So glad I’ve re-discovered it years later.
I'm eating a Twizzler and watching this. Next batch will be done this way. Great video presentation. Short and to the point.
Same am also eating a twizzler
Woah! That was cool. I bet they taste so much better than store bought!
Pretty sure she said they taste exactly the same, which means no better, no worse.
They look really pretty and kind of christmassy. I bet if you made some green ones, they'd make a nice gift in a little bag tied up with a ribbon. (:
:) I was thinking the same thing :)
Holly Silvester Even better!
Will have to see if I can find candy apple or sour apple for the green colored ones??
Sour apple would go great with the cherry!
Good ole lime for the green. I remember when green candies where lime, everything has changed to green apple. I miss like flavored candies
My 8 month old will actually sit still during your videos. He's fascinated!
I think this youtuber's comments are the most possitive. Good job people!
+Gaming WMy I don't allow nasty comments on my channel and delete them promptly. I find that it actually helps keep new ugly/nasty comments from being posted. I think people are less likely to be negative if they see positive comments posted. Thank you for your positive comment, it is appreciated.
yoyomax12 - the diet free zone You welcome.
Thanks! Best video so far on licorice making.
We love licorice so much that we took on a 5 POUND licorice challenge!!! Love this candy!!!😊😊😊
I can't wait to try this with my kids. They would love it.
I love those and now I can make my own! Yay!
Wow that's so cool and looks SOOO delicious. I love licorice and am eager to try this. Thanks very much for the video.
Thx so much for sharing!!! Licorice Is my favorite candy!
Those look amazing!!
It is dissapointing to learn that red licorice is basically sugar and butter >_> I thought it involved the licorice root far more.
you're not the only one.
an old comment, i know, but red licorice isnt really licorice! black licorice is made the root though.
You obviously have never had licorice. It's like how disappointing, I thought there was more Beef in a veggie burger.
Only black licorice is made with licorice root.
I love licorice.... Especially cherry. Going to try this!
Diana DeLaFuente did u ever try it?
love how u got right into jt
*it
You are my hero .. I love red twizzlers.. Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you.
Thank you for posting this recipe! We are a GF family and 'twizzlers' are a no-no for us. I'm gonna give this a shot with GF flour. I'm excited to see how they turn out. :-)
thanks for the reciepe i needed it for my essay of the week
Looks delicious!
ooh kinda like those red skins candy
Mine did taste like taffy texture, but it had a bit of a caramel taste. I rolled mine in sugar as they were drying. Next time I'll do Apple flavour and sprinkle citric acid and sugar on it! Sour caramel apple. Flavour, and make red and green
I will be trying this soon thanks
This was fun!! Thank You!!
I just asked my 5yr old what Christmas treat she wanted to make yesterday. she said licorice and I told her I could make that looks like now I can. thanks for the ideas!!
*Love it*
It's so funny you mentioned that about the fillings, because I actually tore one of mines out eating a Taffy! lol.
They look delicious, I want to try with kool aid. Great video!
Great video
BRILLIANT
I need to try making this, would be fun doing this with my grandkids :)
great job!
Me and my brother Jayston are HUGE fans of yours. He said "It would be sooooo cool if YoYoMax said hi to us!"
So clever!
Awesome vid, i made it and its amazing
Very interesting !
Thanks for the recipe, just tried it. Mine turned out not too bad, but a little more like hard toffee than the rubber texture I was aiming for. Any idea what I did wrong or what can I change?
Gonna try this recipe when i get home..gonna do strawberry flavor tho. Good video!
Finally I know how to make in my countries are these expensive
maybe try tapioca starch instead of the flour?
have no idea if it would work but i know tapioca starch gives a rubbery texture.
your licorice would spread better if you greased your spoon first. I've found when working with candy that a little grease on your spoon works out well as long as you don't over do it.
I love twizzlers they are the best sweets ever
Cool! My sister loves Licorice I may try these for her. Would the commercial made ones have gelatin in them to give the rubbery texture I wonder?
your great !!!!
i love licorice
When you make the licorice is it sticky when you touch it? Also GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Not sure if anyone has said this but would gelatine help? Not sure 😞 would like to make these for christmas. Love your videos ☺
Those where the bomb back in the day
Do you have a wonder cup (measuring cup)? It's perfect to measuring stuff like peanut butter and corn syrup because it scrapes down the side swhen you pour it into your recipe!
Sweet!!!!!!
I had no idea that is what was in my favorite candy
just discovered it and subbed :))
Hi Tammy! How long does the mixture boil until it's ready? I don't have a thermometer... and I use the dark syrup so it's hard to guide from the colour of caramelization! I tried to cook it less but it ended up too sticky :(
Thanks
This was very interesting.
This must be delicious !! :-P
Class!
You should do shutouts!
Could the manufacture be adding gum paste to get that rubbery feel?
I love your Videos :D I always wanted to know how to make these at home .Thx :)
Have you ever made black licorice? I've always been impartial to it!
Me encantan estos dulces..ya me suscribí a tu canal. 😄
Hi tammy, i saw your comment on anne's channel and i hated it when some people have the nerve to say rude things. I love the both of you, esp. you, always loved your video ever since. Continue your good job and thank you for sharing a lot of cool things to us. We may not be a million but we love and support you more than numbers ! Love from the philippines ! :*
Most of the hatred is fueled by jealousy and it is very easy to ignore it. Anne is amazing, her videos are so very well made and I've always admired her :) Thank you for your very kind support. I appreciate it.
This looks awesome! Would you be so kind as to post the ingredients and directions please?
I loved red licorice when I was in Canada for a while but now I can't get my hands on any. So I will try this out for sure!
I’m in Serbia and can’t get any too
can you use food paste coloring from Wilton? I already have those
Do you think a-gum may have been added to the commercialised ones?
Im new to your channel I just wanted to say you are so creative..
the other thing with licorice is that it is a hollow tube - maybe that would change something too? as always, you amaze :)
yummy
your so clever
Excellent Job,Very professional.Keep it up.Would like to learn how to make the Red Licorice pipes and toy guns.I don't believe they are sold anymore-Great Luck.Enjoy Christmas
Is the food coloring chemical free or can you substitute it with beet juice
Is there a way to do this with low carb/keto?
how many minutes should i leave the mixture boiling i can't find candy thermo at my area??????
what will happen if you do not get to the required temperature?
These kind of remind me of an Australian candy called redskins, they're kind of like a raspberry taffy but much firmer
I am eating 🍊 orange cream filled 😋 twizzlers from walmart what🤔🧐 is up with flour ???????
what can i use instead of condensed milk, non dairy
maybe using some jello mix? maybe that will make them more jelly like?
Mine ended up with the consisty of marsipan. What did I do wrong?
I'm allergic to Cherry can I use strawberry
Can you use syrup for flavour?
I put mine in the friste over night after cutting them, and they are still soft. Anyone have an idea of what I did wrong?
Can you list the ingridient in grams and °C too?
What can i use instead of condensed milk?
I think I would prefer these to the rubber-like licorice. I love licorice, the flavored ones, so I may give this a try if I can find the flavoring. Did you get it at The Bulk Barn or somewhere else? They look so delicious!!
I bought the oil at Hobby Lobby in the USA, but I have seen it locally at Michael's
yoyomax12 - the diet free zone Thanks Tammy! I will go to Michael's!
I followed your recipe and they came out great, but I would like them to be softer, like licorice. What can I do...add water, glatine?? Thanks
I have not tried this but I bet if you backed down 2-4 degrees it would be softer...
my mommy ever eat that. this is from holand. its tasty.
Can you make gluten free licorce?
Can you melt licorice?
I wonder if you cooked the sugar to 245 and instead of letting it set, you moved it with a spatula like you do taffy and pulled it, if it would be a little less hard. Also, how do twizzlers get the hole in the center?
I think that the commercial twizzlers are extruded through a mold that makes the hole in the center
I find the concept of fruit flavoured liquorice so strange! I'm from denmark and we are kinda known for black liquorice which is saltly and well.. Like black liquorice! I hate it but that's beside the point ;-) So strange seeing "liquorice" being other things too!
Me too, I thought the exact same thing. :)
Even our black licorice is very sweet not salty. The fruit flavored licorice is not licorice at all but a fruit flavor added to the same base as licorice, probably because most people don't like black licorice flavor.
Jeg er
Ej hvor sjovt at finde en fra Dk! Det er lidt underligt at tænke på at lakrids kan have frugt smag ja, men jeg elsker virkelig salt lakrids..
Det er temmelig sært..
3rd comment! Yay! Tammy your such a good baker. When I try to bake something i ruin it😭
wow..
Where did you get carry grover corloring
When you say Licorice it mean there is a licorice ingredients. It seems that candy it just a pure flour and butter, corn syrup? No licorice added? Even powder licorice?
Although it said licorice, it is pretty rare that even licorice flavored things have licorice root and instead will use anise extract. She is making cherry licorice like twizzlers which is a bit of a misnomer as they do not have actual licorice.
i wonder if this could be made with real cherries and stuff?
Woah
What if u replaced the flour with corn starch??? Isn't that enough to make it softer???
I doubt it. It think that there must be some kind of additive in the commercially made ones that make them soft and chewy
Couldnt u use snowcone cherry flavor
